Nature of programnnStarted 1996Part-time evening, you take what you need and have pre-reqs for nSIE courses are UMD science courses nBut, we serve students with a wide range of career goals.Course staffing nSame courses as taken by undergraduate UMD prehealth studentsSIE is NOT accelerated- the full curriculum for medical or dental school takes fiveacademic semesters plus one summerSections reserved for SIE students– smallCarries reputation of UMCP undergrad courses and curriculum- UMD transcriptMost students in SIE are interested in health professions, so we offer coursesrelated to these interests nCourses and program follow UMD curricula, rules, schedulesStudents are UMD part-time, non-degree seekingFaculty are UMD instructors & adjuncts.TA’s are usually undergraduate degree seeking science majorsCost in-state per credit tuition rate plus pro-rated fees

Admission to SIE, provisionalnA Bachelor’s degree from accredited university, official transcript requiredGPA 2.5Non-degree seeking statusnInternational students. difficultnn SIE will accept foreign credits as pre-requisitesMany professional programs do not accept foreign credits as pre-reqsMany professional schools do not accept non-citizens / non residents atall

Admission to SIE, final mathnScience courses at UMD require a high degree of mathproficiency – ready to take calculus nArithmeticExponentslogsgraphsAlgebratrigBy UMD policy Math preparation is measured by the mathplacement exam MPE is taken after conditional acceptance to SIE

SIE coursesnAll courses in the evening– four nights a week– nnnyou can take two courses a semesterundergrad Biology, Chem / Biochem, Physics courses Recommended courses maximize MCAT and DAT performance andcompetitiveness for admissionBasic courses offered every semester Bio1, general micro, Cell biology gen chem 1 & 2, orgo 1 & 2, biochem, phys 1 & 2Other courses offered once a year Bio2, Genetics, Physiology, immunology, special topics Some course we DON’T offernnEnglish, math, soc scienceAll course pre-reqs must be met before registration

nTypical schedulePart time, cannot do SIE full time Even if you could do full time it would not shorten time to complete the full course sequence given the pre-requisitesnTwo courses a semesternCHEM course MW BSCI course TuTh PHYS often taken in summerFor medical and dental nOptimal preparation to take tests and apply --3 years of course workMCAT and DAT are critical and cannot be rushedScience in the EveningTypical program of study Science in the EveningPlan of Study: Medical SchoolMedical School Recommended Plan of Study and Advice on MCAT PreparationOn SIE website for medical and dentalNote: All pre-requisites must be satisfied. A course cannot be taken in the same semester as it’s prerequisite. What classes should you startwith?nFirst semester if you have NO undergraduate sciencecourses- for almost all career paths nBSCI70/171CHEM131/132If you have already taken science courses Start in a place to ensure successIf you have C’s in past courses, should retake beforemoving on to the next course. We do NOT recommend taking a course if you had the prereq more than 3 years ago. Retake the pre-req.n We will enforce this for chemistry coursesIf you are uncertain about where to start make an apt totalk with Dr. Presson

Day, summer, winter available toSIE studies with restrictionsnSIE students must register for at least one SIE course in each semester at UMDto remain in program nDay courses n open registration to all students, but few courses in the eveningPHYS1, 2 offered in summer in evening are are manageableFew biology courses in summer, and all meet during the dayI do NOT recommend chemistry in summerWinter nSIE students can register first day of classesSummer nYou can take semesters fully off, but if you are registered at UMD you must have at least 1SIE course to remain in the programusually misc upper level biology & online geneticsDay, summer, winter do NOT carry in state tuition for out of state students

Is SIE right for you?

SIE is ideal for students who:nnnnAre career changers and need all of the course prerequisites for their graduate or professional schoolprogramhave taken some courses but not all of them and needa flexible program to take just the courses they needhave completed most lower level pre-requisite coursesand wish to take upper level biology courseswork while taking courses No more than 40 hrs / week No travel, taking work home etc

SIE is not as useful for studentswho:nHave taken many science courses and are looking toincrease their GPA by repeating courses. Thesestudents can enroll in SIE but . A GPA based on 120 or so undergrad credits is hard toraiseSIE students typically do better in SIE then they did asundergrads, but often not good enoughProfessional schools sometimes not impressed byrepeated courses

How successful will you be in SIE courses?nnnnnIt depends on youSIE sciences courses are hard, have high expectationsOnly about 15 - 20% of SIE students apply to med / dent each year thru UMD. These tend to have highGPAs & test scoreThose that don’t apply are taking only one course or two in SIE Or did not get the grades they hopedforAbout 60 – 70% of those that apply are accepted each yearUG vs SIE GPA 742 students since 2010. Red took new MCAT, applied, accepted. Blacktook new MCAT rejected. 75% of students premed. Rules, regulationsnnnnRuns by same rules as all UMD programsThings like repeats, drops, adds, withdrawals alldictated by UMD rulesExceptions to policy petitioned by same rules thatgovern all UMD studentsCourses same as those taken by degree seekingstudents, same rules, same content

expectations of studentsnnCourses are UMCP CMNS undergraduate coursesExpect to be treated like you are 19 nFollow the rulesPay attention to the expectationsRespect your instructors and TAsBe mindful of academic integrityThe best predictor of success is class attendance Don’t miss classDon’t come lateDon’t expect special treatment “because I work”n med schools will not honor and respect our courses if we make exceptionsto the standard undergrad standards rules

More expectations. gradingnGrading is determined by faculty, just like it waswhen you were an undergrad nDon’t expect a better grade than you earned because“you worked so hard”or because your grade will keep you out of med school.Or.Don’t expect me to override faculty grading. I cannot dothat in our day program and cannot do it in SIE.SIE courses are challenging, difficult But you can be successful

Academic honestynnnnnnDO NOT CHEATAll work handed in for credit must be done by thestudentNot copied from any other sourceIn students own words, paraphrased, not quotedReferenced when appropriateAll cases of suspected academic dishonesty willbe handled by the UM Student Judicial ReviewOffice

Money issues & rules tuition, dates, etc oes.umd.edunnnnSIE courses carry in state tuition Part-time per credit charge at UM MD in-state rate Out of state applies for summer, daytime, winterNo financial aid Terp payment plan: http://www.umd.edu/bursar/TPP.htmlSIE Program follows all UM Undergraduate policies Testudo.umd.edu E.g. drop add period, Drop with a W date, repeat policy Exceptions to policy request go thru the CMNS Students ServicesOffice in 1300 Symons Hall.SIE has special rules for paying tuition. Some medical schools accept scores from both the new and old exams. Accordingly, applicants vary in which scores theyinclude with their applications.
