ForewordSince its beginning in 1978, NISOD has sought to serve, engage, and inspire higher education faculty,administrators, and staff. Our conference, resources, and publications strive to reinforce the importance ofteaching and leading and to celebrate instructors, staff, and administrators who make good on the promiseof the open door.In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted itsfirst ceremony, held in conjunction with our annual International Conference on Teaching and LeadershipExcellence, honoring and naming the individuals featured in this study as recipients of the NISODExcellence Award. The response to that ceremony was so positive that we began what has become anannual celebratory tradition.Early each academic year, we ask NISOD presidents to submit the names of individuals their collegeswish to recognize for excellence. Selection criteria are left to the discretion of each institution. Allindividuals whose names are submitted are recognized as NISOD Excellence Awards recipients. A specialceremony is held during the annual NISOD Conference. All recipients are featured in the awards bookletand presented with a medallion that has been specially cast in their honor.We are indebted to NISOD member colleges for their continuing support of this annual celebration.
