Shehas served on numerous committees, mostrecently as Chair of the Silent AuctionCommittee. In her letter of interest, Deanne explainedher platform:Building Leadership Through ServantLeadership. "This kind of leadershiprequires increasing the awareness of ourindividual and organizational hearts and better understanding our blessings, our limitations, our possibilities and our challenges. Allgreat leaders have a specific leadershippoint of view that defines how they see theirrelationship to those they seek to influenceor lead. Servant Leadership allows us to create a world where people can belong in acommunity. It allows us to be not just todo," Deanne stated. She continued, "Servant leaders come fromanywhere. It is not based upon title, education, prestige, or affluence. It is not our position that gives us power - it is our willingnessto serve. It is not the role we have but howwe treat others - out of relationships of trustand caring."Deanne has the full support of her executive,David B. We contemplate and anxiously await the sounds ofbirds chirping, the sweet smell of blooming flowers, warm weather, trips to the beach and finally our grass turning green again.HCEA members this spring are looking forward to those and manyother adventures with the onset of spring.let me list a couple:Administrative Professionals day is April 26th and HCEA has anew venture to help us celebrate. Joyce Eierman1998 - Paula Overfelt1997 - Pamela M. Mayers1996 - Margie Tarr-SmithQuestions or comments about thisnewsletter, please contact the HCEAoffices. This year has been one of AHA leadership transition for HCEA.We announced in October, a new interim Executive Director,Virginia Sylvestri. I am pleased to tell you that Virginia is the permanent director of HCEA. You will have the privilege of meetingVirginia and her staff at the conference. In closing, let me remind each of you the importance of decidingwhat you want and as you ponder your goals and dreams. HenryJ. Kaiser summarized his philosophy of success this way: "Decidewhat you want most of all out of life; then write down your goalsand plan to reach them." That seems simple enough. Yetmany people are like the elderly woman standing on a streetcorner, scared to cross because there was no traffic signal to control the flow of vehicles. A man joined her on the corner and askedif he could walk across with her. "Oh, yes," she replied, grabbinghis strong arm for direction and support. They proceededacross the street in a haphazard fashion. Cars were honking, people screaming, and the screech of tires filled their ears. Finallyreaching the other side, the lady exclaimed in anger, "You almostgot us killed. You walk as if you can't see the nose on your face.""I can't," the man replied. "I'm blind. That's why I asked if I couldwalk with you." People without goals are blindly pursuing life. They have no clear direction except to dodge life's obstacles. You are an HCEA member; therefore, you have begunthe process of setting goals to enhance yourcareer and personal development. I amhonored to be in association with suchexemplary goal-setters.Warmest regards,Annette Allen2006 Council ChairFor advertising information, pleasecontact Alyse Kittner atakittner@aha.org or (312) 422-3702Published quarterly by the HealthCare Executive Assistants of theAmerican Hospital Association.HCEA O n e N o r t h F r a n k l i n C h i c a g o , I L 6 0 6 0 6 ( 3 1 2 ) 4 2 2 - 3 8 5 1 w w w. h c e a o n l i n e . o r g

It was from anHCEA Advisory Council member whoinquired whether I would be interestedin serving as a member of the 2005/2006 Council. On the one hand I was,of course, flattered to even be considered. On the other hand, I was cautious at best and, as I remember it,quite inquisitive regarding what wouldbe expected of me and what, if any, talents I could contribute to thisesteemed group of health care professionals. Scary thoughts to say theleast. After much consideration andassurance I would not be alone andwould be well oriented, I decided toput my "feet to the fire." I was toquickly learn there was never to be a"fire" and this group of amazingwomen would not allow anyone to falter. My association with HCEA beganwhen I attended my very first annualconference in 2003 in St. Pete'sBeach. I had only been in health carethree and one-half short years and asanyone who has attended a conference without knowing a soul canattest, you never know what to expect. Will there be other novice members inattendance or existing "cliques" thatare well known to each other havingattended together in the past?Fortunately, HCEA ensures new conference attendees are never left aloneand are partnered with an experienced member. My "buddy" wasinstrumental in bringing me into thefold not only by introducing me to fellow members, all of whom wereextremely gracious, but especially bybeing her warm, funny and invitingself, a trait I would soon learn is areflection of this group as a whole.By the end of the conference, I trulyfelt like a part of the HCEA "family"and it was a simple choice to specifymy wish to participate as a member ofthe Planning Committee for the 2004Annual Conference. As I quicklylearned while sitting around the conference table with the other PlanningCommittee members at AHA headquarters in Chicago in the fall of2003, all committee members, bothseasoned and novice, were welcomedto contribute any new and innovativeideas as well as their own personalexperiences. It was quite rewarding tosee the "fruits" of the committee'slabor culminate with the 2004 AnnualConference held in Reno, Nevada. And it’s gotten even better from thatpoint.Continued on bottomof page 10HCEA O n e N o r t h F r a n k l i n C h i c a g o , I L 6 0 6 0 6 ( 3 1 2 ) 4 2 2 - 3 8 5 1 w w w. h c e a o n l i n e . o r g

I attendedmy first conference last year (2005) inChicago and was overwhelmed by theprofessionalism, organization andfriendliness from everyone. I havebeen to many professional meetingsand conferences in my career, butthis one had everything I had beenlooking for. It was such a comfort tobe able to talk with peers, listen totheir helpful suggestions and shareideas I found successful. The speakers and the presentations were topnotch and very motivational.I have enjoyed a long career in mysecretarial role. Starting as a young3rd grader, I remember dreaming ofbecoming a secretary and would playfor hours at my little desk pushingpapers around and pretending to typeand answer phones. In high school Itook all the business classes and incollege, University of Colorado, Iswitched to Sociology. It sure didn'thave much to do with clerical work, but it has helped me better understand people and behaviors.I was a Firm Administrator for a CPAfirm for sixteen years before I startedworking seven years ago as theAssistant to the President at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital inAlexandria, Louisiana. At one time, Ihad been an Area Manager for a multilocation retail business as well as having my own direct sales business. However, I find that the healthcareindustry is growing in such diverseareas with new technologicaladvances that the excitement andchallenges really keeps me on mytoes.I am very proud to be a part of anindustry that works so hard for somany people.
