Doerflinger, Chris KleinThe Marietta College Master of Arts in Psychology Program (M.A.P.) offers an academic curriculum in generalpsychology, as well as offering students the opportunity to conduct research in the areas of: physiological, clinical, cognitive, social, industrial/organizational or developmental psychology. The primary goal of the program is toprovide students with a strong graduate level foundation in general psychology. The program is designed to preparestudents to pursue further education in psychology at the Ph.D. level or to seek employment at the master’s level ina related field.The Master of Arts in Psychology is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and approved by the OhioBoard of Regents.Graduation Requirementsa thesis committee which will consist of two-full timefaculty members of the Department of Psychology (onechair, one member) and if the student desires one outside member selected by the student and approved bythe Director of the MAP program. The outside membermay be a faculty member from another discipline or adoctoral level psychologist from the community.The graduation requirements for the M.A.P. Programare:1. The Credit Requirement2. Each student must earn a grade pointaverage of 3.0 or better.A student enrolled in the graduate program inPsychology who receives a grade of “C” or below in anycore graduate course must repeat the course and receivea grade of “B” or better. The Credit RequirementEach student must complete at least thirty-six (36) credithours of M.A.P. courses as shown below.1.a. The Degree of Master of Arts in Psychologyto have completed the following courses: IntroductoryPsychology, Statistics, and Research Methods. Minimalqualifications for acceptance into the graduate programare an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and a GPAof 3.0 in psychology and official test scores from theGeneral Test of the Graduate Record Examination(GRE). Some exceptions to these requirements may beconsidered; contact the M.A.P. program director formore information. Usually, students will be accepted inthe Spring for Fall admission.1.2.3.Five-year B.A./M.A. ProgramThe M.A.P. program is designed for completion overtwo academic years. Additionally, a five-year combinedBachelor/Master of Arts (B.A./M.A. Program) degree isoffered. The B.A./M.A. option is open only to undergraduate students enrolled at Marietta College. Studentschoosing this option will have the opportunity to complete both a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degreeat Marietta College in five years. Accepted studentshave the opportunity to take graduate level courses during their senior undergraduate year and complete thegraduate requirements during a 5th year in residence.Undergraduate psychology majors/minors at MariettaCollege who apply for the five-year combined B.A./M.A.program will normally be evaluated for acceptance intothe program following the completion of the first semester of the junior year. Students accepted to the B.A./M.A.program are expected to handle the additional burdenand responsibility of handling both their undergraduateand graduate course loads.Acceptance into the five-year B.A./M.A. programdoes not excuse students from completing their undergraduate general education requirements, nor the requirements for the major/minor. Normally a student receiving a grade of “C”or below in any graduate course is considered to be onacademic probation. Students who receive a grade of “C”or below in any core requirement course must repeat thecore course and receive a grade of “B” or better. A student who receives two or more grades of “C” or below inany graduate M.A.P. program course may be dismissedfrom the program.Expectations, Extensions and DismissalsClasses are scheduled for day-time, and/or evenings.Graduate students are expected to attend all classes andlabs as well as psychology department colloquia, and special events. Students are also expected to attend and presenttheir work at regional and national psychology conferencesand serve as role models to undergraduate students.Students are expected to complete all M.A.P. program requirements within two academic years. However,if individual circumstances warrant it a student maypetition the M.A.P. director and their thesis chair for anadditional academic year extension to complete the program.
