A Message From the SuperintendentIn reviewing this edition of the "Excellence in Our Schools" newsletter I couldn't help but reflect on the careers of our departing retirees who are featured on the cover. Together, they represent hundreds of years of experience and thousands of students have been positively influenced by their teachingand service to our schools and community. These veteran educators have left us with a legacy of excellence.As we say good bye to our retirees, we welcome a new group of professionals, many of whom will spend the next thirty to forty years of their lives adding to our reputation as one of the premier school districts of Morris County. I know you will join me in welcoming and supporting the newest membersof our school community. This group of new hires joins our outstanding faculty and staff as we continue with our vision of being "A Community ThatInspires Excellence."Thank you for your ongoing support of the Hanover Township Public Schools.Scott R. Students and parents were encouragedto walk or ride their bike to school today, as part of a communitywide event, supported by the Hanover Township Police Department and the Township's Traffic Safety Committee. We had beautiful weather and a fantastic turn-out! :)3. Mountview Road School’s second annual summer reading partywas held July 24, 2014 on the MTV playground. Students andfamilies gathered to read and relax together with great books!4. Mountview Road School’s annual Spelling Bee was held on June4, 2014 and the top 5 spellers were super excited to be headed toMJS to compete in the district wide Spelling Bee on June 16,2014.5. The new teachers attended a New Teacher Orientation at Memorial Junior School on August 20, 2014.Mr. Rudy Simekwas chosen asBee MeadowSchool’s 20132014 Teacherof the Year. Hewas notified ofhis selectionduring one ofhis classes byMr. Scott R.Pepper, Superintendent ofSchools, andMr. Darrin Stark,Principal of BeeMeadowSchool.Ms. Stephanie Markey, Language Arts/Literacy Teacher, was selected as Memorial JuniorSchool’s 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year. She is pictured above with her students.Mrs. Michelle Marks was chosen as Mountview Road School’s 2013-2014 Teacher of theYear. Meet Our Excellent New StaffMrs. TheaSpina is the Interim AssistantPrincipal at Memorial JuniorSchool. Sheretired as Principal of Mountview RoadSchool in 2012after 13 years.Mrs. Spina graduated with a BA in Education, and later obtained her MA in Urban Education - Administration/Supervision from New Jersey City University. She taught formany years in Wharton, and East Hanover. She worked forthe Department of Education in Trenton as the Program Facilitator for IGE (Individually Guided Education) for 4 years.Mrs. Spina was the Project ROLE Coordinator for the Parsippany Board of Education for 6 years, and the Executive Director of the NJ Consortium for Gifted Programs, Inc. for 10years, before becoming Principal of Hampton School inHampton, NJ, and then Mountview Road School. She is veryhappy to be back in the Hanover Township Public Schools asInterim Assistant Principal at Memorial Junior School.Rosanna Meadis the new SchoolNurse at SalemDrive School. Shegraduated from Rutgers University witha Bachelors of Science in Nursing.She received her NJSchool Nurse certification through Rutgers, and did herschool nurse practicum at Whippany Park High School. Priorto becoming a school nurse, Mrs. Mead was an orthopedic certified nurse and has seven years of experience working inPostop Med/Surge in Englewood Hospital and Medical Centerand Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville. In her free time sheenjoys hiking, spending timewith familyandfriends,cooking,and traveling.Art teacher, Sharon McLaughlin paints a Viking on a freshly painted wall in the newly renovated library at Memorial Junior School.VO L U ME 9 , I S SU E 1Jessica Sainato is along term substitute 4th gradeteacher at BeeMeadow School.She attended theUniversity ofSouth Carolinawhere she obtaineda BA in elementary education andmiddle school math. She taught 5th grade in HalifaxCounty Public Schools in Halifax, Virginia for 2 years.Miss Sainato is very excited to be teaching in HanoverTownship as she is a product of the school system. Whenshe is not in the classroom, she enjoys cooking, baking,doing arts and crafts, reading, spending time with familyand friends, watching movies, and eating ice cream.SharonMcLaughlin is an ArtTeacher at MemorialJunior School. Sheearned her BA in FineArts at MontclairState University. Shehas 15 years of experience teaching art,including 6 in Hanover Township at Salem Drive and BeeMeadow schools. She is really thrilled to be back in theHanover Township Public Schools! In her free time sheloves to travel, read, visit museums, and spend lots of timewith her 2 new rescue dogs. They are 3-year old Papillionsand are so cute!Christine Mulligan is a Healthand Physical Education Teacher at Memorial JuniorSchool. She graduated from KeanUniversity with aBA in Health andPhysical Education.She taught in WestOrange and Florham Park prior to coming to Hanover Township PublicSchools, where she served as a long term substitute for thesecond half of the school year last year. After being a stayat home Mom for 11 years, she is so grateful to be able toget back to what she loves teaching Health and PhysicalEducation. In her spare time, Mrs. Mulligan enjoys reading, and coaching her children in various sports.Page 3

Meet Our Excellent New StaffChristopherBecker is a Healthand Physical Education Teacher atMemorial JuniorSchool. He attended MontclairState University,where he playedcollege football forall 4 years. Hegraduated with aBA, and then obtained a Masters in the Art of TeachingHealth and Physical Education. Before joining the HanoverTownship Public Schools, Mr. Becker taught middle schoolin Montville Township and Hillsborough Township publicschools. He also has extensive experience in coaching football. In his free time, he enjoys fitness, golf, and other outdoor activities. Mr. Becker is a Giants, and Yankees fan.Kristin Wagner is a KindergartenTeacher atBee MeadowSchool. Shegraduatedfrom Caldwell University with aBA in Elementary Education andSocial Studies. Miss Wagner student taught in a second grade classroomin Roseland, NJ. She is a product of the Hanover TownshipPublic Schools and is extremely excited for the opportunityto be able to teach here. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with friends and family, baking, photography, andcrafting.Rachael Rhodes is thelong term substitute SchoolCounselor at MountviewRoad School. She earnedher BA in Clinical Sociology from Ithaca College,and a Master of Educationin School Counseling fromKent State University inOhio. She was an elementary school counselor inOhio before moving to New Jersey. Mrs. Rhodes served as along term substitute counselor in Riverview School in Denville prior to coming to Hanover Township. She is a motherof two fun and very energetic boys. Mrs. Rhodes is an avidreader. Shegraduated fromRowan University with a BAin ElementaryEducation, Special Education,and American Studies. She completed her student teachingin Hopewell Crest, NJ teaching second grade, and a K-4self-contained class for students with multiple disabilities.In her free time she enjoys kayaking, camping, relaxing onthe beach, and spending time with family and friends.Flora Manuzzi isa KindergartenTeacher at BeeMeadow School.She graduatedfrom MontclairState Universitywith a BA inEarly to MiddleChildhood Education. MissManuzzi completed her student teaching at Fernbrook Elementary Schoolin Randolph, and taught in Jersey City and Florham Park.She also helps out at her family’s restaurant, Johnny’s Pizzeria in Whippany. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, running, and spending time with family and friends.Catherine Parrillo isa long term substitute 5th GradeTeacher at BeeMeadow School.She graduated fromFlorida State University with a BS,and then earned herMAT from Marygrove College. Shewas an elementary and a middle school teacher beforeswitching gears when her daughter was born. She was theregional manager for Science Adventures, owned and operated an Oxford Learning Center, and was the Coordinator ofEnrichment Programs, which includes summer College forKids, and Morris County Teen Arts Festival, at CCM.When she had to cover a class for a sick teacher, she realizedhow much she missed teaching. Meet Our Excellent New StaffJennifer Vastais the new MathTeacher at Memorial Junior School.She graduated fromCentenary Collegewith a BS in Mathematics and certification as a K-12Teacher of Mathematics and Elementary Education. Ms.Vasta joins the Memorial Junior School family after spending two years as an8th grade mathematics teacher in New Milford, NJ. In college she played basketball, softball, and cross country. In herspare time, Ms. Vasta enjoys running, playing sports, goingto the movies, and watching her New York Yankees.Lyndsey Merten isa long term substitute3rd Grade Teacher atBee Meadow School.She graduated fromRutgers University witha BA in English and aminor in Psychology,and is currently pursuing a MA in SpecialEducation at College ofSaint Elizabeth. Ms.Merten completed herstudent teaching in a second grade classroom, and served as along term substitute second grade teacher in Franklin Township. When she is not working or attending classes she enjoys reading and researching about fitness and nutrition. Sheis very passionate about healthy living, and loves to be a partof someone’s effort to eat well and move towards a longer,stronger life.Dana Hollywoodis a KindergartenTeacher at SalemDrive School. Shegraduated from Caldwell College with aBA in ElementaryEducation and English,and is currently pursuing a MA in SpecialEducation. Ms. Hollywood completed herstudent teaching in afirst grade classroom in Nutley. She served as a second gradelong term substitute teacher at Salem Drive School last year.In her free time she enjoys traveling, hiking, going to thebeach, and spending time with family and friends.VO L U ME 9 , I S SU E 1MaureenAllieri is a KindergartenTeacher atMountview RoadSchool. Shegraduated fromWilliam PatersonUniversity with aBA in EarlyChildhood Education. She hasmany years ofexperience as a teacher. Most recently she served as along term substitute teacher at Mountview Road School.She is really excited to be back this year! Mrs. Allieri’shobbies include fitness.Jessica Torresis the newSpanishTeacher at Memorial JuniorSchool. She isa graduate ofSaint Peter’sUniversity.Before comingto the HanoverTownship Public Schools, Ms. Torres taught at Union City High Schoolin Union City, NJ. In her free time Ms Torres loves toread Spanish literature and poetry, and books about successful teachers. She also likes playing and watchingsports, and spending time outside enjoying nature.Christina Kalavrouziotis is a Kindergarten Teacherat MountviewRoad School. Shegraduated from theUniversity of Vermont with a BS inElementary Education, and obtainedher Master’s inTeaching Literacy from Touro College. Mrs. Kalavrouziotis taught in New York City before moving to NewJersey. She taught at Salem Drive and Mountview Roadschools before taking some time off to raise her family.Mrs. Kalavrouziotis returned as a long term substituteteacher at SDS in 2013 and MTV last year. She has threechildren. As a family they enjoy riding bikes and scooters,playing Uno, Memory and other board games, reading, andmovie nights. She also loves to travel, and cook. She isexcited to teach again in Hanover Township.Page 5

Meet Our Excellent New StaffSamantha Sheets is a Kindergarten Teacher at Bee MeadowSchool. She graduated from Misericordia University with a BAin Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and is certifiedto teach Preschool through Grade 3, and K-5. She has beenemployed in the Hanover Township School Age Child Careprogram for many years. Miss Sheets also gained valuableexperience as an instructional aide in Livingston for 4 years.Most recently she served as a long term substitute teacher atSalem Drive School from January to June 2014.Stephanie Shapiro is a Resource Center Teacher at Memorial Junior, and Mountview Road schools. She graduated from SUNY Cortland with a BA in Childhood Education, and earned a M.Ed. in Special Education at theUniversity of Rochester. Ms. Shapiro began her careerteaching third grade in Rochester for 2 years. She thentook her love for traveling and taught English in Israel for18 months. Upon her return she taught special educationin NYC prior to moving to NJ. She is very excited to beteaching in Hanover Township .In June 2014, author, Wendy Mass came to Memorial Junior School. Pictured above isMrs. Kelly Kiff and students with Ms. Wendy Mass.Michelle Ricciardi is the Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant at Bee Meadow School. She graduated from BostonUniversity with a BS in Secondary English Education. Sheearned a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership at the University ofNevada, and a M.A.T in Elementary and Special Educationand received her LDTC certification from Fairleigh DickinsonUniversity. Ms. Ricciardi has experience teaching elementaryand special education. She completed her LDTC internship inNew Milford.
