Russian 1IntroductionRussian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Thismeans that you will need to learn to associate Russiansounds with what is probably a new system of symbols.A complete listing of the Cyrillic alphabet and thesounds of its letters follows, starting on page Youshould use this for reference only, however, as all theinformation you need to do the readings is containedon the audio along with the reading lessons.There are sixteen reading lessons for Russian 1, allcontained, along with instructions, at the end of theprogram. You may choose to do the readings alongwith the audio lessons, after every other lesson or so,or you may want to wait and do them all together, aftercompleting the rest of the course. Feel free to repeatthe reading lessons as often as needed for practicewith the Cyrillic alphabet and its sounds.Written Russian appears in the Cyrillic alphabet,the invention of which is traditionally credited to SaintCyril, a ninth-century Russian monk. Today, the Cyrillicalphabet is also used to represent many of the (mainlySlavic) languages spoken in Eastern Europe, rangingfrom Belorussian to Macedonian. Derived from theGreek alphabet, Cyrillic is a phonetic system, withsome symbols added or altered to represent soundsunique to these languages.If you are not familiar with the Cyrillic alphabet,you may first find that it takes some time to associatethe appropriate sounds with each letter and/or group

With a little effort, you will be astonished at howquickly you are reading Russian.The Cyrillic alphabet comprises 33 letters, listed inorder, along with a guide to the sounds representedby each letter.
