I joined the Exchange Buddies clubas well as the Dance Society. The Exchange Buddies club matchyou with an Australian student which can definitely be helpfulduring the first few weeks. They also do day trips on Saturdayswhere you get to meet other exchange students and even someAustralians. Your home awayfrom homeWe know there are many things you’ll need to organisefor your study abroad experience. Our guaranteedaccommodation service means your ‘home awayfrom home’ is all set. Brisbane offers a wide range ofaccommodation options, including homestay with anAustralian family, shared living, independent living,and purpose-built student accommodation near or oncampus.QUT’s Accommodation Service will provide you withinformation and advice to secure accommodation.HomestayQUT staff interview eligible local families who offer room andboard to our students. Homestay costs between 285 and 315each week, depending on how many meals are provided. Thistypically covers all utilities (water, gas, and electricity). Internet andphone contributions are extra.Purpose-built studentaccommodationStudent residential apartment buildings offer individual bedroomswith some shared amenities. The rent usually includes a bed, studydesk, some storage, and shared bathrooms, kitchens, and commonrooms. The price ranges from 265 to 500 each week. Cost ofutilities and internet are usually included, but please be sure tocheck this before you sign up. All student apartment complexes arecentrally located and are close to transport or walking distance tocampus. Many are less than five minutes’ walk from QUT.Managed share-houseThere are several Student Accommodation companies orReal Estate Agents that specialise in student share-houseaccommodation. This means a residential house is convertedinto separate fully-furnished, lockable bedrooms. Students sharecommon areas such as the kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Theprice ranges from 165 to 300 each week and usually includesutilities and internet.Private share-house accommodationThis option is similar to the managed share house but is moreflexible with their operation. For example, they are often preparedto negotiate lease duration (less than six months) and sometimesare even prepared to negotiate the weekly rental rate. Utilitieswould not typically be included.
