THE presidential MEDALLIONThe University of Central Missouri’s PresidentialMedallion was introduced during the inaugurationceremony for UCM’s 16th president Dr. Roger J. Beston April 18, 2019. Designed by staff in the Office ofIntegrated Marketing and Communications, the nickelsilver, antique finish medallion features as the centralfocal piece a three-inch in diameter round medalthat includes the university’s academic logo with theyear of the institution’s founding in 1871, and themotto “Education for Service.” Other componentsinclude two 1.5 inch diameter university seals, andcurved banners that are linked together and list thenames of each university president who served theinstitution since its founding and their years of service. The medallion is to be worn at ceremonial functions, including commencement ceremonies.THE UNIVERSITY MACEThe University Mace was designed and produced forthe inauguration of Dr. Ed Elliott as president in 1985.As a historical note, maces were first used duringRoman times. The first mace was a weapon-like staff, composed of a group of reeds surrounding an axe.Mace bearers would walk in front of the person inauthority. Maces were later used in England, again assymbols of authority in the court systems. The staff wascarried by a judge or transported for him by a macebearer. As the American court system developed fromthe English courts, the mace also became a symbol ofauthority in America. The University of Central Missouri’s mace is madeof native walnut and bronze, and is topped with asomewhat stylized flame, which, like light, stands fortruth and knowledge. Beneath the flame are inlaiddisks of cardinal and black, the university colors.Continuing down the mace, a large sphere is decoratedwith carvings of major buildings on campus. Holdingthe ball are simple finger-like formations, which standfor service. The reeding, or half-columns, on the macesymbolizes tradition in education and togetherness –small parts working together to support the whole.Bronze books and mortarboards with tassels aresymbols of academia and education, and bronzecasts of Missouri represent UCM’s home state and thecitizens it serves. The handle of the mace is spiraled, which denotes growth and progression. The mace, completed with a hand-rubbed oil finish, weighsapproximately 14 pounds.4The base for the staff is bronze and weighs close to20 pounds. It is adorned with centennial medallionsand Missouri mules in harness, denoting the reliable, workaday university mascot. When not used for ceremonial purposes, the macestands in its base in the Office of the President. TheUniversity Mace is carried at ceremonial functions bythe university marshal, who precedes the universitypresident in the processional. By tradition at theUniversity of Central Missouri, the university marshalis the president of the Faculty Senate. The construction of the mace was a team effort. Boardof Regents member Edna Mae Whitsitt contacted RichMonson of the Art Department for design assistance.Monson developed several designs, and a committeeconsisting of Ophelia Gilbert, Alice Gower, Monson,Norma Van Zee, and Whitsitt selected the design to beused. Jack Landers, faculty member in the Departmentof Manufacturing and Construction, built the walnutcore of the mace. Monson and Richard Allman, ArtDepartment, cast and assembled the bronze pieces.Robert Tompkins, Department of Physical Education, carved the frieze, and Joseph Albrecht, Manufacturingand Construction, fashioned a bronze stem to join abase that was cast by Monson and George Sample,Art Department. Additional assistance was providedby art faculty members Jerry Miller, Harold Reynoldsand Billi Rothove.5

ACADEMIC REGALIAAcademic regalia of robe and hood are believed tohave had their beginnings at the English universitiesof Oxford and Cambridge during the 12th and 13thcenturies. The hoods are a carryover from the timeswhen the monks, who operated the universities, worethem to protect their shaved heads in winter or tocollect alms when worn as shoulder capes.Use of the academic robe came to the United Statesin 1754 with the founding of what is now ColumbiaUniversity. In 1895, a commission of university officialsadopted a universal code of design and color foracademic garb. It has undergone various revisions, the latest in 1960. Styling of robes varies for thebachelor’s, master’s, education specialist and doctoraldegrees and the width of border and length of hoodincrease with the type of degree. The color of the velvetborder of the hood indicates the field of study, while thelining designates the colors of the institution grantingthe degree. The gown for the bachelor’s degree haspointed sleeves and is worn closed. The gown for themaster’s degree and the education specialist degreehas an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist with the rearpart of its oblong shape square cut and the front partwith an arc cutaway. It may be worn open or closed. The doctoral gown is faced with black velvet andhas three bars across the bell-shaped sleeves. Thesefacings and crossbars may be of colored velvet torepresent the degree, and agree in color with thebinding or edging of the hood. The tassel for the capmay be of gold thread. The colors of representative fields are:Arts, Letters, and Humanities . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
