CelebratingRemembering Our PastBetsy Johnson Hospital is celebrating a 75-year tradition of compassion, careand community support. Founded in 1937, the hospital was made possible by ananonymous donation from a Dunn citizen who had a vision for local healthcare. The donor wanted quality care for people regardless of race, creed, color orability to pay.The original three-story facility named Dunn Hospital, Inc. was built on North Ellis Avenue. The hospital grewto 85 beds, and by 1956 an expansion was greatly needed. The original anonymous donor once again madea contribution for the expansion project and was convinced by hospital board members that Dunn Hospital’sname should be changed and the donor’s identitybe made known. In December 1956, the hospital’sname was changed to Betsy Johnson MemorialHospital in memory of the mother of the soledonor – Nathan M. Johnson, Sr., a prominent Dunnbusinessman. Throughout the hospital’s journey, theJohnson Family has been a constant source of highlyappreciated support.By the early 1960s more beds were needed, and thedecision was made to build a new 115-bed facility ona 35-acre tract of land. The new hospital openedin 1968 on Tilghman Drive. During the 1970s and1980s the hospital aggressively recruited physicians and updated itsservices including physical therapy and respiratory therapy and added a day-surgery department, a CT scanner,a mammography unit, ultrasound services, stress testing and echocardiography services. In 1996, Betsy JohnsonMemorial Hospital was transferred to a private, not-for-profit organization and placed under the authority ofa board of trustees to allow for expanded services, and the name was changed to Betsy Johnson RegionalHospital. Nine years later, the hospital entered into a management agreement with WakeMed Health & Hospitals, creating “Harnett Health System.” The new not-for-profit health system would allow expanded access to carein Harnett County and would be locally-owned, operated and directed by a 13-member board with citizenrepresentation from across Harnett County.4

ving.”- Mother TeresaFor most, the reason for giving begins at home. We want outstanding care for our loved ones. Most of us, or someone welove, have been cared for by our local hospital. Through the Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital Foundation, a part of HarnettHealth System, you can invest to ensure outstanding care is available to all who live, work, and visit our area. You might ask, “Why does the Foundation exist?” Funding from government and private insurance programs providesessential health services but it cannot pay for everything. The Foundation’s role is to fill the gap, to provide a personaltouch for patients with extraordinary need and to expand access to care. The Foundation has continued to inform the citizens of Harnett County of its mission. Chairman T.C. Godwin reflects, “It’snot so much about the money, but where the money goes and how it’s used to treat patients. I take pride in the work theFoundation has done to better healthcare in our area.”The Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital Foundation continues to support and encourage compassionate patient care byhelping purchase advanced technologies and equipment in its facilities.Harnett Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Ken Bryan added, “We continue the mandate set by NathanM. Johnson, Sr. when he gave the first donation to start the hospital – to provide quality care for people regardless of race, creed, color, or ability to pay. Seventeen percent of the care provided at Betsy Johnson Hospital is free to residents whoneed it. We are a safety net for people in our area, and we need your support to be able to meet Mr. Johnson’s vision andto continue to provide healthcare for you and all area residents.”The Foundation provides various ways to make a donation and will work with donors to offer the best alternative includingthe options of one-time donations and multi-year pledges for specific projects or equipment purchases, and/or theestablishment of scholarships.Harnett Health System employees at Betsy Johnson Hospital, Central Harnett Hospital, our physician practices, andour cardiac rehabilitation center are committed to serving you.
