The following explains our needs andrequirements:1. Space is limited and not every picturesubmitted can be used.2. We prefer action shots of Kiwanians “inaction” performing community service. We tryto avoid what are known in the newspaperbusiness as “grin & grip” photos. These aredefined as two or more people looking at theI got an exciting e-mail from CharlieNordeck, the secretary of the DaffodilValley Kiwanis Club in Puyallup, inApril 2003. He told me about JimOwens, Executive Director of theC.A.S.T. Foundation, who had justpresented a program to his club.I set-up a meeting with Jim to seewhat Charlie’s excitement was allabout.JimisfromRenton,Washington. At our luncheon meeting,he detailed his fishing program forchildren with disabilities. Jimexplained how he had taken theFoundation from Renton to manyparts of the U.S. He explained how hisFoundation partnered with othergroups to bring a once in a lifetimeexperience to many children. Severalclubs in our District were already participants, and we discussed how PNWKiwanians might further get involved, especially those already runningcamps for disabled children. Threeterms he continually used caught myattention: Service, Underprivileged, and Children. He talked like a Kiwanian, acted likea Kiwanian, had the service spirit of aKiwanian, but he was not wearing theK. I simply asked Jim to join Kiwanis. The following week, I took him to theRenton Kiwanis club and introducedhim to the members. President EdwardTasca assigned Roxanne to be hismentor. I had the honor of inductingJim Owens into the Kiwanis Club ofRenton on Tuesday, May 27. Jimbecame the third member I have sponsored, or co-sponsored this year. I stillneed two more to reach five for myseat at the Governor’s Reserved Tablein Yakima. I do not think this will be aproblem, because I will keep “Asking”.When we bring new members intoKiwanis, we have a lot to offer. Weoffer opportunities. Opportunities formembers to meet new friends anddevelop lasting relationships, developbusiness contacts through networking, amplify their ability to serve others, enjoy the fun and fellowship of otherswith similar values, personal growthand leadership development, and asense of pride in serving the needs ofchildren worldwide. With only about three months to goin this administrative year, I am askingfor your special commitment to helpoffer the Kiwanis opportunity to othersso we can do even more service for ourcommunities. I am also asking clubleaders to consider undertaking theresponsibility of sponsoring a newclub. I have found that existing clubsare often made stronger by the newclub building experiencing. Anotherclub started every club in this District. It takes a President and a board to say,“Let’s Do It”. We have the resourcesto help, beginning with your Lt.Governor. For the next five years thereafter, District Dueswould have a step increase of 1.00 per year per member except that, in any yearthat the District’s Paid Membership exceeds 15,000 members, the step increasefor the following year would be suspended. The Paid membership of theDistrict, as of October 1, 2002 was 12,110 members.District dues were last raised by a vote of the House of Delegates at the 82ndAnnual District Convention held in Victoria, British Columbia. That bodyapproved an increase of 7.00 per member. As a result, District dues went from 18.00 to 25.00 per year on October 1, 1999. The membership of the District, atthe time that increase was approved, stood at 14,617 members. The dues adjustment that the District is proposing in 2003 has been madenecessary by the loss of revenue caused by continued membership losses. Thatloss in revenue is now exceeding 60,000 per year. The impact on the budget isaggravated, of course, by the normal inflation of the price of goods and servicesneeded to operate the District.Despite these losses, the Finance Committee is proud that, through diligentmanagement and cost-cutting measures, the District has been able to bring in abalanced budget every year since 1999. However, we have now reached thepoint where a increase in dues revenue is mandatory — if the District is to avoidunacceptable cuts in programs and services. If approved, the first year’s increase of 5.00 per member will restore approximately 60,000 a year to the district budget. The committee has also proposedstep increases of 1.00 per year for five years in order to inflation-proof the district in the future. That smaller step increases will also help member clubs intheir budgeting process and allow the District to avoid large dues increases inthe future. Because an increase in District membership would provide a positiveimpact on revenues, the amendment has a mechanism to suspend the yearlyincreases. This proposed amendment was adopted by the Finance & FundraisingCommittee at their meeting of November 1, 2002 held in SeaTac, Washington. Itwas submitted to the District Board of Trustees at their meeting of March 2, 2003which was held in Richmond, British Columbia. At that meeting, the Boardformally approved presenting it to the House of Delegates at the YakimaConvention in August.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST DISTRICT BUILDERCREACH OUT!WE TSBy Jim McAllisterPA C I FIWe Feel Good!Page 5Did you know that Kiwanis Clubs in the PacificNorthwest District have an opportunity to help ourSponsored Organizations and Programs (SOAP) such asCircle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Clubwithout even being a club sponsor?HJune - 2003N O RTPNW Circle K AdministratorApril 1, 2003 is the beginning of the CKI year. And on the 27th of May our firstnew CKI Club was chartered. Yes, the signs of new growth and energy arebusting out all over the Pacific Northwest District. My thanks to all in the Seattlearea that have made this new CKI club possible. The Pacific Northwest Districtheld the first ever LeaderScape weekend in our district. This KiwanisInternational program offers leadership training for CKI members. Twenty-fiveenergetic participants from three districts spent the weekend at Camp Killoquain Stanwood, Washington. The Facilitator was our own Wendy Fraser, Kiwanismember and past President of CKI. Becky Lea Ibach-Gunsauls, District Treasurerand Rachelle Strawther, District Governor assisted her. What a job they did. Allthat participated want to do it again next year and Kiwanis International waspleased with the attendance and strength of the workshop and agrees to workwith us again. The Pacific Northwest Foundation and the Canadian Foundation offered19 Scholarship to assist in the cost of the weekend for the students. CKI sends abig “THANK YOU” to both foundations for their support and promotion ofleadership skills for CKI. In the past the PNW sent one or two students each yearto Indianapolis for training. By hosting the weekend, we were able to increasethe number attending and bring in students from other districts. We had twostudents from Kansas and one from the Utah-Idaho District.Governor Rachelle has gotten the CKI year off to a wonderful start. She has anoutstanding board and a very talented group of committee chairs and committeemembers. You will want to be a part of this exciting team. My hat goes of to theCKI Club Advisors and to the College and University staff advisors. They are thefront line and what we do depends on their support, time, encouragement, andpatience. And you the sponsoring clubs are our key to success. With no sponsorsthere is no CKI. If your club is not now sponsoring a CKI and you have a collegeor university near you, I encourage you to explore the possibility. If you dare toget involved it will change the life of your club and you as a Kiwanian for the better. I have said it before, but will say again just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to serve as the District CKI Administrator. Dick Rust, AssistantAdministrator and I are ready to work with any Kiwanis club that wants tobecome a sponsoring club.I want to thank Mike Wallis for his years of service to the PNW Key Club. Hehas taken our sponsored programs to a new level and we are all better becauseMike gave us so much of his time. And to Teela Evans, we send congratulationsfrom each CKI member for her appointment as District Administrator for KeyClub. We look forward to working with you and taking our sponsored programsto an even higher level. Our students will soon be returning to their homes for the summer. A numberhave graduated and would make excellent members of your Kiwanis club. Invitethem, you will profit from their energy and enthusiasm and they will profit fromyour experience. Don’t let them slip into another service organization because wedid not ask.In October Bill Packard will become President of the Kiwanis InternationalFoundation. I challenge every Kiwanis club in our district to participate in theInternational Foundation. When we do we will get 5 matching scholarshipsinstead of the current one. We can pay tribute to the honor Bill brings to thePNW and help our CKI members at the same time. So as you prepare your clubbudgets for the 2004-2005 year, please put in funds for our InternationalFoundation, District Foundation and Canadian Foundation. Another way youcan help CKI and our other sponsored programs are by making a monthlydonation from your club service funds to the Out Reach program. This moneygoes directly to our sponsored youth with 75% currently going to CKI. Cleve hasdesigned a beautiful four color, embroidered banner patch for all clubs whodonate 120.00. Yes, now is the time to join in the fun and be a part of our CKIprogram. You will be glad that you did, I know that I am!Green & GrowingBy Rachelle StrawtherPURPOSE: To underwrite certain administrativeexpenses of Sponsored Programs at the District level nototherwise covered by their own dues or sponsorship fees. The funds also may be used to help with the non-reimbursedtravel expenses of adult and youth leaders for new clubbuilding and chartering.WHY YOUR CLUB SHOULD BE A SPONSORED YOUTH OUTREACH SUPPORTERYouth club administrative budgets are strapped beyond their means to generate fundsFunds available for this purpose from the Pacific Northwest District come from Member Dues and are limitedClubs who sponsor a Key Club, Circle K Club or other Sponsored Program should not be expected to have to underwrite the entiredistrict support for these clubs. Outreach opens the door for the involvement of every Kiwanis Club.Support of our Sponsored Programs are an investment in the future of Kiwanis. As our youth moves through K-Kids to Builders toKey Club and Circle K, the next logical step for them is membership in a Kiwanis Club. Every Kiwanis Club benefits from ourSponsored Programs – both in community goodwill AND as a source for future members.KIWANIS RECOGNITIONClub Ratings – 0.1 points on Club Monthly Report for each 1.00 contributed in a month(Minimum Monthly Contribution is 10.00 in order to receive credit)Banner Patch – A beautiful, four color, embroidered banner patch will be awarded to each club who donates a minimum of 120.00USD in any administrative year.HOW TO BECOME AN OUTREACH SUPPORTERSend at least 10.00 USD ( 16.00 Canadian) to the District Office marked “Sponsored Outreach.” (Pleasealso see Instruction #14 in the 2002-2003 Official Monthly Report Guidelines.) Kiwanian’s have a wealth of information to share about their careers and our goal is totap this resource to insure the academic and professional success of Circle K members. Whether Kiwanismembers would be willing to answer questions about their career, offer internships, mentorships, or othercontacts for employment, this database will serve as a bridge between college students and Kiwaniansthroughout the district. We Need Kiwanian support:The goal is to have 75% of every Kiwanis club registered by July of 2003 sothat the database can be up and running by the 03-04 school year. We ask that every member take amoment to fill out the survey and give thought to what they believe they can offer to college students. Weknow that every member has something to offer and we are looking forward to hearing back from all of theKiwanis clubs throughout the northwest. Each club president should mail a single packet of completed forms to:Jordanna Chord; 525 Irwin; Anchorage, AK 99508PNW Circle K GovernorName:Employer:With 14 strong District Committee Chair appointments and a confident Boardof Officers, PNW Circle K is off to a great start!
