It is with great joy andanticipation that I look forward to us gathering together for the 53rd Session of the East Ohio AnnualConference on Thursday, June 9 through Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the John S. Knight Center in Akron,Ohio. When we gather in June it will have been three years since we have met together in-person and Ican only imagine how the Spirit of God will be present and moving among us as we embrace this longawaited time of reunion.Our Annual Conference theme is “Let Us Live LOVE” (1 John 4:7-13 NIV). Our worship services, plenarygatherings and learning sessions will celebrate and give witness to how the love of God, the grace of ourLord and Savior Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit is and has been at work through the laity,clergy, and the ministries of the East Ohio Conference BEING witnesses and putting LOVE into action in innovative and transforming ways. Together we will explore and renew our commitment to growmore in love with Jesus, to grow more in our capacity to love and embrace one another, and to growmore in love and in concern for our neighbors.I will be preaching the Service of Commemoration and Holy Communion and giving an Episcopal Addresson Thursday, June 9. Bishop Laura Barbins, ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod, will preach the Service ofCommissioning and Ordination on Saturday, June 11. Rev. Ed Fashbaugh and Pastor Sheena Cameron,pastors in the East Ohio Conference, will be our Friday and Saturday morning preachers.Our teaching sessions will be led by Rev. Dr. Michael Beck, director of Fresh Expressions and co-pastor ofWildwood and St. Marks United Methodist Churches, Florida Annual Conference. We will exploretogether: Contextual Intelligence: Unlocking the Ancient Secret to Mission on the Frontline; 21st CenturyChurch-Planting Anyone Can Do; and Blended Ecology: New People, Younger People, Diverse People.These sessions will take place on Friday and Saturday.This year’s conference offering will benefit EOC Fund 1301 Supporting UMCOR International Relief, TheNehemiah Mission of Cleveland, and the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund.As we meet at the John S. Knight Center, it is my prayer that this will truly be a time of revival andrenewal. Malone has served the East Ohio Conference of The UnitedMethodist Church since September 1, 2016. As resident bishop, she providesspiritual oversight; shares in equipping, teaching, and encouraging mission,outreach, witness, and service; and serves as a shepherd of the church inproviding a prophetic witness of justice, mercy, and unity.Malone serves on the Boards of Trustees at the United Methodist-affiliated colleges, seminaries, andorganizations in East Ohio. She also is currently the president of the General Commission on the Statusand Role of Women, the president-designate of the Council of Bishops, and is a member of the Board ofTrustees of Africa University.During her ministry, she has pastored several churches in the Northern Illinois Conference, been adelegate to four General and Jurisdictional Conferences, served as a district superintendent, and beendean of the Cabinet. She has written chapters for several books, published articles, blogs and bookreviews, and taught courses as an adjunct professor at Aurora University and at Northern BaptistSeminary in Lombard, Illinois.Malone has a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Sociology, with a minor in Computer Science,from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, a Master of Divinity from Garrett-EvangelicalTheological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and a Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary inDayton, Ohio.Bishop Laura BarbinsNortheastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)Bishop Laura Barbins is bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of theEvangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). She was elected bishop onSeptember 11, 2020, took office December 1, 2020, and is serving a six-yearterm. Prior to her call to the Office of Bishop, she was the pastor of CelebrationLutheran Church in Chardon for 19 years, interim pastor of Messiah LutheranChurch in Fairview Park, Ohio for one year, and associate pastor for Youth atHoly Trinity Church in Nashville, Tennessee for two years. Holding a PhD in New Testament andHomiletics, Barbins has also been adjunct professor for Preaching at Trinity Seminary at CapitalUniversity in Columbus since 2018. Trinity is one of seven ELCA seminaries.Barbins earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginiaand a Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg (now UnitedLutheran Seminary) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. United is another of the seven ELCA seminaries. Shealso earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.Bishop Barbins and her husband have four daughters. In her spare time she enjoys gardening and travel.

Ed Fashbaugh was appointed executive director of Connectional Ministrieseffective July 1, 2021, after serving two years as superintendent of the ThreeRivers District.At the time of his appointment to the Cabinet, Fashbaugh was pastor ofCrossroads UMC in Canton, a church birthed from the merger of two churches he served: the formerChurch of the Savior UMC, to which he was appointed in 2004, and the former St. Paul’s UMC, which hewas appointed to also serve in 2012. He has also served North Canton Faith, Garfield Memorial, andSeville UMCs, and was associate Council on Ministries director in the areas of youth, young adult, highereducation, and evangelism.“I have been a follower of Jesus since I was in the ninth grade, and all that I have ever wanted to do wasserve Christ and His Church,” Fashbaugh said.A clergy delegate to the 2000 and the 2004 General and Jurisdictional Conferences, Fashbaugh earned aBachelor of Arts in History Education from Grove City College (PA), and a Master of Divinity fromMethodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO).He and his wife Amy are the proud parents of an adult son and an adult daughter.Pastor Sheena CameronEast Ohio ConferencePastor Sheena Cameron is pastor of Mount Pleasant UMC and St. Paul UMC in theNorth Coast District. She previously served as pastor of Siloam UMC, SmithvilleUMC, and Mt. Holly UMC in the Greater New Jersey Conference.She currently serves on the East Ohio Conference Board of Multicultural Vitalityand on the North Coast District Committee on Ministry. She is also chairwoman ofthe board of Culture Restoration Project Delaware, a nonprofit that provides supplemental education tostudents through arts and chess, serves on the board of the parachurch organization Sikhona, Inc. whichprovides health and wellness training to churches, is a member of the board of Esperanza in Cleveland,and writes for By Faith Magazine, the exclusive communication vehicle for the 2,500 Blackcongregations in The United Methodist Church.Cameron earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Springfield College, a Master of Divinityfrom Princeton Seminary, and a Master of Arts in Counseling from The College of New Jersey. She ispursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Care and implemented her Doctoral project on a traumainformed care model for churches entitled LIFT AS WE CLIMB at Mt. Pleasant and St. Paul UMCs.She and her husband the Rev. Gerald Cameron are active in many social justice initiatives.

He is a spiritual guidewho helps people heal, love, and unleash imagination to create better lives,organizations, and communities. Beck and his wife Jill are co-pastors of WildwoodUMC in Wildwood, Florida, St. Marks UMC in Ocala, Florida, and a network of 13fresh expressions led by laity that gather in tattoo parlors, dog parks, burritojoints, and digital spaces. They direct an inpatient rehab center, a shelter for thoseexperiencing homelessness, and an anti-racism movement.He serves as the director of Fresh Expressions for the Florida Conference of The UMC, director of theFresh Expressions House of Studies at United Theological Seminary, and director of ReMissioning forFresh Expressions US. Beck has a passion for helping laity and clergy plant new forms of church. He helpschurch leaders across the globe follow Jesus in fresh and exciting ways. In addition to teaching as anadjunct professor at several seminaries, he coaches, trains, and educates leaders internationally across abroad theological spectrum and has consulted with hundreds of churches, districts, denominations,networks, synods, and dioceses.Beck earned a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Semiotics andFuture Studies at Portland Seminary with his mentor Leonard Sweet. He’s the author of eight books andis considered a global thought leader in the missional church movement.

East Ohio Annual Conference - 202213RESPONSIBILITY OFTHE LAY MEMBERS OF THE ANNUAL CONFERENCEYou have the honor of being elected as a lay member of the East Ohio Annual Conference. This is anassignment of great responsibility. By virtue of your office*, you are also a member of your ChurchCouncil (¶ 252.5.g), Finance Committee (¶ 258.4) and the Pastor Parish Relations Committee (¶258.2a)**, (above ¶ numbers refer to The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church 2016).Each member has the responsibility to:1)Attend all sessions of the Annual Conference and leave only under emergency conditions andwith the knowledge of his/her district superintendent.2)Become familiar with the organizational structure and existing programs of the AnnualConference, parliamentary procedure, and the Conference rules.3)Study pre-conference reports and become familiar with specific programs and items that mightbe presented during the sessions. Consult with the pastor and church lay leader. While the laymember is obligated only to use his/her own best thinking in the conference, the counsel withothers ahead of time should prove helpful.4)Participate vocally at the Annual Conference and help in policy-making decisions.5)Form his/her own opinions on issues and vote his/her convictions.You should be aware—before you go to Annual Conference—that a report should be made to your localchurch congregation as an extension of the Annual Conference. This may be done at a Sunday morningworship service and/or through a more detailed report at a meeting of the Church Council. In eithercase, it should be done as soon after Annual Conference as feasible. It is best if this is an oral report.However, it may be written in the church newsletter. Check with your pastor before conference aboutscheduling and time limits for the report.The Annual Conference website is a good source of information regarding the actions of AnnualConference. Consult it during and after conference by logging onto www.eocumc.com/eoac22. In yourreporting to your local charge, we suggest that you mention the major issues raised and how they wereresolved and how they might affect your local church. You may want to make reference to theinspirational speakers and leaders. We hope you will talk about the positive aspects of the conference,but it is also important to reflect upon the more controversial aspects of the conference as well.
