Education records aredirectly related to the student and are maintained bythe University. Student educational records areconfidential and will only be shared by Universityofficials with other University faculty or staff or withlending agencies that have a legitimate interest toknow certain information. FERPA prevents therelease of information about a student, other thandirectory information, without the student’s consent.Under FERPA, students are given certain rightsregarding education records: The right to inspect and review educationrecords pertaining to the student kept by theUniversity;The right to request the amendment ofeducation records the student believes to beinaccurate, misleading or otherwise inviolation of his or herprivacy rights;The right to limit disclosure of educationrecords; andThe right to file with the US Department ofEducation, a complaint concerning allegedfailures by the institution to comply with therequirements of FERPA and the regulations.The complaint should be in writing and containspecific allegations of fact. It includes, but is not limited to: thestudent’s name; student’s address; telephone listing;electronic mail address; photograph; date and place ofbirth; major field of study; dates of attendance;classification; enrollment status (undergraduate orgraduate, full-time or part-time); participation inofficially recognized activities and sports; weight andheight of members of athletic teams; degrees, honors,and/or awards received; and previous educationagency or institution attended.Information that can never be identified as directoryinformation are a student’s Social Security number(SNN); student identification number (SID); race andethnicity; gender; religious preference; country ofcitizenship; grades and grade point average; classschedule; disciplinary actions; and biometric record(for example, fingerprints).Disclosure without ConsentPlease note that the University may be permitted orrequired to release educational records without astudent’s consent under the following conditions:school officials with legitimate educational interest;other schools to which a student is transferring;specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;appropriate parties in connection with financial aid toa student; to local officials or authorities pursuant tospecific law regarding the juvenile justice system;organization conducting certain studies10 P a g e
