Annual admissionsfell from 100,000 to 75,000 inthe last four years.A Save the Phoenix campaign began as soon as the newswas announced. Campaignerssay the decision has been madewithout consulting staff or thecommunity and claim there arebetter alternatives which wouldpreserve the cinema’s ethos. Anonline petition calling for thePhoenix to stay independenthad gathered 3,000 signaturesas we went to press. Why is the dealbeing made? The ten members of theBoard of Trustees, all volunteers, say general changesin cinema-going habits andincreased local competitionfrom the likes of the Everymanin Muswell Hill have hit ticketsales badly, leaving them withless money to invest in the futureof the Phoenix.Trustee Alison Gold told TheArcher: “The cinema is at serious risk of insolvency and thetrust is working hard to avoidthat. We have considered otheroptions, including remainingindependent, but believe that apartnership with Curzon offersgreater security as well asbringing some new benefits tothe Phoenix staff and its community.”What are the concerns?Campaigners say the independence of the Phoenix isbeing surrendered and Curzonwill ultimately be able to makeits own decisions about staffing and programming. Theywant the Trust to consideralternatives like communityfundraising to keep the cinemagoing as an independent, pointing out that the Phoenix raisedmore than 1 million for itscentenary restoration project.Lauren Wright, from theSave the Phoenix campaign, said: “Rather than building onthis, fundraising has been limited. Save The Phoenix is callingon the board to pause, listen tothe community, and make surethey have exhausted all otheroptions before going down thisextreme path.”The campaign said theCurzon deal had been arrangedwithout consultation with anystaff or the local communityfor whom the Phoenix CinemaTrust was set up.The Trust argues that ithad to maintain confidentiality around the deal until it wassecure enough to make publicand states that the cinema willremain in local hands as theTrust will retain ownership ofthe building and continue tooversee community and education activities for local people. What impact will it have?Phoenix staff have been toldthat their jobs will be transferredto the new operators and thatthey will be paid the LondonLiving Wage for the first time.Save the Phoenix campaignersargue that there is no guaranteeredundancies won’t be madeonce the transfer is complete.Continued on page 2. 3The Archer - www.the-archer.co.ukOCTOBER 2018Nursery plans forBobath Centre siteBy Daphne ChamberlainThe Bobath Centre will leave its site at East End Roadon 25 November. The new owners, 250 East End RoadLLP, run by 13 investment companies and representedby international estate agency Savills, have submitted aplanning application to Barnet Council which involvesamendments to the Grade 2 listed frontage of the existingbuilding, demolishing unlisted extensions and replacingwith new ones, and creating an outside play area. The application states thatthe new extensions will keep tothe same roof line as the Grade2 frontage. Barnet Planning andConservation Officers visitedthe site in June, and originalproposals for the western parthave been amended. The new owners state in theirapplication that they have cometo an arrangement with a children’s nursery. This means theydon’t have to apply for changeof use, as the Bobath Centrewas used to assist children withcerebral palsy.Questions and concernsHowever, the proposals donot cover the entire site. A largearea of land at the back willbe separated by a temporaryboundary, “to ensure safetyand security to nursery users”.Many people are questioningthe future of this unused land, and indeed the proposed nurseryprovision. The plans indicate a nurseryfor up to 170 children, with 26staff. Storage, staff space andplayground size appear to many tobe insufficient, and it is not clearthat a new nursery on these lines isneeded in this area anyway. Existing nurseries Monkey Puzzle andScribbles have both stated thatthey are not involved. An extensive internationalnursery chain, actively lookingfor new sites, has requirementscorresponding closely to thespace in the planning application, but neither they nor Savillshave answered enquiries fromThe Archer.Neighbours also questionthe viability of the scheme. The plans provide only four carspaces and one disability space, but 12 cycle areas.Dropping off times are estimated as three minutes, whichseems unrealistically short, andthere are concerns about trafficcongestion around the entranceand exit to the site.Fun Palace for allA reminder from last month’s edition that EastFinchley Library will be hosting a free festival of arts, music, sports, science and dance on Saturday 6 October. The Grange Big Local FunPalace will feature music MC’edby Benteki, of Reprezent radio, with football run by the MondayClub, cheerleading from Saracens, free manicures from ValesNails, dance from SOTOCIC, art with East FinchleyOpen Artists, the chance tolook for aliens with Mill HillObservatory and much more. Also on display will be information from the archives ofEast Finchley Library, andorganisers are hoping to collect stories about it frompeople who have used it overthe years.
