The City isa pacesetter organization,which means our campaignbegins in August and endsin October.Each year, the City setsgoals for the departmentsalong with a citywide goal.Last year, City employeescontributed more than 1 million to agenciesin our community. Thisyear, the goal is to raise 1,025,000 across the Citywith DHS contributing 38,000. Thus far, the DHSCampaign has alreadyraised 38,174, exceedingour goal! We are well onour way to exceed last year’sdonation of 42,000. We willcontinue through Octoberto take donations to makethis the most successfulCharitable Campaign in ourdepartment’s history.DHS coordinatorsJoe Martinelli and EdithMerla have led this year’scampaign with supportfrom division leaders Child Care Services - JamieTimmerman and BettyGonzales; Family Assistance- Norma Hernandez andHilda Banuelos; Head Start- Chantelle Stoops; SeniorServices - Danica Brown;Fiscal - Omar Garza; andDirector’s Office - JessicaDovalina.I appreciate the workthis team has done to makethe campaign successful.This year, if you pledge 60 or more with E-Wayor pledge form, and incompliance with the DHSDress Code, you may wearjeans on Friday and otherdesignated days during theyear. This equates to 2.50per pay period at that level.Beginning in September,this will be the only time forcurrent employees to joinCharitable Campaign JeanDays. BlackdCommunity Center hostedthe 11th annual Back2 School Jamboree onAugust 12.Hundreds of familiesattended the event, whichincluded free backpacksfilled with school supplies,and dozens of communitygroups providinginformation and services,including immunizations for back to school.Refreshments and child-friendly activities keptfamilies busy.The Spurs Coyote and other mascots made anappearance to the crowd’s delight.Faces&PlacesDistrict 1 holds wellness fairCouncilman Roberto C. Treviño’s office heldthe annual District 1 Back to School WellnessFair on August 13 at Thomas Edison High School.School-aged children received a backpack filledwith school supplies. Additionally, there weremore than 40 community and wellness partners,including the Department of Human Services,providing services ranging from haircuts to dentalscreenings.Festivities began early on August 11 as theDistrict 1 office distributed the first 300 of 2,200backpacks to the Frank Garrett Center and toVFW Post 76, the oldest VFW post in Texas.“On average, teachers will spendapproximately 500 of their hard-earned moneyto provide school supplies to students each schoolyear,” Councilman Treviño said. “By providingbackpacks and school supplies for 2,200 totalstudents, we hope to save San Antonio areateachers 55,000.”TEAMWORK INTEGRITY CITY OF SAN ANTONIO DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES INNOVATION PROFESSIONALISM

As the communitychanges, it is important to adaptprograms to best serve the needsof the most vulnerable.The outreach summitevent, held at the San AntonioArea Foundation on PearlParkway, brought togetherfrontline outreach staff and theirTEAMWORK INTEGRITY encampments, and pinpointedunderserved areas.
