S IG NAT U R E A R E AS OF DI ST I NC T IONSP 3.0 reaffirms our commitment tothe three signature areas that drawfrom disciplines across the universityand integrate research, engagementand teaching at both graduate andundergraduate levels. The role of landgrant universities in the 21st century willevolve from a primary focus of providinginformation to individual stakeholders forprivate consumption to include a broaderfocus of informing society as a whole. This broader focus will inform decisionsOREGON STATE UNIVERSITYand policies that will lead to responsiblestewardship of environmental andsocial systems, locally and globally. Theuniversity’s long-standing connectionswith communities and institutions beyondcampus borders, with the StatewidePublic Services — OSU Extension Service,Agricultural Experiment Station and theForest Research Laboratory — and with ournational and international partners enhanceour ability to communicate our discoveryand research.10Strategic Plan ‑ 2014Advancing the Science of SustainableEarth EcosystemsOur economic and social well-being is increasinglydependent on the health of the Earth to provide food, shelterand energy. The challenges we face are at the intersectionof our cultures, our economy and our values, and they arecharacterized by complex linkages between global andlocal problems, their distributed and changing nature and ahigh level of uncertainty (e.g., climate change, biodiversity, marine ecology).Building on our strong and comprehensive foundation in earthand environmental sciences, Oregon State will create newand powerful bridges with public health, applied economics, public policy and the humanities. This new framework willrely on discovery-based learning and engagement and willset the stage for broader partnerships with other academicinstitutions and relevant organizations, both nationallyand globally. Our research will further enhance a rigorousapproach to prediction and scenario development of human/environmental systems by building from a sound theoreticaland observational basis.Strategic Plan ‑ 201411OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY

Improving Human Health and WellnessAs the population grows, ages and diversifies, pressureson health care and well-being locally and globally continueto mount. This is especially true for chronic diseases, which impact the quality of life of 90 million Americansand are responsible for 70 percent of all deaths. Manychronic diseases result from complex interactions betweeninfectious agents, people, animals and the environment.Identifying these relationships can improve health outcomesacross populations and create opportunities to reduce theimpact of chronic disease.in the life and environmental sciences, Oregon State scholarsaddress the health impacts of micronutrients, pollutantexposure and exercise, as well as the molecular mechanismsof diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS orLou Gehrig’s disease), cancer and cardiovascular diseases.Partnerships with social science and public policy programsaddress challenging and emerging public health andenvironmental health issues with significant local and globalimpact, and programs in the humanities shape individual andcollective responses to human disease, disability and socialand medical interventions. With strong programs in public health, science, pharmacyand veterinary medicine, along with related health researchOREGON STATE UNIVERSITYEssential to the PlanEnhancing DiversityEnhancing diversity, stewarding our resources and recognizingtechnology as a strategic asset are all essential to the success of thisstrategic plan.
