GENERAL INFORMATIONPHILOSOPHYTechnical education is a vital component of the total education of an individual. It is a rightof every individual who needs it, desires it, and can benefit from it. A continuous processwhich extends from childhood through adulthood, it is designed to develop work attitudes,saleable skills, and usable knowledge for employment and business ownership. It includesawareness and exploration of career choices and specialized training. There arevocational implications in all education, but technical education is best characterized by itspurposes and methods. One purpose is to provide economic benefit to the learner bypreparing him or her for employment or business ownership. Another purpose is to provideeconomic benefit to the community and the state by increasing productivity. TECHNICAL EDUCATION GUARANTEEIn collaboration with the Technical College System of Georgia and other technical colleges inthe state, Georgia Piedmont Technical College has established curriculum standards with directinvolvement of business and industry. These standards serve as the industry-validatedspecifications which allow Georgia’s 26 technical colleges to provide a Technical EducationGuarantee. The Technical Education Guarantee states that:“If a graduate from a standard program is deemed by an employer to bedeficient in one or more competencies as defined in the program standards,the technical college will retrain the employee at no instructional cost to theemployee or the employer.”The Technical Education Guarantee applies to any Georgia Piedmont Technical College graduatewho is employed in the field of his/her training and is in effect for a period of two years aftergraduation. Georgia Piedmont Technical College graduates or their employers who see a need toinquire or to file a claim under this Guarantee should submit to the Office of the Vice President ofAcademic Affairs a written request citing the graduate’s name, student identification number,program of study, and dates of attendance along with a description of the deficiency. The Office ofthe Vice President of Academic Affairs will review the claim and take appropriate action.HISTORY OF GEORGIA PIEDMONT TECHNICAL COLLEGEGeorgia Piedmont Technical College was established in 1961 as DeKalb Technical Institute.It was organized initially in cooperation with the Vocational Division of the State Departmentof Education as a part of the total educational program operated by the DeKalb County Boardof Education. DeKalb Technical Institute operated as a division and campus of DeKalbCollege (now Georgia Perimeter College) from 1972 to 1986, and as the postsecondary unitof DeKalb County School System until June 30, 1996. On July 1, 1996, DeKalb Tech beganoperating as a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia. In 2000, DeKalb TechnicalInstitute’s name was officially changed to DeKalb Technical College. To more accurately andappropriately reflect the College’s four-county service region, the name again officially changedin October, 2011 to Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Established to serve a multi-countyarea east of Atlanta, the College is one of a statewide network of area postsecondarytechnical colleges.The College enrolled its first class of 18 students in Electronics Technology in 1961. At thattime the College was in temporary quarters while the DeKalb Campus facility was underconstruction. The facility at 495 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, Georgia, was occupied onOctober 14, 1963 and consists of four buildings totaling 170,000 square feet of floor space.Construction of the Newton Campus was completed in August 1997 and consists ofapproximately 68,000 square feet of instructional space on 67 acres in the Covington/NewtonCounty Industrial Park. Programs and services are also offered in numerous other locationsthroughout the DeKalb, Newton, Rockdale, and Morgan counties, including the NewtonCampus Building D & Conference Center in Covington and the Community Education Centersin Doraville and Clarkston.Over 38 different occupations are included in the academic programs of Georgia PiedmontTechnical College. They include career programs in Business Information Systems, Health andProfessional Services, Industrial Technologies. and Public Safety and Security. Annualenrollment, including credit programs, continuing education, business and industry training, andAdult Education, exceeds 17,000 students.Georgia Piedmont Technical College provides technical education for citizens in DeKalb,Newton, Rockdale, and Morgan counties. These educational opportunities are offered throughcertificates, diplomas, and associate degree programs designed to prepare individuals forproductive and satisfying careers; technical instruction for employed persons who wish to3Georgia Piedmont Technical College

upgrade their knowledge and skills; technical instruction enabling persons to train in newoccupations when their previous technical skills become obsolete; and adult educationdesigned to assist persons in improving basic academic skills and in obtaining a high schoolequivalency certificate. The academic programs are provided conveniently in many locations.The faculty members of Georgia Piedmont Technical College are well qualified both inexperience and professional training in their specialty fields. There are more than 200 full-timemembers of the faculty and staff, and adjunct faculty number approximately 350 per semester.Georgia Piedmont Technical College operates year-round, offering programs throughout thethree semesters of the calendar.CAREER PLANNINGThe Admissions staff at Georgia Piedmont Technical College is available to assist prospectivestudents in planning an appropriate course of study. Each technical education program has established a description of entrylevel reading, language, and math competencies. The major purpose of Learning Support is toprovide learning experiences in reading, language, and math that will aid the student inmastering the skills needed for admission into the selected program of study. Assignment toLearning Support is based on the results of standardized tests and the competencies neededfor the prospective program of study.
