Hebrew 2IntroductionWelcome to Pimsleur’s Hebrew 2!Since Hebrew is written in the Hebrew alphabet,to read Hebrew you need to associate the soundswith a different system of symbols than the Latinalphabet. A complete listing of the Hebrew alphabetcan be found starting on page 3. This is for yourinformation only: you will not need the list to beable to read Hebrew since all of the instruction is onthe audio. In Hebrew you read from right to left, the oppositeof English. The first few pages in this booklet are inEnglish and should be read from left to right; however, the pages teaching Hebrew, starting with page 9,should be read from right to left.In Hebrew, the major vowel sounds are: ah, eh,ee, o, and oo. Some vowels are represented by morethan one sign. The reason for this is that in ancienttimes there were more vowel sounds than there aretoday, and the various forms of transcription havebeen maintained even when there is no sounddifference. And there is also a punctuation vowel, called schva, which is sometimes silent. There are twenty-two consonants in the Hebrewalphabet, written with thirty-one letters. As in the

Hebrew 2case of vowels, there are some letters which inHebrew sound alike, but which originally weredifferent sounds. This is especially true in the case ofsome guttural sounds which are no longer pronounced gutturally in Hebrew. There are two letters which are silent and serve asvowel carriers. There are two letters which have adifferent sound when a dot is added. There are fiveletters which have two forms: one form when writtenat the beginning or middle of the word, and anotherform when written at the end of the word. Havingdifferent letters for the same sound may causedifficulties in spelling, but not in reading.Hebrew script does not normally include vowelsand consonant dots, called dagesh chazak. Theseare only included for beginning readers, in poetry, and in the Hebrew Bible, and are otherwise usedonly when it is necessary to avoid ambiguities ofmeaning. As of the second grade in elementaryschool, Israelis are able to read without vowels, byguessing the correct pronunciation. In this booklet, the vowel and consonant dots are included, so youwon’t have to worry about guessing.2

Hebrew 2Reading LessonsReading is a critical part of learning andunderstanding a new language, but it may be fordifferent reasons than you think. If you’re like mostpeople, you learned to speak your native languagewell before you learned to read it. You learnedreading later, and it’s a different type of languageskill, which uses a different part of your brain. Thesymbols you see on a page—the alphabet—are asort of shorthand for the sounds they represent.Inside those sounds is where meaning actually lives. Not only is reading a piece of a language puzzle;learning to read also gives you a chance to learn alanguage from a different direction than the wayyou’re learning to speak in the audio lessons. Thiscombination approach will help you build a solidbridge toward fluency. In Level 1, you acquired the sounds of your newlanguage and learned about the impact that asymbol, an accent, or stress has on pronunciation. InLevel 2, you’ll continue to practice sounding outwords on sight and reading for meaning, at the sametime expanding your vocabulary. You’ll also continueto isolate sounds that run together in the spokenlanguage—sounds that you couldn’t quite catchthrough listening alone—and you’ll begin to noticepatterns in words that will help you create a mentalweb of understanding. This is the natural progression7

Hebrew 2that Dr. Pimsleur intended in all of his languagecourses. Translations are provided for each lesson, although we recommend that you look at thetranslations only after doing the lessons.Don’t be afraid to push yourself with yourpronunciation and accent. Be dramatic and have fun!The closer you can get to the native speaker’spronunciation, the more authentic your experiencewill be, and the more easily you’ll remember whatyou’ve learned.8
