AAA automotive researchers found that throughout4,000 miles of real-world driving, vehicles equippedwith active-driving assistance systems, which combineadaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance, experienced some type of issue every 8 miles, onaverage.Researchers noted instances of trouble with thesystems keeping the vehicles tested in their lane andcoming too close to other vehicles or guardrails. Theyalso found that these systems often disengage withlittle notice – almost instantly handing control back tothe driver. This can be a dangerous scenario if a driverhas become disengaged from the driving task or hasbecome too dependent on the system.“AAA has repeatedly found that active drivingassistance systems do not perform consistently, especially in real-word scenarios,” said Greg Brannon, director of automotive engineering and industryrelations. “Manufacturers need to work towardmore dependable technology, including improvinglane-keeping assistance and providing moreadequate alerts.”metamorworks / iStockActive-Driving Assistance SystemsNot Fool-Proofaggregate, a collision occurred 66% of the time andthe average impact speed was 25 mph.“Active-driving assistance systems are designed toassist the driver and help make the roads safer, but thefact is, these systems are in the early stages of theirdevelopment,” added Brannon. “With the number ofissues we experienced in testing, it is unclear how thesesystems enhance the driving experience in their currentform. In the long run, a bad experience with currenttechnology may set back public acceptance of morefully automated vehicles in the future.”Vehicle Test Results:Lack of Consumer Trust:AAA tested the functionality of active-driving assistancesystems in real-world conditions and in a closed-coursesetting to determine how well they responded tocommon driving scenarios.AAA’s 2020 automated vehicle survey found that onlyone in 10 drivers (12%) would trust riding in a self-drivingcar. To increase consumer confidence in future automatedvehicles, it is important that car manufacturers perfectfunctionality as much as possible – like active-drivingassistance systems available now – before deploymentin a larger fleet of vehicles.AAA has met with industry leaders to provide insightfrom the testing experience and recommendationsfor improvement. The insights also are shared withAAA members and the public to inform their drivingexperiences and vehicle purchase decisions. On public roadways, nearly three-quarters (73%) oferrors involved instances of lane departure or erraticlane position. AAA’s closed-course testing found that the systemsperformed mostly as expected, but were particularlychallenged when approaching a simulated disabledvehicle. When encountering this test scenario, inNew vehicle owners should follow this PLAN:Purpose — Learn the purposeof driving assistance technologyby requesting hands-on trainingat the dealership, reading thevehicle’s owners manual andvisiting the manufacturer’swebsite.Limitations — Do not makeany assumptions aboutwhat the technology canand cannot do. A drivingassistance system shouldnot be confused with aself-driving one.Allow time for practice— Allow time for safeon-road practice sodrivers know exactlyhow this technologyworks in real drivingsituations.Never rely on it — Do notrely on this technology;instead, act as if thevehicle does not haveit with the driver alwaysprepared to retakecontrol if needed.MAY 2022 11
