Cyclades - GreeceAthensThe Capital of Greece. Within the sprawlingcity of Athens it is easy to imagine the goldenage of Greece when Pericles had the Parthenon(the most eminent monument of the ancientGreek architecture) built. Athens is builtaround the Acropolis and the pinnacled crag ofMt. Lycabettus, which the goddess Athena wassaid to have dropped from the heavens as abulwark to defend the city. The suburbs havecovered the barren plain in all directions andthe city is packed with lively taverns andbustling shops.4

On thesouth side of Nikolaos Bay - which was a piratestronghold in the 13th c. - is the little port ofKorissia, built on the side of ancient Korissia.There are remains of the ancient town walls anda Sanctuary of Apollo. The famous lion - carvedfrom the native rock in the 6th c. BCE - can beseen just north-east of Kea town. Anotherhighlight is the beautiful anchorage of Poleis.Vourkari is a small bay with many traditionaltaverns, small shops and bars and is certainlyworth a visit.5

Cyclades - GreeceTinosThe “ handmade” island, as called by thephilosopher Kornilios Kostoriadis, is located inNorth Cyclades. It is famous, among religious,for its huge Church of Panagia (Virgin) whichhas a miraculous icon and is attractingthousands of pilgrims from all over the countryon the 15th of August, feast day of the Virgin.Its traditional cuisine and way of life attractmore tourists every year.6

A very active night-lifein combination with beautiful beaches andexcellent restaurants.Chora, as the town of Mykonos is commonlyknown, casts its spell on the visitor with itsbeautiful position, scale and architecture. Alittle further, on a low hill, the windmills,having stood for centuries, compose a picture ofunparalleled beauty in combination with reddomes and bell towers of the countlesschurches.The shores form gulfs that penetrate deeplyinto the lands. The most important gulfs arethe one of the Panormou and of Ornou.7

Cyclades - GreeceDelosThe sacred island of Delos was, in the myths,the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Todaythe island is uninhabited: it is a vastarchaeological site whose superb monumentsdraw thousands of visitors in pilgrimage towhat was, for a thousand years or so after theninth century BC the political and religiouscenter of the Aegean. The island bears traces ofthe succeeding civilizations in the Aegeanworld, from the 3rd millennium B.C. to thepalaeochristian era.8

Three bays cut deep inland - inthe west the sheltered Paroikia Bay, with theisland's capital that serves as the main sailingport. In the north the bay which shelters thelittle town of Naoussa, which in Roman timeswas the island's main port for the shipment ofLychnites marble; and in the east the flatMarmara bay.Paros is also known in Greece for its idealweather conditions for windsurfing.9

Ios is famous for its vividnightlife with an uncountable number of bars,cafés, clubs and restaurants and for its beacheswith crystal clear water. The little port of Ios,with the domed Church of Saint Irini (17th c.)lies in a sheltered bay on the west coast of theisland. One kilometre up the fertile KatoKampos Valley, conspicuously andpicturesquely situated on the hillside, is thechief place on the island.10

Its great wines, the internationaland local cuisine but most of all, the villageswhich are situated on cliffs and offerbreathtaking view over the submerged volcano.The island also has impressive beaches with thesand of your choice: black, red or white! Thiratogether with the smaller islands of Thirasiaand Aspro are part of a volcanic crater, whichhas been engulfed by the sea. In the center arethe Kammeni islands, the cones of latervolcanos, which came into being in historicaltimes. Hot springs and emissions of gas bearwitness to continuing volcanic activity.11

Cyclades - GreeceMilosA volcanic island with spectacular geologicaland rock formations and exceptional beacheswith turquoise waters. It has one of the bestharbors in the Mediterranean, formed when thesea broke into the crater through a gap on itsnorth-west side. Milos is famous about thecolor of the sea around the island, thetraditional local cuisine and its friendly people.Famous beaches of the island are Kleftiko &Sarakiniko.Kleftiko used to be an old hide-out for pirates.Today these geologic formations created by thewind and sea, are the perfect place forswimming and exploration. They are accessibleonly by sea.Sarakiniko is named after the Saracen pirates.The complex of these volcanic rocks is a magicallandscape and also a part to enjoy the sensationof the transparent waters and the sun.12

Cyclades - GreeceSifnosThe principal port on Sifnos is Kamares, whichis very well sheltered. From there, roads lead tothe must-see places along the coast. There arealso many beautiful anchorages and shouldreally be visited by boat. The medieval villageof Kastro - with remnants of its ancient walls but also the bays of Faros, Vathi and PlatisGialos are absolutely worth exploring:translucent turquoise water, combined withgood taverns. The best restaurants can be foundin Apollonia.13

Cyclades - GreeceSerifosSerifos is an island renowned for its excellentfood and relaxed atmosphere. Most of theanchorages in the south are now used by fishfarms. Moreover, apart from Livadi and theMonastery of the Taxiarchs in the north, thereis much to be seen. Its highest point is MountTourlos with 483 m. The island's main sourcesof income are its modest agriculture and itsopen-cast iron mines, which have been workedsince ancient times.14

Cyclades - GreeceKythnosAn unspoiled island. The coast is muchindented - with many beautiful anchorages andports - and for the most part falls steeply downto the sea. The two charming inland villages,Chora (Kythnos town) and the lively littleDryopis, can best be visited by scooter or bike.The two main ports are Merichas and Loutra.Merichas - only minutes sailing away from theoddly shaped Sandbar Bay - is the smaller of thetwo. Loutra on the north-east nowadays evenhas a new harbour providing the bestprotection from the Meltemi on the island.15
