April 3, 2022 — Sunday of Mary of EgyptBRETHREN, when Christ appeared as thehigh priest of the good things to come(Cf.Lv.16: 14; 19: 4), he entered once for allthrough the greater and more perfecttabernacle, not made by hands (that is, notas a part of the present creation), noragain by virtue of blood of goats andcalves, but by virtue of his own blood, intothe sanctuary, having obtained eternal reAlleluia:demption. For if the blood of goats andbulls and the sprinkled ashes of a heifersanctify the unclean for the cleansing ofthe flesh, how much more will the bloodof Christ (Cf. Rv. I: 5), who through theHoly Spirit offered himself unblemishedto God, cleanse your conscience from deadworks to serve the living God!Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord; let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.Stichon:Let us greet him with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.Gospel: “The Son of Man will be betrayed”, Mk 10:32-45At that time Jesus took the Twelve, and began to tell them what would happen tohim, saying, “Behold, we are going up toJerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the Scribes;and they will condemn him to death, andwill deliver him to the Gentiles; and theywill mock him, and spit upon him andscourge him, and put him to death; and onthe third day he will rise again.” AndJames and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him, saying, “Master, we wantthee to do for us whatever we ask.” But hesaid to them, “What do you want me to dofor you?” And they said, “Grant to us thatwe may sit, one at thy right hand and theother at thy left hand, in thy glory.” But Jesus said to them, with which I am to be baptized?” Andthey said to him, “We can.” And Jesus saidto them “Of the cup that I drink, you shalldrink; and with the baptism with which Iam to be baptized, you shall be baptized;but as for sitting at my right hand or at myleft, that is not mine to give, but it belongsto those for whom it has been prepared.”And when the ten heard this, they were atfirst indignant at James and John. But Jesus called them and said to them, “Youknow that those who are regarded asrulers among the Gentiles I lord it overthem, and their great men exercise authority over them. But it is not so among you.On the contrary, whoever wishes to become great shall be your servant; andwhoever wishes to be first among youshall be the slave of all; for the Son of Manalso has not come to be served but toserve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”“You do not know what you are askingfor. Saint Mary, Zozimos recalled, seemed to be “walking upon air.”Upon approaching this woman, she askedfor his blessing and told him of her life.stopped at the doorway by an invisibleforce. At this moment, her sinfulness wasrevealed to her and she made a promise tothe Mother of God that if she was permitted to enter the Church she would dedicate the rest of her life to God.After her dramatic conversion she withdrew to the desert where she spent the remaining years of her life in self-denial andrepentance. Towards the end of her life shemet the priestmonk Zozimos, whom shepetitioned to visit her on regular occasionsin order that she might be nourished withHoly Communion before she died.Saint Mary was born in Egypt in the sixthcentury and by the age of twelve had already dedicated her life to the pursuit ofdebauchery and excess. By her own admission, she spent the next seventeenyears of her life attempting to satisfy everycarnal appetite in any way possible. ‘Thisintention led her to seek passage on a boatbound for Jerusalem where, out of curiosity, she followed the crowds to the threshold of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. As she attempted to follow the crowd intothe Church, she wasMay the example of Saint Mary draw attention to our own need for repentance sothat we, too, nourished by Holy Communion, may rededicate our lives to the service of God.Text and cover-icon courtesy of Eastern Christian Bulletin ServicePO Box 3909 – Fairfax, VA 22038-3909www.ecbulletin.com – Ph: 703-691-8862 – Fax: 703-691-05135
