Applied ResearchOur students have the opportunity to embark on cross disciplinary applied research projectswith our faculty and industry partners in areas such as healthcare, urban farming, sustainableinfrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), and many others. Our cutting-edge projects, linked tolocal and overseas companies, attract significant government funding.Innovative Ankle Brace ProjectOne of our Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineeringstudents was given the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinaryteam to fabricate an innovative ankle brace prototype that willhelp those with foot and ankle injuries recover better. The teamcomprises SIT students and professors, as well as clinicians fromSingHealth and Duke NUS.04 Singapore Institute of Technology

An App Way to Reduce WasteTo reduce food wastage, our very own Mechanical Engineeringstudent and his teammate developed a prototype app thatenables users to keep tabs on their food expiration dates, and help them plan their meals better. Their app, Freshify, hasclinched the team a spot in the Top 15 finalists of the IKEASoutheast Asia’s Young Designer Award!Engineering 05

Machine Learning Enhances NetworkReliability at SubstationsElectricity powers nearly every aspect of our lives. You canimagine the inconvenience a blackout can cause to your dailylife. SIT researchers have collaborated with SP Group to developa machine learning platform that detects insulation failures toensure a more reliable electricity distribution grid for Singapore. The machine learning platform developed by SIT increasesefficiency by ten-fold, which allows SP engineers to focus onother pressing operational matters.06 Singapore Institute of Technology

Boosting Innovation in the Construction IndustrySIT launched the Construction Technology Innovation Laboratory (CTIL)in collaboration with construction and civil engineering company WohHup (Private) Limited to boost applied research efforts and developinnovative construction technologies for building structures and substructures. Our Civil Engineering students will gain practical hands-onexperience in industrial environments and be exposed to appliedresearch and innovation projects.Engineering 07

Tinkering with Disruptive TechnologiesBoston Dynamics, a US-based robotics company best knownfor its ‘Spot’ robot, will partner SIT and local startup dConstructTechnologies on learning and applied research of roboticssystems as they set up their base at the upcoming PunggolDigital District. Our students will be able to use the Spotrobot and dConstruct’s software programming tool to developrobotics solutions for the Punggol Digital District.Saving Water and Energy Through InnovationThawing frozen food under running water is wasteful andexpensive. In an innovation project, students are trained toexamine human behaviours and motivations of this practice andprovide a solution to the problem. For this project, studentscame up with innovative ideas working alongside industrypartners such as The Regent Singapore, paving the way for moreefficient water and energy saving practices.08 Singapore Institute of Technology
