Attention ActivityHow many names can you collect in5 seconds?

Attention Activity Do you think that more peoplecould be gathered if a secondperson were to help. Let’s try it again with a secondvolunteer.

Attention Activity How many people did onevolunteer gather? How many people did twovolunteers gather? How many people do you thinkcould be gathered if the whole classworked together?

Attention Activity After the Book ofMormon had beenprinted and the Churchwas organized, HeavenlyFather and Jesus Christwanted everyone to hearthe gospel and have theopportunity to become amember of the Church.

Attention Activity Let’s read Doctrine and Covenants133:37. 37 And this gospel shall bepreached unto every nation, andkindred, and tongue, and people.

Attention Activity This verse is part of a revelationgiven to Joseph Smith in 1831, theyear after the Church wasorganized.

Attention Activity To whom does the gospel need tobe preached? How long do you think it wouldtake for one person to teach thegospel to everyone on the earth?

Attention Activity Joseph Smith knew it would beimpossible for him to teach thegospel to everyone by himself. He needed others to help him.

Attention Activity Just as our two volunteers were ableto gather more names than onevolunteer was, more members ofthe Church working to share thegospel would be able to teach morepeople than Joseph alone couldteach.

This is what our lesson is abouttoday.

Samuel Smith wasJoseph Smith’syounger brother. Jesus wanted Samuel to go on amission. Samuel Smith was the first missionaryfor the Church.

Samuel went to teach people thegospel and tell them about the Bookof Mormon. On the first day hetraveled 25 miles, butpeople treated himunkindly and did notwant to listen.

When night came,Samuel stopped at aninn. He asked the owner ifhe would like to buy aBook of Mormon. The owner asked where Samuel got thebook. Samuel said his brother had translated itfrom gold plates.

The owner was angry. He said Samuel was lying and told himto get out of the inn.

Samuel Smith was discouraged. That night he slept under an appletree.

The next morning Samuel went to see JohnGreene, who was a leader of anotherchurch. Mr. Greene was notinterested in theBook of Mormon, buthe agreed to ask thepeople in his churchif they would like tobuy a copy.

When Samuel returned three weekslater, there had been no sales. However, Mr.Greene’s wife saidshe had read thebook.

Samuel Smith’s mission was hard. When he went home, he did not thinkhe had been successful.

Samuel did notknow at the timethat his workwould eventuallylead to manypeople joining theChurch, includingMr. and Mrs.Greene.

Samuel had alsosold a Book ofMormon to a mannamed PhineasYoung. Phineas read the book and gave it tohis brother, whose name was BrighamYoung.

Brigham Young readthe Book of Mormonand believed it wastrue. Phineas and Brigham Young told somefriends about the Book of Mormon, and they also read it and believed itwas true.

Later, Phineas and Brigham Young andtheir friends joined the Church.

Within a few years, Brigham Youngwas called to be an Apostle. Many years after that he became thePresident of the Church. He and others whowere convertedthrough the efforts ofSamuel Smith becamegreat leaders in theChurch.

Jesus wanted morepeople to hear aboutthe gospel. He wanted some of the Saints to go onmissions.

He called OliverCowdery to go on amission to theAmerican Indians. These Indians were also calledLamanites because some of them weredescended from the Lamanites in theBook of Mormon.

Jesus wanted the Lamanites to readthe Book of Mormon. He had promised many prophets thatthe Lamanites would have the Book ofMormon. Now it was time tokeep that promise.

The Book of Mormontells the Lamanitesabout their ancestorswho lived hundreds ofyears ago. It tells them about important promisesJesus made to them. It helps them believe in Jesus.

It teaches them torepent and be baptized.

Other men wantedto go with OliverCowdery to preachthe gospel to theLamanites. The Lord said three of the men couldgo.

First the missionaries went to sometribes in New York. The missionariesgave the people theBook of Mormon, but only a few ofthem could read.

Then the missionaries went to preachto some Lamanites in Ohio. These people werehappy to hear aboutthe Book of Mormonand learn about theirancestors.

The missionaries left Ohio and went toa town named Independence inJackson County, Missouri.

There were manyLamanites inMissouri. The missionaries preached the gospelto them and gave them the Book ofMormon. They were very happy and thanked themissionaries for the book.

Other people inMissouri did notbelieve the restoredgospel or the Bookof Mormon. They told the missionaries to stayaway from the Indians.

The people said soldiers would chasethe missionaries away if they did notleave. Saddened, themissionaries went toteach other people inMissouri.

One of the missionaries was namedParley P. Pratt. He went to Ohio to tell Joseph Smithwhat they had done. Parley said theirmission had beengood and they hadtaught the gospel tomany people.

Enrichment Activity 1 Each of you read the followingscripture from D & C 4:5-6. As you read, take notice of eachattribute name in these versus. 5 And faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single tothe glory of God, qualify him for the work. 6 Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, charity, humility, diligence.

Enrichment Activity 1 Let’s make a list on the Blackboard ofthe attributes that you just read about. Can you suggest ways youcan develop theseattributes? Let’s discuss how theseattributes will help makeyou a good missionary.

Enrichment Activity 2 Let’s act out thestory of SamuelSmith that we justheard a fewminutes Here are nametags to show whoyou are in thestory.

Enrichment Activity 3 Have you ever heard the expression “Gothe extra mile?” Let’s read Matthew 5:41: 41 And whosoever shall compel thee togo a mile, go with him twain.

Enrichment Activity 3 The background on this scripture is: The people in the Holy Land at the timeChrist was on the earth were ruled bythe Romans. A law allowed a Roman soldier passingthrough an area to demand that acivilian (a person not in the military)carry his baggage for one mile.

Enrichment Activity 3 In his Sermon on the Mount, Christtold his listeners that they should bewilling to carry the baggage a secondmile even though the soldiers could notdemand it of them. The first mile was required of them, butthe second was a generous and kindservice they could give.

Enrichment Activity 3 As we serve Heavenly Father andJesus Christ with all our heart, might, mind, and strength, we often need to“go the extra mile.”

Enrichment Activity 3 Let’s discuss the difference of “goingthe extra mile” and “doing what weare expected to do”

Enrichment Activity 3 After you clean up your yard, you noticeyour neighbors’ yard has not beencleaned.

Enrichment Activity 3 You are asked to take care of youryounger sister for a while.

Enrichment Activity 3 Your brother with whom you share aroom had to leave early to go to anactivity; after you wake up andstraighten your bed, you notice yourbrother’s bed is not made.

Enrichment Activity 3 Your mother asks you to put your shoesaway, and you notice your sister’s coaton a chair.

Enrichment Activity 3 During this coming week, try to keepyour eyes and ears open for “extra mile”activities you can do. Discuss these activities with yourfamilies and encourage them to do the

Enrichment Activity 4 We set up some dominos here. What do you think will happen if wetip over the first domino?

Enrichment Activity 4 Watch the chain reaction caused whenwe knock over the first domino. We too may affect the lives of others ina chain reaction.

Enrichment Activity 4 By sharing the gospel with even oneperson, we sometimes touch the livesof many others. Remember how Samuel Smith sold aBook of Mormon to Phineas Young, who gave it to his brother Brigham, who passed it on yet again.

Enrichment Activity 4 Samuel Smith’s small action of sellingone Book of Mormon affected manypeople.

Enrichment Activity 4 By developing the qualities andattributes listed in Doctrine andCovenants 4, we can be an example tomany others and interest them in theChurch.

Enrichment Activity 5 Do any of you have examples of peopleyou know, such as Church Leaders, family members, or missionaries, whoserve God with all their heart, might, mind and strength that you would liketo share with the class?

Enrichment Activity 5 We should serve others and obey thecommandments with the same kind ofdedication, hard work, and effort.

Enrichment Activity 6 6. Let’s try to memorize: Doctrine and Covenants 14:7 7 And, if you keep my commandmentsand endure to the end you shall haveeternal life, which gift is the greatest ofall the gifts of God.

Enrichment Activity 6 6. Let’s try to memorize: Doctrine and Covenants 4:2. 2 Therefore, O ye that embark in the service ofGod, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may standblameless before God at the last day.

TESTIMONY I am grateful for the efforts andexample of the missionaries of theChurch. I want to encourage you to strive todevelop the attributes needed toserve.
