Academic RegaliaAcademic ceremonies with gowns, mortarboards, tassels, hoods, and maces are traditions handed downfrom European universities of the Middle Ages. These first organized institutions of learning originatedduring the 12th and 13th centuries, generally under the jurisdiction of the church. Robes, hoods, andcaps were worn mainly for warmth in unheated buildings by the clerics, monks, and priests who werethe first students.European universities continue to show great diversity in their academic dress. In the United States, asthe result of our English heritage, caps and gowns have been used since colonial times by the facultiesof some universities and became generally standardized about 1895.Today, the traditional commencement ceremony celebrates the success of our Riverside City Collegestudents who are completing, or will complete, an Associate’s degree or certificate program. The degreeor certificate is awarded once all requirements have been verified. Graduates may receive “honors atcommencement” based on a cumulative grade point average from all accredited institutions. Graduateswearing gold tassels have received Distinction*, with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 or higher.Graduates wearing a gold cord have received Great Distinction**, with a cumulative GPA of at least3.70 or higher. Spring 2020 is not included in the calculation of “honors at commencement.” Colorfulprogram sashes and stoles indicate the graduate’s successful participation in a college program.Commencement regalia for the Masters’ and Doctoral degrees add a hood, with a velvet facing. Thecolor of the velvet facing, indicates the program of study of that degree holder.Maize. AgricultureWhite. Arts, Letters, HumanitiesDrab.Business AdministrationLilac. DentistryLight Blue. The lamp, mounted on three books, was etchedover the entrance of the Quadrangle by 1938. Although that arch disappeared during a later renovation, the south arch now bears a representation of the lamp, supported by the words: Wisdom is my Light.5

Riverside City College ASRCC PresidentShauna "Shay" KimHi Tigers! My name is Shay Kim, and I am so honored to have servedas president of Associated Student of Riverside City College. Beinga part of a student environment is essential which is why I decidedto join ASRCC.As student leaders, we have made cultivating an environment thatembraces coming together to build a better community not only atRCC, but also in the world around us. Love is underrated and nottalked about enough. We need to love others and their own backgrounds. Most of us have great memories of RCC, some on campus and others through virtualexperiences. My most memorable experience was being a member of the RCC MarchingTigers, enduring long rehearsals, and enjoying a sense of accomplishment with my fellowmembers after a show.Being ASRCC president shaped me into the person I am today. I was a completely differentperson as a student at Centennial High School. Today, I am confident and full of ambitionas I pursue my dream of working alongside top fashion designers as a buyer for top fashionbrands such as Louis Vuitton. As I transition to California State University, Long Beach to study fashion merchandising, Iwant to thank Professor Monique Greene. Our brief encounter provided direction on what Ishould do in my career. It definitely had a significant impact on my future. My advice to new and current students is, take it one-step at a time. Surround yourself withpeople who don’t make you question your worth! It’s okay to not have your career figured outright away. I promise you that joining a club or another student-led program that involves acommunity will make your RCC experience more enjoyable.7
