The Birth of John and Jesus ForetoldLuke 1:5-381:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certainpriest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had awife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 1:6They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in allthe commandments and ordinances of the Lord. 1:7 But they hadno child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were welladvanced in years. 1:8 Now it happened, while he executed thepriest’s office before God in the order of his division, 1:9according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter6

into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 1:10 The wholemultitude of the people were praying outside at the hour ofincense.1:11 An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the rightside of the altar of incense. 1:12 Zacharias was troubled when hesaw him, and fear fell upon him. 1:13 But the angel said to him,“Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call hisname John. 1:14 You will have joy and gladness; and many willrejoice at his birth. 1:15 For he will be great in the sight of theLord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filledwith the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 1:16 He willturn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God. 1:17 Hewill go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn thehearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to thewisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”1:18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For Iam an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”1:19 The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in thepresence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you thisgood news. 1:20 Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’tbelieve my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”1:21 The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveledthat he delayed in the temple. 1:22 When he came out, he couldnot speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision inthe temple. He continued making signs to them, and remainedmute. 1:23 It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled,he departed to his house. 1:24 After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying, 1:25 “Thus hasthe Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to takeaway my reproach among men.”7

1:26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from Godto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 1:27 to a virgin pledged to bemarried to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 1:28 Having come in, the angel saidto her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women!”1:29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. 1:30 Theangel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favorwith God. 1:31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bringforth a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ 1:32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God willgive him the throne of his father, David, 1:33 and he will reignover the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to hisKingdom.”1:34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am avirgin?”1:35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Thereforealso the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son ofGod. 1:36 Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived ason in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who wascalled barren. 1:37 For everything spoken by God is possible.”1:38 Mary said, “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to meaccording to your word.”8

The Birth of JesusLuke 2:1-202:1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out fromCaesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2:2 Thiswas the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor ofSyria. 2:3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 2:5 to enrollhimself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife,9

being pregnant.2:6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come thatshe should give birth. 2:7 She brought forth her firstborn son, andshe wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feedingtrough, because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8 Therewere shepherds in the same country staying in the field, andkeeping watch by night over their flock. 2:9 Behold, an angel ofthe Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone aroundthem, and they were terrified. 2:10 The angel said to them, “Don’tbe afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy whichwill be to all the people. 2:11 For there is born to you, this day, inthe city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12 This is thesign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lyingin a feeding trough.” 2:13 Suddenly, there was with the angel amultitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,2:14 “Glory to God in the highest,on earth peace, good will toward men.”2:15 It happened, when the angels went away from them into thesky, that the shepherds said one to another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord hasmade known to us.” 2:16 They came with haste, and found bothMary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.2:17 When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying whichwas spoken to them about this child. 2:18 All who heard itwondered at the things which were spoken to them by theshepherds. 2:19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering themin her heart. 2:20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praisingGod for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it wastold them.10

Jesus in the TempleLuke 2:41-522:41 His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of thePassover.2:42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalemaccording to the custom of the feast, 2:43 and when they hadfulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayedbehind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it, 2:4411

but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.2:45 When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him. 2:46 It happened after three days they found himin the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening tothem, and asking them questions. 2:47 All who heard him wereamazed at his understanding and his answers. 2:48 When they sawhim, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, whyhave you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I wereanxiously looking for you.”2:49 He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’tyou know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 2:50 Theydidn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them. 2:51 And hewent down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject tothem, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 2:52 AndJesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God andmen.12

John the BaptistMatthew 3:1-123:1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in thewilderness of Judea, saying, 3:2 “Repent, for the Kingdom ofHeaven is at hand!” 3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiahthe prophet, saying,“The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord.13

Make his paths straight.”3:4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with aleather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.3:5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the regionaround the Jordan went out to him. 3:6 They were baptized by himin the Jordan, confessing their sins. 3:7 But when he saw many ofthe Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said tothem, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from thewrath to come? 3:8 Therefore bring forth fruit worthy ofrepentance! 3:9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham forour father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children toAbraham from these stones.3:10 “Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Thereforeevery tree that doesn’t bring forth good fruit is cut down, and castinto the fire. 3:11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, buthe who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am notworthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. 3:12 Hiswinnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse histhreshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaffhe will burn up with unquenchable fire.”14

The Baptism of JesusMatthew 3:13-173:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to bebaptized by him. 3:14 But John would have hindered him, saying,“I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”3:15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this isthe fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then heallowed him. 3:16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directlyfrom the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He15

saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.3:17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my belovedSon, with whom I am well pleased.”16

The Sermon on the MountMatthew 5 – 75:1 Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When hehad sat down, his disciples came to him. 5:2 He opened his mouthand taught them, saying,5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom ofHeaven.5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5:5 Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst afterrighteousness, for they shall be filled.17

5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be calledchildren of God.5:10 Blessed are those who have been persecuted forrighteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.5:11 “Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecuteyou, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.5:12 Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your rewardin heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets whowere before you.5:13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost itsflavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. 5:14 Youare the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t behidden. 5:15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under ameasuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who arein the house. 5:16 Even so, let your light shine before men; thatthey may see your good works, and glorify your Father who isin heaven.5:17 “Don’t think that I came to destroy the law or theprophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. 5:18 For mostcertainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not evenone smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way passaway from the law, until all things are accomplished. 5:19Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these leastcommandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least18

in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teachthem shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 5:20 ForI tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of thescribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into theKingdom of Heaven.5:21 “You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, ‘Youshall not murder;’ and ‘Whoever shall murder shall be indanger of the judgment.’ 5:22 But I tell you, that everyone whois angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger ofthe judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, ‘Raca!’shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, ‘Youfool!’ shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.5:23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, andthere remember that your brother has anything against you,5:24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offeryour gift. 5:25 Agree with your adversary quickly, while youare with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliveryou to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, andyou be cast into prison. 5:26 Most certainly I tell you, you shallby no means get out of there, until you have paid the lastpenny.5:27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commitadultery;’ 5:28 but I tell you that everyone who gazes at awoman to lust after her has committed adultery with heralready in his heart. 5:29 If your right eye causes you tostumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it ismore profitable for you that one of your members shouldperish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. 5:30If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throwit away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one ofyour members should perish, than for your whole body to becast into Gehenna.19

5:31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever shall put away his wife, lethim give her a writing of divorce,’ 5:32 but I tell you thatwhoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexualimmorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries herwhen she is put away commits adultery.5:33 “Again you have heard that it was said to them of oldtime, ‘You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to theLord your vows,’ 5:34 but I tell you, don’t swear at all: neitherby heaven, for it is the throne of God; 5:35 nor by the earth, forit is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the cityof the great King. 5:36 Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black. 5:37 But let your‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Whatever is more thanthese is of the evil one.5:38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and atooth for a tooth.’ 5:39 But I tell you, don’t resist him who isevil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to himthe other also. 5:40 If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. 5:41 Whoever compels you to goone mile, go with him two. 5:42 Give to him who asks you, anddon’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you.5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love yourneighbor, and hate your enemy.’ 5:44 But I tell you, love yourenemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hateyou, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,5:45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendsrain on the just and the unjust. 5:46 For if you love those wholove you, what reward do you have? Don’t even the taxcollectors do the same? 5:47 If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don’t even the tax collectorsdo the same? 5:48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as yourFather in heaven is perfect.20

6:1 “Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving beforemen, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from yourFather who is in heaven. 6:2 Therefore when you do mercifuldeeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocritesdo in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get gloryfrom men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received theirreward. 6:3 But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your lefthand know what your right hand does, 6:4 so that yourmerciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees insecret will reward you openly.6:5 “When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, forthey love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in thecorners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Mostcertainly, I tell you, they have received their reward. 6:6 Butyou, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and havingshut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and yourFather who sees in secret will reward you openly. 6:7 Inpraying, don’t use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for theythink that they will be heard for their much speaking. 6:8Therefore don’t be like them, for your Father knows whatthings you need, before you ask him. 6:9 Pray like this: ‘OurFather in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 6:10 Let yourKingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so onearth. 6:11 Give us today our daily bread. 6:12 Forgive us ourdebts, as we also forgive our debtors. 6:13 Bring us not intotemptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is theKingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’6:14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenlyFather will also forgive you. 6:15 But if you don’t forgive mentheir trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yourtrespasses.6:16 “Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may beseen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have21

received their reward. 6:17 But you, when you fast, anoint yourhead, and wash your face; 6:18 so that you are not seen by mento be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and yourFather, who sees in secret, will reward you.6:19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, wheremoth and rust consume, and where thieves break through andsteal; 6:20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, whereneither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t breakthrough and steal; 6:21 for where your treasure is, there yourheart will be also.6:22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye issound, your whole body will be full of light. 6:23 But if youreye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If thereforethe light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate theone and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one anddespise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.6:25 Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: whatyou will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the bodymore than clothing? 6:26 See the birds of the sky, that theydon’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Yourheavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more valuethan they?6:27 “Which of you, by being anxious, can add one moment tohis lifespan? 6:28 Why are you anxious about clothing?Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin, 6:29 yet I tell you that even Solomon in allhis glory was not dressed like one of these. 6:30 But if God soclothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrowis thrown into the oven, won’t he much more clothe you, you oflittle faith?22

6:31 “Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’,‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ 6:32For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenlyFather knows that you need all these things. 6:33 But seek firstGod’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things willbe given to you as well. 6:34 Therefore don’t be anxious fortomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’sown evil is sufficient.7:1 “Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. 7:2 For withwhatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and withwhatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you. 7:3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, butdon’t consider the beam that is in your own eye? 7:4 Or howwill you tell your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from youreye;’ and behold, the beam is in your own eye? 7:5 Youhypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, andthen you can see clearly to remove the speck out of yourbrother’s eye.7:6 “Don’t give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throwyour pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample themunder their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.7:7 “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find.Knock, and it will be opened for you. 7:8 For everyone whoasks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will beopened. 7:9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son askshim for bread, will give him a stone? 7:10 Or if he asks for afish, who will give him a serpent? 7:11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much morewill your Father who is in heaven give good things to those whoask him! 7:12 Therefore whatever you desire for men to do toyou, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and theprophets.23

7:13 “Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate andbroad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are thosewho enter in by it. 7:14 How narrow is the gate, and restrictedis the way
