Fall2020NewsletterWinter2020NewsletterIdeas to Ponder3 W’s: Communicating Safety inBullet PointsBy Mike Pinto, Principal at James Cole Elementary, IPLI Cohort 8 MentorWhen school begins this year, all school officials will be offering messagesthat will promote student and staff safety. It is important when communicatingto remember that simple and concise messages stick. Following the rule thatcommunication should be in “Billboards or Bullet Points” will help youcommunicate in this simple, concise way. Billboard messages are short,attention-grabbing, and easy to read as you travel down the interstate at 65miles per hour. Bullet Points offer the reader’s eyes something to land uponwith simple, digestible morsels that can be easily read and remembered. One such “Billboard Message” I plan to use are the 3 W’s: Wear a MaskWash Your HandsWatch Your DistanceEasy to remember. Rolls off the tongue. Can be seen and understood while walking quickly in the hallway orremembered over the announcements. Think “Billboards” and “Bullet Points” this school year with yourmessaging. Remember as well to practice the 3 W’s. Stay safe.Indiana Principal Leadership Institute401 N 7th Street, UH 213Terre Haute, IN 47809(812) 237-2932www.indianapli.orgPage 4Kelly Andrews, IPLI DirectorLori Davis, IPLI Program Coordinator

Fall2020NewsletterWinter2020NewsletterIdeas to Ponder (Continued)Connecting with Students & FamiliesBy Leigh Barnes, Principal at John Simatovich Elementary, IPLI Cohort 8 MentorAs servant leaders, we all realize the importance and value ofthe events we hold at the beginning of each year to welcomestudents and families back. These annual events at ourelementary school may include our new student welcoming, open house nights, kindergarten and 1st-grade family meet andgreets, a Boo-hoo/Ya-hoo Breakfast for our kindergartenparents, and a community ice-cream social. This year, these traditional back-to-school events have been canceled to limit building access to studentsand staff according to our re-entry plan. Without these events, how will we connect with our families andstudents at the beginning of this school year to build relationships, connections, and partnerships? Our intentis to still provide opportunities for students and families to feel welcome, connected, and more at ease as wetransition into a new school year. Here are some of theideas we are thinking about: Virtual tours of classroomsTeacher and staff introductions through Seesaw orFlipgridBitmoji classroom and teacher welcome slidesDaily virtual news videosPrincipal tours of main areas in the building withprocedures presented throughout the videoPic collages with teacher pictures (see photo on theright). Our weekly communications with our families take littletime and go a long way! Below is an example from oneof my weekly newsletters, “We are confident in that WEwill TEACH your children toprepare them for exactlywhat they need to be successful at the next grade level, LOVE on them to makethem feel special and important here at JSE, and INSPIRE them to growconfidently both socially and emotionally.”These are a few of the ideas we plan to expand on as we begin our new year. Please share your ideas with other IPLI family members by sending them toIPLI’s new director, Kelly Andrews, at kelly.andrews@indstate.edu.Page 5Happy New School Year!
