Wild Rice HarvestThis is Cobweb the Cat.184185

In the fall, we sat by a campfireon the shores of Finger Lake. Dadcarved an old stick.Dad told us that there were rice bedsnot far from the campsite. He hadharvested wild rice there as a boy.We had never harvested wild ricebefore, so we asked him to tell usmore. This is what he told us.186187

Wild rice is a kind of grass seed. The seed is long and black. It ripensin the fall. The wild rice plant lives in lakesand ponds.Ducks feed on the seed. Muskratsand deer enjoy the entire plant. The plant likes full sun and rich, moist soil.188189

Wild rice is gathered by hand, andthe best time to gather it is in the fall. The ripe rice falls off the plant whenyou tap it.It takes a while to gather even asmall bit of rice.190191

After the harvest, the rice must beprepared. Here are the steps:Cure the rice.Put the rice on a sheet. Let the sundry it.192Thresh the rice.Dig a small pit and line it with thesheet. Put the rice into the pit andstep on it. The chaff (the thin shellof the rice) will fall off.193

Store the rice.Put it in jars or bags and it will keepa long time. If it is kept dry, the ricewill not spoil.Toss the rice. The chaff will f ly off in the wind. The wild rice will fall back into thepan.194195
