ANGULAR CONTACT BEARINGS

ANGULAR CONTACT BEARINGSAngular Contact Bearing DesignAngular contact bearings have one ring shoulderremoved, this may be from the inner or outerring. This allows a larger ball complement thanfound in comparable deep groove bearings, givinga greater load capacity. Speed capacity of angularcontact bearings is also greater than deep groove.Barden angular contact bearings have anominal contact angle ranging from 10 to 25 .They can be used in pre-loaded duplex sets, backto back (DB) or face to face (DF) for supportingthrust loads in both directions or in tandem (DT)for additional capacity.Contact angles are obtained by assemblingthe bearings to the appropriate radial play values. The smaller contact angles give better radialcapacity and rigidity while the higher contactangles give higher axial capacity and rigidity.Angular contact bearings support thrust loadsor combinations of radial and thrust loading. Theycan not accept radial loads alone — a thrust loadof sufficient magnitude must be applied. A singleangular contact bearing can be loaded in onethrust direction only, this may be an operatingload or pre-load.Barden · 36Separable and non-separable types are availablewithin the category of angular contact bearings.Separable bearings are useful where bearingsmust be installed in blind holes or where press fitsare required on the shaft and in the housing. Theseparable feature also permits dynamic balancing ofthe rotating components with the inner ring mountedin place without the outer ring and housing. In Barden miniature and instrument angularcontact bearings (types B and H), machinedphenolic cages with high speed capability arestandard. These cages are outer ring land guided, which allows lubricant access to the most desiredpoint at the ring and ball contact area. Centrifugalforce carries lubricant outwards during operationto reach the other areas of need. For larger spindle and turbine series B types, phenolic cages are also standard, but H typesare normally supplied with bronze cages ofvarious designs. In separable bearings the B type cages havestepped ball pockets to retain the balls when theinner ring is removed.Consult Barden engineering for questionsregarding additional cage considerations, or referto cage discussion in the engineering section. Barden angular contact bearings have a nominal contact angle ranging from 10 to 25 . They can be used in pre-loaded duplex sets, back to back (DB) or face to face (DF) for supporting thrust loads in both directions or in tandem (DT) for additional capacity. Contact angles are obtained by assembling the bearings to the appropriate radial play .
