Otherfood eaten during the day should not add up to a fullmeal. Abstinence means not eating meat (see “Fast &Abstinence,” usccb.org). Bonus: c) The cross, a richsymbol in the Catholic faith, carries many levels ofmeaning. Historians describe how slave masters insome cultures in biblical times marked the foreheads of slaves as a sign of ownership. The markof the cross on Catholic’s foreheads reminds thefaithful that they belong to Christ, “who loved themand gave himself up for them” (Galatians 2:20).4. d) “Abstaining from meat and other indulgencesduring Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays ofLent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on GoodFriday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice throughabstinence and prayer”3. b) In biblical times, people doing penance wouldfast, wear sackcloth, sit in dust and ashes, tear theirgarments, and put dust and ashes on their heads (see2 Samuel 13:19).2. a) In anticipation of the Lenten disciplines of fastingand abstinence, there are people who indulge in feasting and revelry on Fat Tuesday, also known as Carnival.1. True. Because ashes are a sacramental and not asacrament, non-Catholics are free to receive them asthey might receive any blessing from a sacramental.
