In 1908, Anna Jarviscreated the American Incarnation of the special occasion, fast forward to 1914; it becamean official holiday in the United States every second Sunday of May.The concept of Mother’s Day celebration can be backtracked to the time of the ancient Romans and Greeks.Part of their culture was to organize festivals to honor Rhea and Cybele who are their mother goddessesrespectively. However, the type of Mother’s Day that we celebrate today is more heavily derived byMothering Sunday, which is an old Christian Festival.Mothering Sunday is a religious activity and a major tradition in some European towns and countries, especially in the United Kingdom. The event was held in Lent’s fourth Sunday. Originally, it was considered asa period when Christians would revisit their main church (mother church) in their hometown and attend aspecial service. As the years and decades went by, Mothering Sunday became more of a secular holiday thana religious tradition. It faded as a major custom and was eventually overshadowed by the Americanincarnation of Mother’s Day between the 1930s and 1940s.
