NAEC NEWSNAEC Honors Ricia Sturgeon-Hendrick WithLifetime Honorary MembershipIt was with great honor and pleasure to announce NAEC’snewest lifetime Honorary member, Ricia SturgeonHendrick, at the 70th Annual Convention & 2019 Expo inGrand Rapids.She is not only actively involved with NAEC and NEII, butalso with the Canadian Elevator Contractors Association(CECA), the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF),and the American Society of Professional and ExecutiveWomen. In 2002, NAEC presented her with the William C.Sturgeon Distinguished Service Award, considered the VTindustry’s highest honor.Prior to formally receiving her lifetime Honorarymembership with NAEC in September, Ricia enjoyeda surprise visit from NAEC Executive Director Alesa G.McArthur, Deputy Director Teresa Witham, and DougWitham of Vantage, in July, to receive the news. Ricia’sson, T. Bruce MacKinnon and EESF’s Laurie Duiett joinedin the celebration.As the daughter of Elevator World, Inc. founder William C.Sturgeon, Ricia is no stranger to the vertical transportation(VT) industry. After wearing several hats at ElevatorWorld, she currently serves as Editor-at-Large at theirheadquarters in Mobile, Alabama, making an impressivemark with her efforts to advance VT education to createa safer world for both the industry and riding public. Heraccomplishments include collaborating with the NAECEducation Committee to develop a national certificationprogram for elevator technicians and accessibility/privateresidence lift technicians and serving as publisher for 25CET and CAT training manuals for both programs. Shewas also responsible for the acquisition/development ofmore than 100 educational products for the internationalVT industry, and has been a partner with the NEII FieldSafety Committee in editing and publishing 13 editions ofthe Elevator Industry Field Employees’ Safety Handbooksince 1976.L to R: T. In additionto hosting the committee meeting, Robert Schaeffer,President of D&D Elevator, lead a tour of the LearningCenter, including the modules and set-up the classrooms.We appreciate the hospitality shown by D&D.Interlift 2019With 577 exhibitors and over 21,000 guests, Interlift2019 received top marks as the largest Interliftevent so far. Visitors from 108 countries gathered inAugsburg, Germany, to learn of the latest innovationsin the elevator sector.NAEC was well represented this year! MEMBER SPOTLIGHTPEELLE COMPANYI n the late 1800’s, Peelle’s founder, Caleb Peelle,traveled to New York City from Indiana to sell elevatorsafety gates as a manufacturer’s representative for theRichmond Safety Gates Company, a company Peellewould later purchase. When New York City experienced aconstruction boom in the beginning of the 20th Century,Caleb identified a new market and developed the verticalbiparting door to protect elevator hoistways whichearned the first of over 200 patents Peelle would claimto their name.Peelle later began to manufacture Cart/Tote Lifts, SwingDoors, Pass through Windows, Special Purpose Doors(nuclear shielding, blast, aircraft hangar, etc.) as wellas the Sedgwick brand of Dumbwaiters and ResidenceElevators.Across the globe, Peelle is known for premium, qualitydesign and manufacture of special freight elevatorentrance doors. During Peelle’s 114 year history, theyhave been involved in numerous special and significantprojects, most notably The White House, The US Capitol,The Pentagon, and the original and newly constructedWorld Trade Center.Peelle doors can be found on every continent. Specialtyexport projects include the Paris Opera House, ShanghaiTowers, and Petronas Towers.
