What does smokefree mean?The hospital plans to become smokefree.This means smoking will not be allowed inany areas inside and outside of the hospital.If you smoke on the grounds you will beasked to stop by staff.Why is the Trust planning to go smokefree?Making sure that NHS services aresmokefree helps the health of people whouse hospital services and the health of thepeople who work there.Smoking causes health problems and youhave a bigger risk of dying at a younger age.3

Stopping smoking and your healthWhen you stop smoking your body starts to get better straight away.after20minutesafter8 hoursYour blood pressure and heart rate return tonormal.Your chance of having a heart attack is less. Yourbody is half as much nicotine and carbonmonoxide. (Nicotine is the chemical in tobaccothat makes it hard to stop smoking. Carbonmonoxide is one of the bad chemicals in yourbody because of smoking.)after1 dayYour lungs start to get cleaner.afterYour body has no nicotine left.2 daysafter3 daysYour senses of taste and smell are better.You can breathe more easily.You have more energy.after3-9monthsafter5 yearsafter10 yearsYour lungs are working better.You stop coughing.You only have half the change of having a heartattack compared with a smoker.Your chance of getting lung cancer is half that ofa smoker.Your chance of having a heart attack is the sameas someone who has never smoked.4

Stopping smoking will save you money.People who smoke 20 cigarettes a day willsave about 2500 per year.What smokefree means for patients, carers, staff andvisitors?When you are visiting someone in hospital donot bring tobacco or lighters to the ward.Smoking cigarettes or tobacco will not beallowed in any buildings, areas or groundsused by the hospital.This means patients, carers, staff and visitorsmust not smoke on the hospital grounds.5

What smokefree means if you use our services in thecommunityIf NHS staff come to see you at home theremust be a smokefree area where you canmeet.NHS staff or your GP can give you informationabout where you can get help to quit smoking.You can contact your local stop smokingservice for support. The contact details are atthe end of this leaflet.6

What smokefree means if you are admitted to hospitalIf you are in hospital the NHS can give younicotine replacement products to help withthe cravings for a cigarette.Nicotine replacement products may bepatches, gum, lozenges and inhalators.NHS staff can help and support you if you aretempted to have a smoke.If you take certain medication your doctor orpharmacist will talk to you about goingsmokefree to make sure you stay well.7

Electronic cigarettes (E-cigs)Certain types of e-cigs (like the one picturedhere) can be used on Trust sites, but only byservice users in outdoor spaces.If you would like to use an e-cig it must bedisposablenon-refillableand non-rechargeable.Other types of e-cig are not allowed to be usedanywhere on Trust sites.E-cigs are not yet licensed as a medicine, sothe Trust cannot prescribe them. If you wouldlike to use an e-cig you will need to buy yourown.E-cigs are not allowed within our ForensicServices.8
