ALUMNISPOTLIGHTEvan Hill (SAB ‘06), a journalist on TheNew York Times’s visual investigationsteam, came to AUC as a study-abroadstudent from Northwestern University.Hill’s Arabic was critical to a story thatwon a Pulitzer Prize for InternationalReporting.I had previously studied Arabic at SOAS in London, but nothing cancompare to the cultural and linguistic immersion that you achieve byliving in an Arabic-speaking country. I made life-long friends through thisprogram and saw a phenomenal increase in my fluency. My time in Egyptand at AUC was incredible, and I would recommend the ALI program toanyone who wants to learn Arabic.Lara Keogh (ALI ‘20), IrelandFor people in the Middle East, and Egypt in particular, being friendly and polite is taken for granted. You walkdown the street here and exchange more niceties in amorning than you do in a year in other places.Ben Wedeman (YAB ’81)Senior International Correspondent, CNNI never knew before I could learn a foreign language with such an ease. The ALIN program, which I joined in September 2018, provided me withwell-trained, well-experienced professors. One of the unique differences thatI experienced is that the program offered me the opportunity to connect withthe students of other programs of Arabic language learning, allowing me toexpand my network and also learn from the professors in person. The Egyptian Culture on Film course has immensely cultivated my Arabiclanguage and revived it in ways that I did not expect. The methods usedby Professor Ola Hashad made me enjoy learning the language evenmore. That basically happened through her versatile techniques andmethods, and for that I am beyond gratefulReem BayoumyUndergraduate StudentNisha Prabhu Dayal (ALI ‘20), India1516
