This guide introducesyou to a few tips and tricks that will be helpful in makingyour first time canoe or kayak trip even more enjoyable.Take a moment and review the next few pages and thenget ready to float your boat on the beautiful Blue River,Indiana’s first designated scenic river.
Which Trip IsRecommended forFirst Time Guests?If you are a first time visitor, werecommend our most popular 7 mile,or half-day trip. This trip is great forbeginners and offers easy paddlingwith a few riffels and small rapids forexcitement.This trip is perfect for a leisurely floatwith friends or a great play and exploreday with kids.The half-day trip requires a short busride up stream to our private location forlaunching. Once in the water, paddle atyour leisure 7 miles back to our base.How long will the half-day trip take?Completion times vary depending onwater levels and your personal pace! Youshould plan for a minimumof 2 hoursand expect 4-5 hours.We incourage you to bring picnic supplieswith plenty of water, snacks and sunscreento best enjoy your day on the river! Half-day trips departabout every 40 minutesbeginning at 8:45, lasttrip leaves at 3:00 Bring picnic supplies No glass containers orstyrofoam Waterproof everything Don’t forget sunscreen
What to ExpectUpon arrival, check in at our base inMilltown. We’ll make sure your waiversare complete, offer you a river map andanswer any questions you may have.We’ll also inform you of current riverconditions and the specifics of tripdepartures.Modern restroom facilities are justacross from our river store. The store hasprovisions for most anything you needon your trip, including waterproof bagsfor phones and straps for sunglasses.After check-in you’ll proceed throughthe store to the paddle room. Hereyou’ll watch a short pre-trip safetyvideo. First timers will learn paddlingtips and tricks for your adventure.Our staff will assist you with your PFD(personal floatation device) and paddleselection. You will also receive a meshtrashbag for litter. Plan to arrive at least20 minutes before tripdeparture Dogs are allowed onthe river but pleasekeep them on aleash for the comfortand safety of all ourpaddlers
Ready to Rock and RowBoard the bus with your paddle, PFD,and cooler. We will take you to thelaunch site where your boat will bewaiting.Our staff will assist you in launchingyour canoe or kayak. You simply paddleat your own pace back to our base andyour parked car.Guests may fish, swim, and picnicalong the way. Stay within the banksof the river or on the islands and gravelbars as the property along the river isprivately owned.Blue River is Indiana’s first scenic river.Expect to see wildlife including turtles,otters, eagles and even deer. You’ll see andexperience lotsof photo worthyscenes, so share yourphotos with us at#cavecountrycanoes Be certain to keep yourphone or camera in awater tight case Please respect therights of land ownersalong the river. Usethe trash bags anddon’t litter.
Tips for a great trip. Plan to get wet! Wear shoes (not flip flops) that willprotect your feet from sharp rocks. Leave a towel and change of clothes inyour car for your return. Waterproof everything! All too oftenphones, keys and wallets don’t make itback from the trip. We rent lockers for phones and keys.If you must take them with you, makesure they are in water proof containersand secured to boat or person. We offer several waterproof solutions inour store. Bring along coolers with snacks and drinks. Dont forget the sunscreen andsunglasses! The river reflects the sun.Sunburns can be a real pain and ruinthe end to a wonderful day. Bring your friends andfamily. The more themerrier. We are open rain orshine. You can checkweather and riverconditions on ourwebsite. Consider renting alocker to keep yourkeys and wallet inwhile you float.
