Empower Learning with Big Ideas MathDesigned to the Common Core State Standards, the Big Ideas Math Middle School program is a robust and research-based program that uses theStandards for Mathematical Practice as its foundation. It ensures that studentsnot only grasp key mathematical concepts, but enjoy making connectionsbetween concepts and the world around them.Create Confident Learners With: Dynamic Technology for the 21st-Century Classroom Complete Support for Teachers in Lesson Planning and Lesson Presentation Dynamic Assessment System Research-Based Content and Delivery Rigorous, Focused, and Coherent Curriculum Balanced Approach to Instruction Continuous Preparation forHigh-Stakes Assessment Embedded RTI, DifferentiatedInstruction, and ELL SupportCANIS LUPUSGray WolfCOVER: The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) is the largest member of the dog family.Adaptable gray wolves are by far the most common and were once found all overthe Northern Hemisphere. In the lower 48 states, gray wolves were hunted to nearextinction, though some populations survived and others have since beenreintroduced. Few gray wolves survive in Europe, though many live in Alaska,Canada, and mals/g/gray-wolf/PHOTO CREDIT: Zocha K / iStock by Getty Images

Expert AuthorsThe Big Ideas Math authors are dedicated to fostering curiosity andconfidence in learners.Dr. Larson and Dr. Boswell began writing togetherin 1992. Since that time, they have authored overthree dozen textbooks. In their collaboration, Ron isprimarily responsible for the Student Edition whileLaurie is primarily responsible for the Teaching Edition.Ron Larson, Ph.D., is well known asthe lead author of a comprehensiveprogram for mathematics thatspans middle school, high school, and college courses. He holds thedistinction of Professor Emeritusfrom Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, wherehe taught for nearly 40 years. He received his Ph.D.in mathematics from the University of Colorado.Dr. Larson’s numerous professional activities keephim actively involved in the mathematics educationcommunity and allow him to fully understandthe needs of students, teachers, supervisors, andadministrators. We created Big Ideas Math becausewe recognized the need for a trulybalanced approach to learning, using discovery learning andscaffolded instruction.—Ron Larson, Ph.D.Big Ideas Math encouragesproductive struggle. It’s not aboutbeing hard. The entire programis accessible for all students.Laurie Boswell, Ed.D., is the formerHead of School at Riverside Schoolin Lyndonville, Vermont. In additionto textbook authoring, she providesmathematics consulting andembedded coaching sessions.Dr. Boswell received her Ed.D. from the University ofVermont in 2010. She is a recipient of the PresidentialAward for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching and isa Tandy Technology Scholar. Laurie has taught mathto students at all levels, elementary through college. In addition, Laurie has served on the NCTM Board ofDirectors and as a Regional Director for NCSM. Alongwith Ron, Laurie has co-authored numerous mathprograms and has become a popular national speaker.—Laurie Boswell, Ed.D.NGL.Cengage.com/BigIdeas1

Program Philosophy: Rigor and Balance withEmbedded Mathematical mbedded Mathematical PracticesThe Big Ideas Mathprogram balancesconceptual understandingwith procedural fluency.Real-life applications createconnections to content andhelp turn mathematicallearning into an engagingand meaningful way toexplore the real world.Real-LifeApplicationsEmbedded Mathematical Practices in grade-level content promote a greater understandingof how mathematical concepts are connected to each other and to real-life scenarios.2

In writing the Activities andExplorations, I wanted toprovide ALL students withthe opportunity to start themwith some success.—Ron Larson, Ph.D.ConceptualUnderstandingExplorations and guidingEssential Questions encourageconceptual understanding.ProceduralFluencyScaffolded lessons allow forprocedural fluency and providethe opportunity to use clear, precise mathematical language.Real-LifeApplicationsReal-life applications providestudents with opportunities to createconnections between classroomlessons and realistic scenarios.NGL.Cengage.com/BigIdeas3
