THE BOOK OF ANCIENT FORMULASFORMULAS3INTRODUCTIONto the Annotated EditionYronwodeby Catherine Yronwode"The Ancient BookBook of Formulas," a 94 page magical formulary, wasoriginally published in 1940. It is long out of print and in the publicdomain. It was posted to UseNet in 1999 by Laurie Brandt(brandtfamily@sprintmail.com), for which many people will be very grateful.Laurie's copy of the text was missing two pages, but since she had doneso much work in scanning and posting already, I added those two pagesfrom my own copy by hand. The edition of "The Ancient Book of Formulas" which Laurie scannedwas a 1960s reprint by Dorene Publishing (of Texas), of a book that hadoriginally been published by Oracle Products Corporation (New York)in 1940 and then by Dorene Publishing (New York). The original editionand some of the earlier reprints have the Oracle Products CorporationCorporationmonogram (OPC) on the back cover, even after OPC was no longer thepublisher. Judging by the internal running heads on pages 13 - 94, theoriginal title may have been "The Book of Ancient Formulas" -- but thisis purely speculation. The uncredited authorauthor of "The Ancient Book of Formulas" was thesame mysterious Mr. Young who apparently had founded OracleProducts and who wrote several other books under the names Louis deClaremont and Lewis de Claremont,Claremont, most notably, "Legends of Incense,Herb, and Oil Magic,"Magic," which was first published by OPC in 1936, thenby Dorene in a revised edition in 1938, further revised in 1966. If you'veread "Legends,"Legends," you will find in it references to "The Ancient Book ofFormulas." There was also a third companion volume in this series, "The

THE BOOK OF ANCIENT FORMULASFORMULAS4Ancient Book of Magic," also by the pseudonymous Mr. de Claremont.Claremont.Two other texts by the same author are "Seven Steps to Power" and"Seven Keys to Power.""The Ancient Book of Formulas" was designed as a workbook forOPC's customers who were -- at the time of original publication -- ableto buy the named CompoundsCompounds and Bouquets (Stock Oil Blends) fromthe OPC and use them to make up their own dressing oils, incense, andso forth at home. This method of marketing blends of essential oils wasapparently not successful, successful, for the OPC went out of business sometimeduringduring World War II. The proportions of subsidiary ingredients andcolouring agents given in the recipes are great -- but you still needformulas of your own for the Compounds and Bouquets -- and they areno longer manufactured. If you wish to acquire a specificspecific recipe for a stock oil ("Compound")named in this book, first check in the page called Lucky Mojo FreeSpells Archive: Recipes for Magical Potions used in SpellSpell-Casting;Casting; ifthe formula you wantwant is not there, try asking for it by name (in the subjectline) in the UseNet newsgroups alt.lucky.w andalt.paranormal.spells.hexes.magic .Although de Claremont's other books were kept in print for many years, "The AncientBook of Formulas" went out of print long ago due to the frustrating lack of availability ofthe OPC compounds needed to actually complete the formulas it only describes in part.Used copies sell for between 15.00 and 25.00 in the o.p. book market, depending oncondition and edition. Because the copyright was never renewed, the work is now in thePublic Domain.

THE BOOK OF ANCIENT FORMULASFORMULAS16INCENSESMan's first idea of perfume started with incense, and was accidentallydiscovered centuries ago when man in gathering wood to use in his burntofferings found that some bushes or woods gavegave-off a pleasant odorwhen burning. Of these he discovered Frankincense and Myrrh andBenzoin which exists as gums or sap in trees, and in Sandalwood,Cinnamon and Patchouli. In order to be easier understood, it might bewell to try to classify thethe Incenses according to their ingredients and intheir particular services in which they are used.CHINESE INCENSEChinese Incense always contains as a base Patchouli Leaves or Rootwith a possibility of Cinnamon being added, and in some incidents, it isused with Pig Dung. This is used sometimes in the Temples on somereligious ceremonies. Other spices may be added. In the Lama Templesof Tibet, they generally burn just butter.INDIA INCENSEAll India or Hindu Incenses contain Sandalwood as a base, and theytogether with any Spice, particularlyparticularly Cinnamon, is burned in theTemples. However, some of the Hindu Incenses are made more aromaticwith the addition of essential oils or perfume bases.

THE BOOK OF ANCIENT FORMULASFORMULAS17EGYPTIAN INCENSEMost Egyptian Incense is the burning of plainplain Symtra Benzoin, however, this may be mixed with a little Frankincense and Myrrh as avariation.PERSIAN INCENSEPersian Incense is a combination using Sandalwood and a Spice, mainlyCinnamon, together with Benzoin or Frankincense and Myrrh.ECCLESIASTICALECCLESIASTICAL INCENSEThat used by the Catholic Church is Frankincense, however, it must beburned with Charcoal. The Catholic Church have rigid specifications asto the Incenses used in its Church. No aromatic or synthetics may beused. There are occasions whenwhen some churches will use an Incensecontaining other ingredients than plain Frankincense. As an example, anaddition of a little Myrrh and Benzoin, Sandalwood or Cinnamon.EUROPEAN INCENSEEuropean Incenses aromaticaromatic or household Incense, which is generallymade with Charcoal, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Cinnamon, Benzoin, andvaried with perfume oil compounds either in floral odors or a bouquet.

THE BOOK OF ANCIENT FORMULASFORMULAS18OCCULT INCENSEOccult Incenses are used to create a higher vibration according to thespecific work involved, and they comprise mixtures of all materials used inIncenses with the addition of essential and aromatic oils as desired. Thefield is so large, that it would take a book in itself to make properreference; however, the Incense formulas following in this chapterchapter will givefairly good idea as to how the materials are suggested. The followingformulas are suggested as those found in many of the occult bookstogether with some of the more modern versions. The names used areonly to designate those names which are recognizable from some of thebooks. In order to make an Incense practical and burnable, the suggestion ismade to use Bamba Wood base, which is manufactured especially forthis use, and made in one hundred meshmesh finess.*These names are used only as a reminder for those used in the wellknown Occult Books.BIBLE INCENSESBible Incenses always contains Gum Frankincense and Gum Myrrhmixed with Bamba Wood base or placed direct on Charcoal. BibleIncenses may be blended with Perfume Compound Oil to give variousdesired effects.Ex. Frankincense grains1 OunceMyrrh grains1 Ounce
