easy Hundertwasser designsFriedensreich Hundertwasser was born in Austriain 1928. His art was greatly influenced by hisbelief that there are no straight lines in nature so,consequently, he did not include straight lines inhis artwork. His guiding principal was that oneshould live in harmony with nature.Hundertwasser’s use of bold, bright colors andorganic lines makes him one of the world’s mostfamous contemporary painters. This project is a spin-off of my HundertwasserLollypop flowers for 3rd and 4th grade. Thislesson focuses on drawing very simple organiclines with two colors of oil pastel. The purpose is to teach kinders how to press hardwith an oil pastel and how to paint over theHUNDERTWASSER: Create Your Own City byDoris Kutschbach and Rahel Goldnerpastels with watercolor paint. I highly recommendliquid watercolors as the colors are intense andwill allow the white lines to really stand out.WHAT YOU’LL NEED 11” x 9” 90-lb watercolorpaperWatercolor paintsBlack & white oil pastelsDEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!2

Instructions for spirals:Hundertwasser was known for his use oforganic lines. He drew his lines and spiralshapes very close together.Kinders and young kids can practice drawingspiral shapes by starting in the middle anddrawing concentric circles until they literallydraw off the page. This is what to say:Place your black oil pastel in the center ofyour watercolor paper.Start to draw a spiral. Make sure the spiralgets bigger and bigger. If you run out of space, just draw part of yourspiral right on your paper placemat. Now, let’s go back to the first dot in themiddle of your paper. Draw another line thatfollows the first line all the way around thespiral.Use a white oil pastel to draw close togetherlines outside the spiral in any open space onthe paper.Use THREE colors of watercolor paint andpaint the different sections of the spiral.DEEP SPACE SPARKLE & THE MEMBERS CLUB!3
