Utah Watercolor SocietyJanuary / February 2016UWS 2015-2016 BoardPresident’s MessagePresidentBlue Haired Ladies Going RogueColleen Reynoldscolleencrbe@q.comVice PresidentAnn Galtgaltann@ymail.comRecording SecretaryLinda (LD) Artman ldartman2@comcast.netBessann Swanson (alternate)bessanswansonart@hotmail.comExhibition Chairs & ImagesSandy SleeperArt SleeperTerrece netterrece@comcast.netDo we want our Utah Watercolor Society to be considered theSociety of Blue Haired Amateur Ladies Who Paint Florals andLandscapes? I don’t know about you, but this characterizationof our membership made me bristle. So I looked into it. Ourmembership does tend to be between 55 and 75 and mostlyfemale. Most of us do not have a degree in art, have work in agallery, or paint as a primary income. I personally fit the profilealmost to a tee I paint flowers too! Yikes!Colleen Reynoldsgogail.w@gmail.comrfillmore7@yahoo.comAnd then I started to wonder Is this a bad thing? I love the supportiveenvironment of this society. Maybe we do not want to have a society of onlyprofessional, competitive artists? How about if everyone felt welcome andchallenged; amateur enthusiasts and professionals alike?Mary Puseymary.pusey@comcast.netCynthia Powell (EventSpot)artists4ever@gmail.comToni Youngblood (FaceBook)youngbloop@gmail.comWhat if we implement programs that both encourage our traditional membership toparticipate, but also entice those who want to “rub shoulders with the professionalcrowd”? I think we DO have a society that speaks to both now. Here are some ofthe things we are doing to encourage new, creative ideas and entice futuregenerations of watercolorists:MembershipGail WilhelmsenReida FillmoreCommunicationsNewsletterJenny Love jenniferloveartwork@yahoo.com1)Youthful Watercolorists. We are working hard to entice young talent to ourmembership. UWS Past President, Maura Naughton, has invested effort intorecognizing high school watercolor artists through the Mary StraightScholarship fund. Thank you to all of you who so generously contributedduring December’s fund drive! UWS Presidents have also gone to promotethe UWS in local college and university watercolor classes. We offerdiscounted exhibition entry fees to students enrolled in art programs at Utahcolleges and universities.2)Merchant Partners. The UWS is an economic force, nearly 300 membersstrong. That is a lot of purchasing power! We have established a MerchantPartner program that gives discounts to current UWS members. So far, wehave four local businesses in our Merchant Partner list: Homewood Suites inMidvale (discounted room rates), Alpine Mat Company (wholesale framepricing), the Visual Art Institute (discounted education passes), and ColleenReynolds Business Endeavors (Daniel Smith watercolor pigment). Do youknow of any other merchants who would be interested in participating?3)Exhibition Requirements. Holy cow! We’re going rogue! No mat, no glass, onboard! What? Starting with the 2016 Fall Exhibition, we will allow for alternativewater media products, both in painting and presentation. We will keep theSpring Open Exhibition more traditional, while the Fall Member Exhibition willbecome more progressive. Be sure to read your future exhibition prospectusclosely! Not all prospectuses will be created equal.PublicitySherry Meidellsherry@sherrymeidell.comBookkeeperCynthia Hepworthcindyjhep@gmail.comEducation ProgramsJulie Ickesutahjewels@hotmail.comMini-WorkshopsCynthia PowellBarbara GlickBonita ollefson41@gmail.comPaint-OutsMaggie Harrisonmaggie.watercolor8@gmail.comBlaine Claytonclaytonblaine@live.comWestern Federation DelegateTom Howardtomhoward11@hotmail.comPast President & WFWS AlternateKristi e Pfisterroxane.pfister@usu.eduNan Graynanrgray@gmail.comKathy Sutherlandksutherlandfineart@comcast.netSmall Works Exhibition ChairGayle AllenBarbara -CVC PresidentLaura Hawleylaura.hawley@gmail.comWebsite: www.utahwatercolor.orgEmail: info@utahwatercolor.orgFind UWS on Facebook atwww.facebook.com/UtahWatercolorSocietyI personally value every single UWS member who joins orrenews each year. After wetting his paper hepoured and dripped the paint, allowingit to mix on the paper. Followed byblowing the pigment around with hismouth and moving it with his fingers. Ifwe had all stopped to think about itbefore, it really is easier to makecircles for grapes with our fingers thanwith a brush.Eventually he did bring out a brush to“paint around” (as he refers tonegative painting). And in the same evening, the first timefor many of us, he also demonstratedChinese painting. We were a littleshocked when he crumpled up the ricepaper in a ball before slightly flatteningit out and painting on it with hisChinese paints and black ink, usingChinese brushes. The crumpling madeit possible for Lian to easily achievewonderful textures in his trees andmountain. For those who purchased any of hisbooks, he signed them inside the frontcover with a painting, as well as hissignature.Painting by Linda FlanneryUWS Paint Spot, January/February 2016If you could not make it to the meetingand are kicking yourself, you can atleast experience a sampling of Lian’smethods on YouTube.Maura Naughton MiniWorkshop RecapMauraNaughton'smarbleizingworkshop was a big hit! The way theycreate is often simple, fresh and direct. I see the way theyat times emphasize the important, get caught up indecoration, explore texture, color and pattern, andsometimes get so lost in the process that they forgetabout any final product.I also see them compare themselves unfairly to oneanother. There are all kinds of kids, and all kinds ofapproaches to artwork. As a teacher, I see the beauty ofeach student’s unique approach to an assignment.Laura HawleyI watch it unfold in often surprising ways. Sometimes the child is confident, but I willoften hear expressions of discouragement, especially from the older students. Theymay wish to do their artwork more like another student. As a new teacher, I have spent a certain amount of time observing some of themore seasoned teachers in their classrooms. I marvel at the amazing abilities ofeach of these teachers, and sometimes get frustrated in my attempts to emulatethem, or my failure to create the same classroom environment as other teachers.I have learned and implemented many good skills and classroom techniquesthrough careful observation and patient practice. I have a long way to go. But I havealso learned that some things are just never going to be “the same.” I am a differentperson, with different strength and weaknesses. I cannot be just like anotherteacher. But I do have my own strengths, my own “flavor” I can add to the students’experiences. It is the same in art. We attend workshops, watch demonstrations, and read books. We practice techniques, and all that is good. We learn from each other. But we donot try to BE each other, we are our own selves and, in the end, it is important to letour own uniqueness shine. We each have our own voice to add. Let’s appreciateour own uniqueness.-LauraPublicityNancy Eastmondnancy@eastmond.orgHospitalityLeisa Firth deer-hollow@comcast.netBlog Spot: www.uws-cvc.blogspot.comCVC Member Meetings are held thesecond Tuesday of each month at theLogan Library.Octopus Sketch by Laura Hawley (watercolor pencil experiment)UWS Paint Spot, January/February 20167
