West Shore Jr. Sr. High SchoolAccelerationThree accelerations are required for West Shore High School graduation. Students must earn ONE (1) creditof acceleration prior to ninth grade by successful completion of: Algebra IOR Algebra I HonorsStudents must earn the other TWO (2) credits of accelerations in grades 9-12 by successfully completing: Advanced Placement course(s)OR Dual Enrollment (AA or AS – 1000 level or higher)Advanced Placement (AP)West Shore AP courses are an opportunity for students to pursue a rigorous, enriching, college-levelexperience while in high school. Students who elect to take AP courses are required to take a comprehensiveexam, paid for by the school district, upon completion of the course. The scores on AP exams provide collegeswith the means to potentially grant credit and/or advanced placement in college courses for those studentswho have met the score requirement. Advanced Placement CAPSTONEWest Shore is one of more than 1100 schools worldwide to implement AP Capstone --an innovative programthat allows students to engage in the rigorous development of skills critical for success in college inquiry,research, collaboration, and writing. The program includes a two-course sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. Developed in response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, APCapstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of AP courses and exams. Students wishing topursue the AP Capstone Diploma will work with Guidance to register for AP Capstone courses in their 10thgrade year.Brevard Virtual School/Florida Virtual SchoolFlorida Virtual School also offers computer based AP courses to high school students. Online courses arerigorous and require students to be serious and highly motivated. Registration information is available inguidance or at www.flvs.net.Dual EnrollmentDual Enrollment is an opportunity for qualified student in grades 10-12 to begin earning college credit whileenrolled in high school. DISTRICT GENERAL INFORMATIONSelecting a Program of StudyStudents should select their program of study carefully. Course selections should be made to fulfill requirementsboth for graduation and postsecondary plans. This booklet is designed to assist students and parents in meetingthose requirements. Schools may supplement this booklet with information unique to an individual school. HIGH SCHOOL PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS9th Grade to 10th Grade1. Enrollment - Been enrolled one year in the 9-12 sequence;2. Credits - Earn at least 5 credits (block schools – 6 credits);3. Attendance - Meet the district attendance requirements.10th Grade to 11th Grade1. Enrollment - Been enrolled two years in the 9-12 sequence;2. Credits - Earn at least 11 credits (block schools –13 credits);3. Earn 2 credits in language arts;4. Earn 2 credits in mathematics;5. Attendance - Meet the district attendance requirements.11th Grade to 12th Grade1. Enrollment - Been enrolled three years in the 9-12 sequence;2. Credits - Earn at least 18 credits (block schools –21 credits);3. Earn 3 credits in language arts;4. Earn 3 credits in mathematics;5. Attendance - Meet the district attendance requirements.NOTES: Must meet all End of Course Assessments and statewide, standardized assessment requirements bygraduation per Florida Statute. To be classified as a freshman (9th grade), a student must have been promoted from grade eight. Exceptions to the number of years spent in the 9-12 sequence for reclassification may be granted tostudents who are in a planned acceleration program. (Early High School Graduation option). (s.1003.4281F.S.)o The term “early graduation” means graduation from high school in less than 8 semesters or theequivalent.o A student who graduates early may continue to participate in school activities and social events andattend and participate in graduation events with the student’s cohort, as if the student were stillenrolled in high school. However, per FSHAA (bylaw 9.2.2.7) if a student is not enrolled in school heor she is not able to participate in sports.o A student who graduates early will be included in class ranking, honors, and award determinationsfor the student’s cohort. A student who graduates early must comply with district school board rulesand policies regarding access to the school facilities and grounds during normal operating hours. F.S.1003.4281 (3).o For data entry purposes regarding the graduation date - the final transcript should reflect a graduationdate of one school day following the completion of the graduation requirements.High School Instructional Handbook22018-2019

o Students who plan to graduate early should be classified as 12th graders with the following: Mid-Year Graduation – at the beginning of the 1st semester of the last year or if the waiver isapproved during the 1st semester, as soon as the waiver is approved. Early Graduation – at the beginning of the 2nd semester, of if the waiver is approved during the2nd semester, as soon as the waiver is approved.Students who meet the promotion requirements shall be reclassified each semester. Credits for gradelevel classification may be waived for students who are approved for Early or Mid-Year Graduation or forstudents who are enrolled in an approved Performance Based Diploma Plan through the AlternativeEducation Program. At a minimum, a student considered for such a waiver must have taken the statewide,standardized
