Health ismore than being sickor injured. Healthincludes diet, exercise, sleep, and much, muchmore. (Continued onPage 5)4 Page

(Continued from page4)It includes how ourbody and mind areworking. When theyare working well andin harmony, we feelmore alive, capable, and positive. It isimportant to get acheck in from a doctoror other health careprofessional forguidance to have thebest possible health. Two people who havethe same height, weight, and age mayhave dramaticallydifferent health careneeds. Maintainingyour health can bequite simple but itdoes requireconsistency and followthrough.SSAN memberHighlightsby Robert Levy SSANRepresentative of theUCD MIND InstituteUC/CEDDHello my name isRobert Levy and Irepresent the UCDMIND InstituteUC /CEDD here inSacramento. Oneway you can do it istake theStrengthFinder SurveyAssessment. It is funand doesn’t take awhole lot of time. Itook the survey andmy top 5 themes wereintellection, connectedness, input, strategic, andfuturistic. Mystrengths may not beall that practical, butthey do show I like tothink. I have been toldthat I live in my head. Idon’t know about that,(Continued on page 8)7 Page

(Continued from page 7)but I can’t think ofanything more excitingthan to come across anew idea and sharingit with others. At the June SSANmeeting, we talkedabout mental healthdisabilities andwellness. Somemembers identifiedthey live with variousissues of mental healthdisabilities. I reportthat I live with variousforms of mental healthissues and my goal isto achieve themaximum level ofmental health possiblefor me in order toachieve wellness—mind, soul, and bodybalance.Life can feel like a realgrind sometimes andbe exhausting. Whenfaced with times likethese, it is importantto know what reallyexcites you andenergizes you. It maybe reading a goodbook, listening to goodmusic, cooking a goodmeal, watching a goodmovie, or hanging outwith family or friends. Ihave been told goingout and buying a newpair of shoes can bevery enjoyable. It isimportant toremember that life isto be enjoyed andsavored like fine wineand cheese. Life is tobe celebrated. It ismore than to-do lists, duty or obligation.I find it tempting tothink about all theproblems in my lifeand to be very criticalwith myself and withothers. When I findmyself doing this, Ichallenge mycriticalness withfocusing on how muchI have to be gratefuland thankful for in mylife. I have my job, myapartment, my buspass, my iPhone, myMac, my TV, myhealth, family andfriends, my education,my self-advocacyinvolvements, mybooks, and the Y. Iconfess that if I gave itmore thought I couldfind a lot more to bethankful for in my life. With my education inpolitical science, philosophy, andeconomics, I like tothink about bigthoughts. I amespecially intofairness. My thoughtsmay not always benovel, but they areimportant to me andgive my life meaning. For example, I feelstrongly that goods, services, income andwealth, andopportunity should beallocated by talent andability regardless ofrace and culture, gender or sexualorientation, language,(Continue on Page 9)8 Page

(Continued from page 8)religion, or politicalaffiliation. As far asdisabilities, I feel ajust, benevolent, andenlightened stateprovides supports andresources to empowerindividuals living withdisabilities to reachtheir full potential. Thestate also has theobligation to ensurepeople have their basicneeds met. Peopleliving with disabilitiesin turn have thechallenge andopportunity to achievetheir full potential. So this fall, let’s claimand own all the goodthings in our life. It willmake a big differencein our lives, in ourfriends and family, andthe people we serve. The Beatle’s song “Letit Be” comes to mindas does the saying“Stay calm and carryon”.SELF-DETERMINATIONPROGRAM (SDP)UPDATEto be done, butincludes the key partsand steps that arebeing worked on, alsohas the target datesfor each one to becompleted. The Department isvery pleased to havethe application forfederal funding, orWaiver, for the SelfDeterminationProgram approved bythe Centers forMedicare andMedicaid Services(CMS).
