Alter ChristusNumber 9 - July 2021Alter Christus“As an alter Christus (another Christ) the priest is in Christ, for Christ and withChrist. Because he belongs to Christ, the priest is radically at the service of all people:he is the minister of their salvation” (Pope Benedict XVI)Monthly bulletin dedicated to all the Priests of Papua New Guinea and Solomon IslandsThis Month’s Reading:Archbishop Fulton J. SheenDear Father,Among all the books written by FultonJ. Sheen, Treasure in Clay is probablyone of the best. The book is Sheen’sautobiography and was completedshortly before his death in 1979. Forthis month’s bulletin, I selected a chaptercalled "The Hour That Makes My Day",in which the good Archbishop tellsus the secret of his perseverance andwisdom: the daily hour of adoration ofthe Blessed Sacrament. Our own experience tells us that manytimes it is very difficult for us to find"one free hour" to spend with Jesus inthe tabernacle. There are so many thingsto do in our parishes, that it’s very easyto find excuses and leave Jesus alone.Instead, according to Fulton J. Sheen, the hour of adoration is the source fromwhich everything else flows, and ourpriesthood and parishes will flourish andbe blessed with abundant graces if wegive Jesus the time He deserves. When Jesus called his disciples, theGospel says that he asked them "to bewith him." And that is what EucharisticAdoration means: to be with Jesus. Howcan we preach about Jesus, if we don’tspend time with Him and consequentlydon’t know Him? Books and theologicaltreatises are not enough to obtain a deepknowledge of Jesus. Fulton J. Sheen says:"The purpose of the Holy Hour is to1

July 2021encourage deep personal encounter withChrist." We must, as Jesus asked, "bewith him." To spend one hour in front ofthe tabernacle is not a waste of time, butthe very opposite! We become like theapostles in Gethsemane, and we fulfillOur Lord’s desire: "Could you not watchone hour with Me?"It is not by chance that great saints likePadre Pio, Mother Teresa, John Paul IIand Fulton Sheen used to pray one hourin front of the tabernacle every single day.If they could do it, should we not try?God bless you!Fr. Tomás Ravaioli, IVELCI DirectorAuthor: Archbishop Fulton J. SheenFulton John Sheen (May 8, 1895 - December 9, 1979) was an American bishop (laterarchbishop) of the Catholic Church known for his preaching and especially his work ontelevision and radio. Ordained a priest of the Diocese of Peoria in 1919, Sheen quicklybecame a renowned theologian. He went on to teach theology and philosophy at theCatholic University of America as well as acting as a parish priest before being appointedAuxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1951. He held this position until 1966,when he was made the Bishop of Rochester. He resigned in 1969 as his 75th birthdayapproached, and was made the Archbishop of the titular see of Newport, Wales. For 20 years as Father Sheen, laterMonsignor, he hosted the night-timeradio program The Catholic Hour on NBC(1930–1950) before moving to televisionand presenting Life Is Worth Living (1952–1957). Sheen's final presenting role wason the syndicated The Fulton SheenProgram (1961–1968) with a format verysimilar to that of the earlier Life is WorthLiving show. The cause for his canonization wasofficially opened in 2002. In June 2012,Pope Benedict XVI officially recognizeda decree stating that he lived a life of"heroic virtues" – a major step towardsbeatification – and he is now referredto as "Venerable." On July 5, 2019,Pope Francis approved a miracle thatoccurred through the intercession ofArchbishop Sheen, clearing the way forhis beatification.2

Alter ChristusThe Hour that Makes My DayBy Archbishop Fulton J. SheenOn the day of my Ordination, I madetwo resolutions:Briefly, here are some reasons why Ihave kept up this practice, and why Ihave encouraged it in others:1. I would offer the Holy Eucharistevery Saturday in honor of the BlessedMother to solicit her protection on mypriesthood. The Epistle to the Hebrewsbids the priest offer sacrifices not onlyfor others, but also for himself, since hissins are greater because of the dignity ofthe office.2. I resolved also to spend a continuousHoly Hour every day in the presence ofour Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.First, the Holy Hour is not a devotion;it is a sharing in the work of redemption. Our Blessed Lord used the words“hour” and “day” in two totally differentconnotations in the Gospel of John.“Day” belongs to God; the “hour”belongs to evil. Seven times in the Gospelof John, the word “hour” is used, and ineach instance it refers to the demonic, and to the moments when Christ is nolonger in the Father’s Hands, but inthe hands of men. In the Garden, ourLord contrasted two “hours” - one wasthe evil hour “this is your hour” - withwhich Judas could turn out the lights ofthe world. In contrast, our Lord asked:“Could you not watch one hour with Me?”.In other words, he asked for an hour ofreparation to combat the hour of evil; anhour of victimal union with the Cross toovercome the anti-love of sin.In the course of my priesthood Ihave kept both of these resolutions. The Holy Hour had its origin in apractice I developed a year before Iwas ordained. The big chapel in St.Paul’s Seminary would be locked bysix o’clock; there were still privatechapels available for private devotionsand evening prayers. This particularevening during recreation, I walkedup and down outside the closed majorchapel for almost an hour. The thoughtstruck me - why not make a HolyHour of adoration in the presence ofthe Blessed Sacrament? The next dayI began, and the practice is now wellover sixty years old.Secondly, the only time Our Lordasked the Apostles for anything was thenight he went into his agony. Then hedid not ask all of them, perhaps becausehe knew he could not count on theirfidelity. But at least he expected three3

July 2021to be faithful to him: Peter, James andJohn. As often in the history of theChurch since that time, evil was awake, but the disciples were asleep. That iswhy there came out of His anguishedand lonely Heart the sigh: “Could younot watch one hour with me?” Not for anhour of activity did He plead, but for anhour of companionship.engagement, or rise an hour earlier, buton the whole it has never been a burden, only a joy. I do not mean to say that allthe Holy Hours have been edifying, asfor example, the one in the church of St.Roch in Paris. I entered the church aboutthree o’clock in the afternoon, knowingthat I had to catch a train for Lourdestwo hours later. There are only aboutten days a year in which I can sleep inThe third reason I keep up the the daytime; this was one. Priests, like everybody else, are divided into two classes: roosters andowls. Some work better in the morning, others at night. An Anglican bishopwho was chided by a companion for hisshort night prayers explained: “I keepprayed up.”us in love with Christ unless both arepreceded by a personal encounter withhim. When Moses saw the burning bushin the desert, it did not feed on any fuel. The flame, unfed by anything visible, continued to exist without destroyingthe wood. So personal dedication toChrist does not deform any of ournatural gifts, disposition, or character; itjust renews without killing. As the woodbecomes fire and the fire endures, so webecome Christ and Christ endures.I have found that it takes some time tocatch fire in prayer. This has been one ofthe advantages of the daily Hour. It isnot so brief as to prevent the soul fromcollecting itself and shaking off themultitudinous distractions of the world.Sitting before the Presence is like a bodyexposing itself before the sun to absorbits rays. Silence in the Hour is a tête-átête with the Lord. In those moments,The Purpose of the Holy HourThe purpose of the Holy Hour is toencourage deep personal encounter withChrist. The holy and glorious God isconstantly inviting us to come to Him, tohold converse with Him, to ask for suchthings as we need and to experience whata blessing there is in fellowship with Him.When we are first ordained it is easy to giveself entirely to Christ, for the Lord fills usthen with sweetness, just as a mother givescandy to her baby to encourage her childto take the first step. This exhilaration, however, does not last long; we quicklylearn the cost of discipleship, which meansleaving nets and boats and countingtables. The honeymoon soon ends, and sodoes our self-importance at first hearingthe stirring title of “Father.”Sensitive love or human love declineswith time, but divine love does not. Thefirst is concerned with the body whichbecomes less and less responsive tostimulation, but in the order of grace, the responsiveness of the divine to tiny, human acts of love intensifies.Neither theological knowledge norsocial action alone is enough to keep5

July 2021one does not so much pour out writtenprayers, but listening takes its place. We do not say: “Listen, Lord, for Thyservant speaks,” but “Speak, Lord, forThy servant heareth.”I have often sought some way toexplain the fact that we priests are toknow Christ, rather than know aboutChrist. Many translations of the Bibleuse the word “know” to indicate theunity of two-in-one flesh. For example:“Solomon knew her not,” which meantthat he had no carnal relations with her.The Blessed Mother said to the Angel atthe Annunciation: “I know not man.”St. Paul urges husbands to possess theirwives in knowledge. The word “know”here indicates two-in-one flesh. Thecloseness of that identity is drawn fromthe closeness of the mind with any objectit knows. No knife could ever separatemy mind from the idea it has of anapple. The ecstatic union of a husbandand wife described as “knowing” is to bethe foundation of that love by which wepriests love Christ.Intimacy is openness which keeps backno secret and which reveals the heartopen to Christ. Too often friends arejust “two ships that pass in the night.”Carnal love, despite its seeming intimacy, often can become an exchange of twoegotisms. The ego is projected onto theother person and what is loved is not theother person, but the pleasure the otherperson gives. I have noticed throughoutmy life that whenever I shrank from thedemands that the encounter made onme, I would become busier and moreconcerned with activities. This gave mean excuse for saying: “I don’t have time,”as a husband can become so absorbed inbusiness as to forget the love of his wife. How Helpful the Holy Hour isIt is impossible for me to explain howhelpful the Holy Hour has been inpreserving my vocation. Scripture givesconsiderable evidence to prove that apriest begins to fail his priesthood whenhe fails in his love of the Eucharist.Too often it is assumed that Judas fellbecause he loved money. Avarice is veryrarely the beginning of the lapse and thefall of the ambassador. The history ofthe Church proves there are many withmoney who stayed in it. The beginningof the fall of Judas and the end of Judasboth revolved around the Eucharist. Thefirst mention that Our Lord knew whoit was who would betray him is at theend of the sixth chapter of John, whichis the announcement of the Eucharist. The fall of Judas came the night OurLord gave the Eucharist, the night ofthe Last Supper. The Eucharist is so essential to ourone-ness with Christ that as soon asOur Lord announced It in the Gospel,It began to be the test of the fidelity ofHis followers. First, He lost the masses, for it was too hard a saying and theyno longer followed Him. Secondly, Helost some of His disciples: “They walkedwith Him no more.” Third, it splitHis apostolic band, for Judas is hereannounced as the betrayer. So the Holy Hour, quite apart fromall its positive spiritual benefits, kept6

July 2021was restored again to the priesthoodand entrusted with the care of a parish.Divine Mercy wrought a change in him,and I received this letter:We had our annual Solemn Expositionof the Blessed Sacrament last week. Iencouraged enough people to comeand watch all day and every day, so thatwe would not have to take the BlessedSacrament down because of a lack ofa number of people to watch. On thefinal evening, I organized a processionwith the First Communicants strewingrose petals in front of the Lord. Themen of the parish formed a Guard ofHonor. The result was staggering: therewere over 250 people present for thatfinal procession and Holy Hour. I amconvinced that our people are searchingfor many of the old devotions whichmany of the parishes have done awaywith, and this is very often becausewe priests cannot be bothered puttingourselves out. Next year I hope thatour Solemn Exposition will be evenbetter attended because now the wordis getting around. These last coupleof weeks I have started a Bible studygroup; this is to encourage our peopleto read the Word of God. I start withreading of Scripture which we meditateon that evening; we then have a shortExposition of the Blessed Sacramentand meditation on the text until thetime of the Benediction.I have also started going around theparish and saying a Mass in one housein every street each week, and inviting allpeople in that particular street to comeand take part. The response has been quitegood, especially since I am only starting.I do not wish to become an activist priest,so I rise early and make my Holy Hour.I still have my own personal problems tocontend with, but I have taken couragefrom your words: “you will have to fightmany battles, but do not worry becausein the end you will win the war beforethe Blessed Sacrament.”Many of the laity who have read mybooks and heard my tapes are alsomaking the Holy Hour.A state trooper wrote that he had mytapes attached to his motorcycle andwould listen to them as he was cruisingthe highways: “Imagine,” he wrote, “thebewilderment of a speeder being stoppedby me while from the tape recorder wascoming one of your sermons about theEucharist.” He found it difficult at firstto find a church that was open duringthe day at a time he could make hisHour. Later on, he found a pastor whowas not only willing to open the church, but willing to make the Hour with him. Most remarkable of all was the effectthe preaching of the Holy Hour had onnon-Catholic ministers. I preached threeretreats to Protestant ministers - on twooccasions to over three hundred in SouthCarolina and Florida, and on anotheroccasion to a smaller group at PrincetonUniversity. I asked them to make acontinuous Holy Hour of prayer in orderto combat the forces of evil in the world, because that is what our Lord askedfor the night of His Agony. I addressedthem: “You are not blessed with thesame Divine Presence in your churchesthat I believe we possess. But you do8

Alter Christushave another presence that we do also, and that is the Scripture. At the VaticanCouncil we had a solemn procession ofthe Scriptures into the Council everymorning as a form of the Presence ofGod. You could make the Hour beforethe Scriptures.” Many came to me laterto inquire about the Eucharist, someeven asked to join with me in a HolyHour before the Eucharist.I know thousands of priests who havenot had the practice of making frequentvisits to the Blessed Sacrament, but I amabsolutely sure that, in the sight of God,they are a thousand times more worthythan I. In any case, this is the story ofthe means I chose in my priesthood tobe able to keep step with my brotherpriests in the service of the Lord. But why make a Holy Hour? Hereare ten reasons.2. Shake Noonday Devils: In ourbusy lives, it takes considerable timeto shake off the “noonday devils,” theworldly cares, that cling to our souls likedust. An hour with Our Lord followsthe experience of the disciples on theroad to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35). Webegin by walking with Our Lord, butour eyes are “held fast” so that we donot “recognize him.” Next, He converseswith our soul, as we read the Scriptures. The third stage is one of sweet intimacy,as when “he sat down at table with them.”The fourth stage is the full dawning ofthe mystery of the Eucharist. Our eyesare “opened,” and we recognize Him.Finally, we reach the point where we donot want to leave. The hour seemed soshort. As we arise, we ask: “Were not ourhearts burning within us when he spoketo us on the road, and when he made theScriptures plain to us?” (Luke 24:32).1. Time Well Spent: It is time spentin the presence of Our Lord Himself. If faith is alive, no further reason isneeded.3. Jesus Asked: Our Lord asked for it.“Had you no strength, then, to watch withme even for an hour?” (see Matt. 26:40).The word was addressed to Peter, but he9
