4 / MASSEY HALLS AUCKLAND - TE ÖHANGA VILLAGEHistoryYou are joining an amazing heritage. Massey University is named after a New ZealandPrime Minister, William Ferguson Massey (1865-1925). Our foundations were formed in 1928in Palmerston North by Sir Geoffrey Peren and Professor William Riddet, two visionarieswho valued educating students to apply knowledge and help solve problems of their day.Discoveries through research made over the years have helped shape New Zealand andchanged the way we do things. At Massey we continue to educate students who can think for themselves, look at challengesand see opportunities. Massey University has now expanded to four campuses – Auckland,Manawatu, Wellington and Distance.Albany, the home of Auckland campus, has been the fastest growing area of Auckland’s NorthShore. Strawberry gardens and dairy farms were redeveloped in the 1980s and 1990s intolifestyle blocks or housing. Our Auckland campus opened in 1993 and the surrounding area hasalso grown rapidly, expanding and supporting the University.Te Öhanga Village opened in February 2015. Further developments are planned for the campuswhich will see a new innovation complex which is due to start in 2020. As a student living onour campus, you are helping to shape Massey's and New Zealand's future.MĀORI NAMESTe Öhanga Village for the upper levelto refresh and strengthen themselvesto climb the lofty mountains; also refersto birds striving for the lofty perches.Öhanga literally means cradle, familyhome. We use bird names for the halls and treenames for the apartments. Birds reflectstudents in the halls flocking togetherand trees represent students in theapartments standing more strongly andindependently.Te Rito - The heart of the koru. The social hub.Whare Tui - HallWhare Pükeko - HallWhare Weka - HallWhare Tänekaha - ApartmentsWhare Matipo - ApartmentsWhare Tîtoki - Apartments

So . we have set upa little healthy inter hall competition tohelp us get educated and really good atrecycling!Over each semester recycling results willbe released that shows the ‘percentageof recycling achieved’ across all of thehalls and apartments. The results arebased on if items recycled in the binswere correctly recycled. This is a pass orfail system meaning if a bin contained ALLrecyclable items except one, then that binis ‘contaminated’ and fails.

22 / MASSEY HALLS AUCKLAND - TE ÖHANGA VILLAGESometimes it can be a challenge makingsure your whole hall gets it right everytime. The winners of the competition areannounced at the end of each semesterand the hall/apartment block who gainedthe best recycling results for the wholesemester will be in for a treat.LIGHTS OUTYou might have noticed the stickers onthe light switches. We were noticing alot of residents were leaving lights onwhen they were no longer in use! So oursustainability hall reps got together andput the stickers up to remind residents toswitch them off when they’re done. Let'snot waste electricity.WATER USAGEIt’s really important that we are allconsiderate of our water usage, both toreduce the impacts of overuse on ourenvironment & the risk of drought in theAuckland area! Here’s some easy tips to reduce yourwater usage!
