Process, Step 1:Determine Your Target What type of role are you looking for – nail down thebest way to describe your field and the type of work you’repursuing. Only then can people help you find it!Find a niche in your industry – something you want tohighlight and be known for so you don’t sound like a cloneof everyone else. Be specific and use examples whenable.“As a sourcing specialist, Ithrive on finding innovative“I’m in Human Resources” vs.ways to attract new recruits!”

Process, Step 2:Strategize Your In-person MessageDevelop a good networking speech – Figure out how tovocalize your message and branding strategy. What’s my constant: “Hi, I’m Jessica Hill. I’m an HRGeneralist with 10 years experience in insurance. I have aknack for attracting and recruiting top talent in the local marketand am currently looking for opportunities in ”How can I modify for my audience: “ .the Detroit area withboth healthcare and finance companies.”

Key to A Modern Speech: Decide WhatKind of Work You’re Looking ForWhat are YOU interested in? What kind of work do you want? Before you can write a pitch that will help you reach yourgoals, you need to know what those goals are. Once youknow what you want, it’s easier to present yourself in a waythat makes sense. For example, if you really want to be a web designer, emphasize and focus on the web design work you already dorather than spending a lot of time on the dead-end job youwant to ditch.

Example 1:When You’re a Stay-at-home ParentOld Speech: “I’m a stay-at-home mom, and I’ve recentlystarted doing web design.”New Speech: “I’m a web designer who’s making the interneta more beautiful and positive place! My counselingbackground helps me understand my customers’ needs. Thanks to working in administration and being a stay-athome mom, I’m great at coming up with solutions, no matterwhat you throw at me.”

Example 2:When You’re On 2 Different PathsOld Speech: “I’m a teacher taking online coursesin programming”New Speech: “I combine different worlds in mywork. I do physical design for textiles and virtualdesign for websites. I get my unique designperspective from my experience studyingarchaeology and teaching abroad.”

Process, Step 3:Strategize Your Online Message Social profiles should tell a consistent, interestingmessage – Vary content, but stay consistent in language, tone, and topics to solidify your industry expertiseDo a “health check” on your LinkedIn profile to make sureit’s optimized: www.resumeworded.comPost regularly – Minimum once a week, but shoot for twoor three times a week (notice if different times get youdifferent results)Be a source of information – original content is bestbecause it shows your personal thought processRoutine Posting Constant Reinforcement

Process, Step 4:Network, Network, Network! Spend 80% of your conversations focusing on whomever youare talking to and only 20% on self-promotion. Exposes the “hidden” job market Engage with others – Be it on social media or in the realworld, you have to build, strengthen and reinforce your brandidentity as often as possible. Don’t let people forget about you!
