Lisa is responsiblefor our improved Pet Retention and Shelter Pet EnrichmentPrograms. This new position is partially funded by BanfieldCharities, and is helping pet owners and adopters addressissues such as behavioral problems (i.e. housetraining, cratetraining, barking, litter box issues) and short-term financialchallenges, ultimately working to keep pets in their homes andout of the SPCA.Samantha Kimberlin,Behavior Assistant recentlycelebrated her eighth year ofemployment with the SPCA.Romanthe 2013SPCA MascotBoard of DirectorsRhonda QuaglianaPresidentJay KesslerVice PresidentBill DaggettTreasurerLisa Ross MoorefieldSecretaryMary ChinnBecky CraigScheline T. Theseenrichment programs not only aim to improve the quality of life forpets in our care, they will also help the animals present themselvespositively when a potential adopter visits and help the pet successfullytransition into a home. Over time, we hope that these programs willreduce the number of pets surrendered or returned to the SPCA.Help Grace Walk AgainFew images warm our hearts more than a happy dog running togreet us. Their cheerfulness is infectious—it inevitably places asmile on our face, even on a bad day.Our animal companions give us unconditional love and affection, bringing boundless joy into our lives. In addition, theyeven improve our health by lowering blood pressure, reducingstress, preventing heart disease, and fighting depression fortheir caretakers. Now, you have the opportunity to help with thehealth of a special little gal.Grace, a five-year-old Chihuahua, has lost the use of two of herlegs due to completely dislocated kneecaps and abnormal curvatures in her femurs andtibias. She was born with a condition that went untreated and now needs specializedsurgery since her legs have continued to degenerate during her short life. The complicated surgery Grace is facing will involve straightening her femurs and tibias,as well as returning her kneecaps to their proper location. The procedure entails cuttingand removing her bone, followed by bone plating and pinning. Our veterinarian is confident Grace will enjoy a full and active life following this surgery. You can help Grace run happily toward the lucky person who will adopt her and puta smile on their face too! The surgery that will help Grace walk again costs 4,000, soplease give generously as soon as you are able, using the enclosed envelope or online atwww.caspca.org. Grace and her new person thank you!

Senior Pets for Senior People--A Life-Saving MatchCanine Therapy: it’s not just rhetoric. Studies haveproven that spending as little as a half-hour a weekwith a visiting canine measurably reduce the lonelinessexperienced by the elderly and boosts overall health. With this in mind, imagine what it can do for someonewho adopts a canine or feline companion of their own. Iknow the studies to be true, not just because I have readthe research, but because I have seen it with my owneyes.and had proof of alltheir vaccinations. The hospital’s policy, which I dearly hope allhospitals adopt, is thatcompanion animals areconsidered a part of thefamily, and family is agreat healer!Last winter, you may have read about my mother’s storyin the SPCA’s Twelve Saves of Christmas. I describedhow my 81-year-old mother, a widow of a few years, wassad and lonely. She no longer craved the little thingsthat make her smile. She casually mentioned gettinga companion – a canine companion. In came Sophia,a three-legged, senior American Eskimo dog fromthe SPCA. She won my mother over and became myadopted “sister.” My mother adopted Sophia throughthe Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA’s Seniors For Seniorsprogram. This program allows senior humans to adoptsenior animal companions at no charge. In addition, they are also provided free, ongoing veterinary carethrough the clinic at the SPCA. After Sophia’s adoption, life was once again full for my mom. They lifted eachother’s spirits and motivated each other, and as a result, each awoke with a smile. Sophia needed love and carewhich mom happily provided and Sophia, in her ownvery special way, took care of my mother. To say Mom was elatedis an understatement! The next day I broughtSophia in. She was theperfect canine visitorand when she saw my mom, her tail wagged like neverbefore. Mom yelled with delight and Sophia was instantlyup on her bed. They spent several minutes simply lovingon each other, with both overjoyed at the sight of the other.Soon they were both so at peace that they drifted off todreamland, sleeping together just like they do at home.On a recent trip with Sophia to visit family, Momsuffered a stroke. She was taken by ambulance to ahospital where she would remain for six days. WhenMom awoke in the Emergency Room, she immediatelyasked for Sophia. My aunt and uncle reassured Momthat Sophia was being well-cared for by their neighbor, but when I arrived the following day, Mom askedabout Sophia again. I joked that I was going to sneakher into the hospital by wrapping her in a baby blanketand carrying her into the hospital like an infant. Momdesperately wanted to see Sophia, but didn’t want mebreaking any rules. Recovering but struggling to gain herstrength back, Mom was depressed (hospitals can do thatto people). While speaking with a medical technicianabout Sophia, we learned that patients’ dogs wereallowed to visit as long as they were well-manneredWithin 24 hours of that initial visit from Sophia, Mom wasmaking even greater strides and had decided she was goingto prove to the doctors it was time for her to be dischargedASAP. And she did.For those of you with elderly parents, please considerencouraging them to adopt a dog or cat from theCharlottesville-Albemarle SPCA through their Seniors forSeniors Program. It will make a positive difference as theystroll through the sunset of their lives.Today, Mom and Sophia are both happily together at homeand thriving. Canine Therapy: it’s a magical cure.by Liz LewisSenior Pets for Senior PeopleTiggerJesterIf you are over the age of fifty, you can adopt a senior pet, likeTigger or Jester, from the SPCA at no cost and the SPCA willhelp by providing free routine medical care in our clinic. It’sa win-win--you give a less adoptable pet a chance at a lovinghome and you receive the love and companionship of yournew best friend. Give a Little Each Month and Save a Lot of LivesPledge your love for animals by becoming a Constant Companion.SPCA Constant Companions give a little each month and help save A LOT of lives. Bymaking a pledge to give monthly, supporters are helping to save thousands of animalswho require special medical care like Jeremy, Dreamer, Sgt. Pepper and Samson. Jeremy When Jeremy arrived at the SPCA in early December, he was coveredin sores and almost completely bald. Now, after months of skin treatments, love andcare, his fur is slowly growing back. Jeremy is recovering in a foster home and soonhe’ll be ready for a forever family.Jeremy Dreamer Dreamer weighed less than a pound when she arrived at the SPCAand was so cold that her temperature didn’t register on the thermometer. Oncewarmed and stabilized, Dreamer was found to have severe eyelid agenesis whichlimited her vision, irritated her eyes and could cause blindness if not correctedwith surgery. Support from Constant Companions made her surgery andrecovery possible. Dreamer is seen on the left, resting comfortably in hernew home.Jeremy inhis fosterhome.DreamerSgt. Pepper Sgt. Pepper Sgt. Pepper was found running around an apartmentcomplex in Charlottesville. His left eye had been previously removed and hisright eye was ruptured and infected. Because of the eye’s poor condition, itrequired immediate removal by the SPCA Veterinarian. Although Sgt. Pepperis now blind, he has settled in to his new home and can find his way around. He spends a lot of time wrestling with his Aussie brother and sister, getting lovefrom his cat cousins, and snuggling with any human who will offer him abelly rub. He is big fan of squeak toys and he loves playing tug-of-war. Samson When Samson was found in a Barboursville yard, he wasin a sad state. He was dragging his hind legs, unable to walk, underweight and coveredin dirt. By the time Samson arrived at the SPCA in late January, it was likely he had beeninjured for some time. The SPCA Veterinarian discovered that both of Samson’s legswere severely fractured and felt it was possible that he had been hit by a car. Because ofthe severity of his leg injuries, he was sent to Virginia Veterinary Specialists for surgery. He returned to the SPCA for a lengthy recovery and once it was safe for him to beginwalking, he was sent to recover in a foster home.Sgt. Pepper in his new home.SamsonToday, thanks to the efforts of the SPCA and the support of our community, Samson rests comfortably in hisnew home. He enjoys chasing his adopted cat sister, watching the birds through the window and acting as a devoted studybuddy. He is only able to enjoy these things because of the efforts of our caring community whose support made his surgery, recovery and new home possible.Become a Constant Companion today and begin making a monthly contribution that adds up to a life saved.Your gift makes it possible for the SPCA to continue providing this critical life-saving care for our community’s pets in need. It’s easy to pledge your love for local animals by using the enclosed envelope or signing up online to make a monthlycontribution at caspca.org. Romanthe 2013SPCA MascotMeet our 2013 mascot, Roman! This handsome guy is a three-year-old English Mastiff. Roman and Susan recently relocatedto Charlottesville from Brooklyn, where Roman spent his free time volunteering with the Good Dog Foundation as atherapy dog for cancer patients. He’s enjoying the transition from city-dog to country-dog and likes to hang out outsidewith his new canine friends or wherever people are. He takes his walks on the Downtown Mall, and his size and apricotbrindle fur means that kids there often ask his mom if he’s a tiger. When not strolling the Mall, Roman prefers to relax, especially on someone’s lap. He also loves the water, but unfortunatelyhe can’t swim just yet (Susan is planning to teach him this summer!). His other favorite pastimes include playing in thesprinkler, eating fruits and vegetables, and snuggling. Each year, Critter Ball guests bid in a lively auction to crown their pet as the SPCA Mascot.
