Only one lease of life is granted us; and the inquiry with every one should be, "Howcan I invest my powers so that they may yield the greatest profit? How can I do most forthe glory of God and the benefit of my fellow men?" For life is valuable only as it is usedfor the attainment of these ends.(15.1)Our first duty toward God and our fellow beings is that of self-development. Every

faculty with which the Creator has endowed us should be cultivated to the highestdegree of perfection, that we may be able to do the greatest amount of good of which weare capable. Hence that time is spent to good account which is used in theestablishment and preservation of physical and mental health. We cannot afford todwarf or cripple any function of body or mind. As surely as we do this, we must suffer theconsequences.(15.2)Choice of Life or DeathEvery man has the opportunity, to a great extent, of making himself whatever hechooses to be. The blessings of this life, and also of the immortal state, are within hisreach. He may build up a character of solid worth, gaining new strength at every step.He may advance daily in knowledge and wisdom, conscious of new delights as heprogresses, adding virtue to virtue, grace to grace. His faculties will improve by use; themore wisdom he gains, the greater will be his capacity for acquiring. His intelligence, knowledge, and virtue will thus develop into greater strength and more perfectsymmetry.(15.3)On the other hand, he may allow his powers to rust out for want of use, or to beperverted through evil habits, lack of self-control, or moral and religious stamina. Hiscourse then tends downward; he is disobedient to the law of God and16to the laws of health. Appetite conquers him; inclination carries him away. It is easier forhim to allow the powers of evil, which are always active, to drag him backward, than tostruggle against them, and go forward. Dissipation, disease, and death follow. This isthe history of many lives that might have been useful in the cause of God and humanity.(15.4)Seek for Perfection(1905) M.H. 114, 1152. God desires us to reach the standard of perfection made possible for us by the gift ofChrist. He calls upon us to make our choice on the right side, to connect with heavenlyagencies, to adopt principles that will restore in us the divine image. In His written wordand in the great book of nature He has revealed the principles of life. It is our work toobtain a knowledge of these principles, and by obedience to cooperate with Him inrestoring health to the body as well as to the soul.(16.1)Letter 73a, 1896

3. The living organism is God's property. It belongs to Him by creation and byredemption; and by a misuse of any of our powers we rob God of the honor due to Him.(16.2)A Question of ObedienceMS 49, 18974. The obligations we owe to God in presenting to Him clean, pure, healthy bodies arenot comprehended.(16.3)Letter 120, 19015. A failure to care for the living machinery is an insult to the Creator. There are divinelyappointed rules which if observed will keep human beings from disease and prematuredeath.(16.4)R. & H., May 8, 18836. One reason why we do not enjoy more of the blessing of the Lord is, we do not heedthe light which He has been pleased to give us in regard to the laws of life and health.17(16.5)(1900) C.O.L. 347, 3487. God is as truly the author of physical laws as He is author of the moral law. His law iswritten with His own finger upon every nerve, every muscle, every faculty, which hasbeen entrusted to man.(17.1)MS 3, 18978. The Creator of man has arranged the living machinery of our bodies. Every function iswonderfully and wisely made. And God pledged Himself to keep this human machineryin healthful action if the human agent will obey His laws and cooperate with God. Everylaw governing the human machinery is to be considered just as truly divine in origin, incharacter, and in importance as the word of God. Every careless, inattentive action, anyabuse put upon the Lord's wonderful mechanism, by disregarding His specified laws inthe human habitation, is a violation of God's law. We may behold and admire the work ofGod in the natural world, but the human habitation is the most wonderful.[SIN OF TAKING A COURSE WHICH NEEDLESSLY EXPENDS VITALITY ORBECLOUDS THE BRAIN--194]

(17.2)(1890) C.T.B.H. 539. It is as truly a sin to violate the laws of our being as it is to break the tencommandments. To do either is to break God's laws. Those who transgress the law ofGod in their physical organism, will be inclined to violate the law of God spoken fromSinai.[SEE ALSO 63](17.3)Our Saviour warned His disciples that just prior to His second coming a state of thingswould exist very similar to that which preceded the flood. Eating and drinking would becarried to excess, and the world would be given up to pleasure. This state of things doesexist at the present time. The world is largely given up to the indulgence of appetite; andthe disposition to follow worldly customs will bring us into bondage to pervertedhabits,--habits that will make us more and more like the doomed inhabitants of Sodom.I have wondered that the inhabitants of the earth were not18destroyed, like the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. I see reason enough for thepresent state of degeneracy and mortality in the world. Blind passion controls reason, and every high consideration is, with many, sacrificed to lust.(17.4)To keep the body in a healthy condition, in order that all parts of the living machinerymay act harmoniously, should be a study of our life. The children of God cannot glorifyHim with sickly bodies or dwarfed minds. Those who indulge in any species ofintemperance, either in eating or drinking, waste their physical energies and weakenmoral power.(18.1)(1900) 6T 369, 37010. Since the laws of nature are the laws of God, it is plainly our duty to give these lawscareful study. We should study their requirements in regard to our own bodies, andconform to them. Ignorance in these things is sin.[WILLFUL IGNORANCE INCREASES SIN--53](18.2)"Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ?" "What! know ye not that yourbody is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye arenot your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and inyour spirit, which are God's." 1 Cor. 6:15, 19, 20. Our bodies are Christ's purchasedproperty, and we are not at liberty to do with them as we please. Man has done this. He

has treated his body as if its laws had no penalty. Through perverted appetite its organsand powers have become enfeebled, diseased, and crippled. And these results whichSatan has brought about by his own specious temptations, he uses to taunt God with.He presents before God the human body that Christ has purchased as His property; andwhat an unsightly representation of his Maker man is! Because man has sinned againsthis body, and has corrupted his ways, God is dishonored.(18.3)When men and women are truly converted, they will conscientiously regard the laws oflife that God has established in their being, thus seeking to avoid physical, mental, andmoral feebleness. Obedience to these laws must be made a matter of personal duty.We ourselves must suffer the ills of19violated law. We must answer to God for our habits and practices. Therefore, thequestion for us is not, "What will the world say?" but, "How shall I, claiming to be aChristian, treat the habitation God has given me? Shall I work for my highest temporaland spiritual good by keeping my body as a temple for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit,or shall I sacrifice myself to the world's ideas and practices?"(18.4)Penalty for IgnoranceHealth Reformer, October, 1866II. God has formed laws which govern our constitutions, and these laws which He hasplaced in our being are divine, and for every transgression there is affixed a penalty, which must sooner or later be realized. The majority of diseases which the human familyhave been and still are suffering under, they have created by ignorance of their ownorganic laws. They seem indifferent in regard to the matter of health, and workperseveringly to tear themselves to pieces, and when broken down and debilitated inbody and mind, send for the doctor and drug themselves to death.(19.1)Not Always Ignorant(1900) 6T 37212. When persons are spoken to on the subject of health, they often say, "We know agreat deal better than we do." They do not realize that they are accountable for everyray of light in regard to their physical well-being, and that their every habit is open to theinspection of God. Physical life is not to be treated in a haphazard manner. Every organ, every fiber of the being, is to be sacredly guarded from harmful practices.(19.2)

Responsibility for LightGood Health, November, 188013. At the time the light of health reform dawned upon us, and since that time, thequestions have come home every day, "Am I practicing true temperance in all things?""Is my diet such as will bring me in a position where I can accomplish the greatestamount of good?" If we cannot20answer these questions in the affirmative, we stand condemned before God, for He willhold us all responsible for the light which has shone upon our path. The time ofignorance God winked at, but as fast as light shines upon us, He requires us to changeour health-destroying habits, and place ourselves in a right relation to physical laws.(19.3)(1890) C.T.B.H. 15014. Health is a treasure. Of all temporal possessions it is the most precious. Wealth, learning, and honor are dearly purchased at the loss of the vigor of health. None ofthese can secure happiness, if health is lacking. It is a terrible sin to abuse the healththat God has given us; such abuses enfeeble us for life, and make us losers, even if wegain by such means any amount of education.[EXAMPLES OF SUFFERING DUE TO DISREGARDING LIGHT--119, 204](20.1)(1890) C.T.B.H. 15115. God has bountifully provided for the sustenance and happiness of all His creatures;if His laws were never violated, if all acted in harmony with the divine will, health, peace, and happiness, instead of misery and continual evil, would be the result.(20.2)Health Reformer, August, 186616. A careful conformity to the laws God has implanted in our being, will ensure health, and there will not be a breaking down of the constitution.[HEALTH REFORM THE LORD'S MEANS OF LESSENING SUFFERING--788](20.3)An Offering Without Blemish(1890) C.T.B.H. 1517. In the ancient Jewish service it was required that every sacrifice should be withoutblemish. In the text we are told to present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptableunto God, which is our reasonable service. We are God's workmanship. The psalmist, meditating upon the marvelous work of God in the human frame, exclaimed,"I am

fearfully and wonderfully made." There are many who are educated in the sciences andare familiar with the theory of the truth, who do not understand the laws that govern their21own being. God has given us faculties and talents; and it is our duty, as His sons anddaughters, to make the best use of them. If we weaken these powers of mind or body bywrong habits or indulgence of perverted appetite, it will be impossible for us to honorGod as we should.(20.4)[C.T.B.H. 52, 53] (1890) C.H. 12118. God requires the body to be rendered a living sacrifice to Him, not a dead or a dyingsacrifice. The offerings of the ancient Hebrews were to be without blemish, and will it bepleasing to God to accept a human offering that is filled with disease and corruption? Hetells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost; and He requires us to take care ofthis temple, that it may be a fit habitation for His Spirit. The apostle Paul gives us thisadmonition: "Ye are not your own; for ye are bought with a price; therefore, glorify Godin your body and in your spirit, which are God's." All should be very careful to preservethe body in the best condition of health, that they may render to God perfect service, anddo their duty in the family and in society.(21.1)A Pitiful Offering(1872) 3T 164, 16519. Knowledge must be gained in regard to how to eat, and drink, and dress so as topreserve health. Sickness is caused by violating the laws of health; it is the result ofviolating nature's law. Our first duty, one which we owe to God, to ourselves, and to ourfellow men, is to obey the laws of God, which include the laws of health. If we are sick,we impose a weary tax upon our friends, and unfit ourselves for discharging our dutiesto our families and to our neighbors. And when premature death is the result of ourviolation of nature's law, we bring sorrow and suffering to others; we deprive ourneighbors of the help we ought to render them in living; we rob our families of thecomfort and help we might render them, and rob God of the service He claims of us toadvance His glory. Then, are we not, in the worst sense, transgressors of God's law?22(21.2)But God is all-pitiful, gracious, and tender, and when light comes to those who haveinjured their health by sinful indulgences, and they are convinced of sin, and repent andseek pardon, He accepts the poor offering rendered to Him, and receives them. Oh,what tender mercy that He does not refuse the remnant of the abused life of thesuffering, repenting sinner! In His gracious mercy, He saves these souls as by fire. Butwhat an inferior, pitiful sacrifice at best, to offer to a pure and holy God! Noble faculties

have been paralyzed by wrong habits of sinful indulgence. The aspirations areperverted, and the soul and body defaced.(22.1)Why the Light on Health Reform(1870) 2T 399, 40020. The Lord has let His light shine upon us in these last days, that the gloom anddarkness which have been gathering in past generations because of sinful indulgence, might in some degree be dispelled, and that the train of evils which have resultedbecause of intemperate eating and drinking, might be lessened.(22.2)The Lord in wisdom designed to bring His people into a position where they would beseparate from the world in spirit and practice, that their children might not so readily beled into idolatry, and become tainted with the prevailing corruptions of this age. It isGod's design that believing parents and their children should stand forth as livingrepresentatives of Christ, candidates for everlasting life. All who are partakers of thedivine nature will escape the corruption that is in the world through lust. It is impossiblefor those who indulge the appetite to attain to Christian perfection.(22.3)(1890) C.T.B.H. 7521. God has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us in these last days, thatby walking in the light we may escape many of the dangers to which we shall beexposed. Satan is working with great power to lead men to indulge appetite, gratifyinclination, and spend their days in heedless folly. He presents attractions in a life ofselfish enjoyment and of sensual indulgence. Intemperance saps23the energies of both mind and body. He who is thus overcome, has placed himself uponSatan's ground, where he will be tempted and annoyed, and finally controlled atpleasure by the enemy of all righteousness.(22.4)[C.T.B.H. 52] (1890) C.H. 120, 12122. In order to preserve health, temperance in all things is necessary,--temperance inlabor, temperance in eating and drinking. Our heavenly Father sent the light of healthreform to guard against the evils resulting from a debased appetite, that those who lovepurity and holiness may know how to use with discretion the good things He hasprovided for them, and that by exercising temperance in daily life, they may besanctified through the truth.

(23.1)(1890) C.T.B.H. 12023. Let it ever be kept before the mind that the great object of hygienic reform is tosecure the highest possible development of mind and soul and body. All the laws ofnature--which are the laws of God--are designed for our good. Obedience to them willpromote our happiness in this life, and will aid us in a preparation for the life to come.(23.2)Importance of Health Principles(1909) 9T 158-16024. I have been shown that the principles that were given us in the early days of themessage are as important and should be regarded just as conscientiously today as theywere then. There are some who have never followed the light given on the question ofdiet. It is now time to take the light from under the bushel, and let it shine forth in clear, bright rays.(23.3)The principles of healthful living mean a great deal to us individually and as a people. . . .(23.4)All are now being tested and proved. We have been baptized into Christ, and if we willact our part by separating from everything that would drag us down and make us whatwe ought not to be, there will be given us strength to grow up into Christ, who is ourliving head, and we shall see the salvation of God.24(23.5)Only when we are intelligent in regard to the principles of healthful living, can we be fullyaroused to see the evils resulting from improper diet. Those who, after seeing theirmistakes, have courage to change their habits will find that the reformatory processrequires a struggle and much perseverance; but when correct tastes are once formed, they will realize that the use of the food which they formerly regarded as harmless, wasslowly but surely laying the foundation for dyspepsia and other diseases.(24.1)In the Front Ranks of Reformers(1909) 9T 15825. Seventh-day Adventists are handling momentous truths. More than forty years ago

the Lord gave us special light on health reform, but how are we walking in that light? How many have refused to live in harmony with the counsels of God! As a people, weshould make advancement proportionate to the light received. It is our duty tounderstand and respect the principles of health reform. On the subject of temperancewe should be in advance of all other people; and yet there are among us well-instructedmembers of the church, and even ministers of the gospel, who have little respect for thelight that God has given upon this subject. They eat as they please, and work as theyplease.(24.2)Let those who are teachers and leaders in our cause take their stand firmly on Bibleground in regard to health reform and give a straight testimony to those who believe weare living in the last days of this earth's history. A line of distinction must be drawnbetween those who serve God, and those who serve themselves.(24.3)(1867) 1T 48726. Shall those who are "looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of thegreat God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeemus from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works,"be behind the religionists of the day who have no faith in the soon appearing of ourSaviour? The peculiar people whom He is purifying unto Himself,25to be translated to heaven without seeing death, should not be behind others in goodworks. In their efforts to cleanse themselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God, they should be as far ahead of any other class ofpeople on the earth, as their profession is more exalted than that of others.(24.4)Health Reform and Prayer for the Sick(1909) 9T 164, 16527. In order to be purified and to remain pure, Seventh-day Adventists must have theHoly Spirit in their hearts and in their homes. The Lord has given me light that when theIsrael of today humble themselves before Him, and cleanse the soul temple from alldefilement, He will hear their prayers in behalf of the sick, and will bless in the use of Hisremedies for disease. When in faith the human agent does all he can to combat disease, using the simple methods of treatment that God has provided, his efforts will be blessedof God.(25.1)If, after so much light has been given, God's people will cherish wrong habits, indulging

self and refusing to reform, they will suffer the sure consequences of transgression. Ifthey are determined to gratify perverted appetite at any cost, God will not miraculouslysave them from the consequences of their indulgence. They "shall lie down in sorrow."Isa. 50:11.(25.2)Those who choose to be presumptuous, saying, "The Lord has healed me, and I neednot restrict my diet; I can eat and drink as I please," will erelong need, in body and soul, the restoring power of God. Because the Lord has graciously healed you, you must notthink you can link yourselves up with the self-indulgent practices of the world. Do asChrist commanded after His work of healing,--"go, and sin no more." John 8:11.Appetite must not be your god.(25.3)(1867) 1T 560, 56128. The health reform is a branch of the special work of God for the benefit of Hispeople. . . .(25.4)I saw that the reason why God did not hear the prayers of His servants for the sickamong us more fully was, that26He could not be glorified in so doing while they were violating the laws of health. And Ialso saw that He designed the health reform and Health Institute to prepare the way forthe prayer of faith to be fully answered. Faith and good works should go hand in hand inrelieving the afflicted among us, and in fitting them to glorify God here, and to be savedat the coming of Christ.(25.5)(1864) Sp. Gifts IV, 144, 14529. Many have expected that God would keep them from sickness merely because theyhave asked Him to do so. But God did not regard their prayers, because their faith wasnot made perfect by works. God will not work a miracle to keep those from sickness whohave no care for themselves, but are continually violating the laws of health, and makeno efforts to prevent disease. When we do all we can on our part to have health, thenmay we expect that the blessed results will follow, and we can ask God in faith to blessour efforts for the preservation of health. He will then answer our prayer, if His name canbe glorified thereby. But let all understand that they have a work to do. God will not workin a miraculous manner to preserve the health of persons who are taking a sure courseto make themselves sick, by their careless inattention to the laws of health.(26.1)

Those who will gratify their appetite, and then suffer because of their intemperance, andtake drugs to relieve them, may be assured that God will not interpose to save healthand life which is so recklessly periled. The cause has produced the effect. Many, astheir last resort, follow the directions in the word of God, and request the prayers of theelders of the church for their restoration to health. God does not see fit to answerprayers offered in behalf of such, for He knows that if they should be restored to health, they would again sacrifice it upon the altar of unhealthy appetite.[SEE ALSO 713](26.2)A Lesson From Israel's Failure(1909) 9T 16530. The Lord gave His word to ancient Israel, that if they would cleave strictly to Him,and do all His requirements,27He would keep them from all the diseases such as He had brought upon the Egyptians;but this promise was given on the condition of obedience. Had the Israelites obeyed theinstruction they received, and profited by their advantages, they would have been theworld's object lesson of health and prosperity. The Israelites failed of fulfilling God'spurpose, and thus failed of receiving the blessings that might have been theirs. But inJoseph and Daniel, in Mos

such as "counsels on health," appeared first in works now out of print. the reference to the current work is given, but the information as to the first publication of the article is note
