St. Padre Pio- September 23In one of the largest such ceremonies in history, PopeJohn Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina onJune 16, 2002. It was the 45th canonizationceremony in Pope John Paul’s pontificate. More than300,000 people braved blistering heat as they filledSt. Peter’s Square and nearby streets. They heardthe Holy Father praise the new saint for his prayerand charity. “This is the most concrete synthesis ofPadre Pio’s teaching,” said the pope. He alsostressed Padre Pio’s witness to the power ofsuffering. If accepted with love, the Holy Fatherstressed, such suffering can lead to “a privileged pathof sanctity.”Many people have turned to the Italian CapuchinFranciscan to intercede with God on their behalf;among them was the future Pope John Paul II. In1962, when he was still an archbishop in Poland, hewrote to Padre Pio and asked him to pray for a Polishwoman with throat cancer. Within two weeks, she hadbeen cured of her life-threatening disease. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins andtook the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 andwas drafted during World War I. After he wasdiscovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917, he was assigned to the friary in SanGiovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari onthe Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making histhanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision ofJesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata.Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received thestigmata, but busloads of people soon began comingto see him. Each morning after a 5 a.m. Mass in acrowded church, he heard confessions until noon. Hetook a mid-morning break to bless the sick and allwho came to see him. Every afternoon he also heardconfessions. In time his confessional ministry wouldtake 10 hours a day; penitents had to take a numberso that the situation could be handled. Many of themhave said that Padre Pio knew details of their livesthat they had never mentioned.Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering. Athis urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby MountGargano. This “House for the Alleviation of Suffering”has 350 beds.A number of people have reported cures they believewere received through the intercession of Padre Pio.He died on September 23, 1968.(Excerpts from) Franciscan MediaBackground on the Gospel ReadingBy Loyola Press Sunday ConnectionMark 9:30-37In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus again predict hispassion, death, and Resurrection to his disciples. The setting here is important. Jesus and hisdisciples are preparing to journey through Galilee, aJewish territory in which Jesus has alreadyencountered problems with the Pharisees. Perhapsthis is why Mark indicates that Jesus was trying tojourney in secret. In predicting his passion, Jesus isacknowledging the danger they will face and istrying to prepare his disciples for it. Yet Mark tellsus that the disciples did not understand what Jesuswas saying and were afraid to ask what he meant.Such hesitation on the part of the disciples is notcharacteristic behavior. Peter had no fear aboutrebuking Jesus in last week’s Gospel. Perhaps thisis an indication that the disciples were aware that anew situation was emerging.Mark paints a vivid picture in today’s Gospel.Having arrived at Capernaum, Jesus and hisdisciples enter a house. In this private place, Jesusasks his disciples about the argument they hadwhile they were journeying. Again, the disciples areuncharacteristically silent and afraid to answer. They have been found out. Jesus then summons theTwelve, whom Mark identified earlier in his Gospelas those chosen by Jesus to preach and to drive outdemons. To this select group of disciples, Jesusteaches that those who would be first in God’skingdom must be servants of all.Jesus then calls forward a child and teaches theTwelve that to receive a child in Jesus’ name is toreceive both Jesus and the One who sent him. Wemight easily fail to understand the significance ofthis action. In first-century Palestine, children werewithout status or power, possessing no legal rights. In this action, Jesus is teaching his disciples and usthat when we serve the least ones among us, weserve Jesus himself. Who are the people withoutpower or status in our society that Jesus is calling usto serve? Do we do so willingly? Jesus teaches thatGod’s judgment of us will be based on this criterionalone.

“For A Synodal Church”:Continued FormationWhat is an Apostolic Exhortation? It is customary that, following each Synod, adocument called an Apostolic Exhortation isissued by the Pope. The Holy Father draws onthe information that has been provided tohim to write a document for the bettermentof the Church in the world. One example ofan Apostolic Exhortation that has long beenan influential teaching document is Evangeliinuntiani, published by Pope St. Paul VI in1974 after the completion of the Synod ofBishops that focused on “Evangelization inthe Modern World. Another highly influentialApostolic Exhortation is Familiaris consortio, published following the Fifth OrdinaryGeneral Assembly of Bishops in 1980 underthe theme, The Christian Family.”**********************************Bishop Robert Barron’sThe CreedThe Creed, a new film series blendingboth documentary footage and dynamictalks, Bishop Barron guides viewers intothe depths of the Nicene Creed. The Episodes:1.
