Good Book Company thinking onChristian resourcesThe Western world has been 'resourcerich' for years. There is a large choiceof bible-study booklets and evangelistic tools available to people andchurches, and no end of training opportunities to sign up for. Althoughthe quality varies, we are still rich inthese things in a way that our brothersand sisters in the wider world are not.Even worse, many parts of Africa,Asia, and Latin America are floodedwith poor-quality cast offs from western publishers, inappropriately high- PPP resources at a training day in Papua New Guinealevel books, or by resources filled withruinous false teaching. They are crying out for basic, reliable material that teachesthe Bible carefully, accurately and consistently. That's part of the idea behind our Pray, Prepare, Preach series of simple preachingguides. These low-cost guides will help pastors and Bible teachers around theworld teach the word of God more clearly week by week to their congregations. We seek to fund all these ministries out of our other publishing and training activities. So you can be confident that what you pay for a book or a study guide is notonly an investment in your own spiritual health, but also contributes towardsbringing the life-giving message of Christ to many others.Feel free to use this electronic version in any way you want, but please also thinkabout how you might be able to get a physical copy into the hands of someone whomight not have access to electronic media, and for whom this book would transform their preaching and through them, an entire congregation! We make copies ofthis book available in bulk at extremely low prices. It tells us the main point ofhis book. Notice that John and Jesuspreach the same message. When wehave read about Jesus Christ, we tooshould ‘repent and believe the goodnews’. Main pointJesus Christ has come as Godpromised. This is good news. Weshould come to Jesus and repent. When we repent we turn round. Wechange our mind. We do not gosin’s way any longer. We go God’sway. Use a word picture to help.? Notes Mark 1:2, 3. Mark uses the wordsof Isaiah 40:3. He shows that Johnis the ‘messenger’ (prophet) thatIsaiah told people about. Isaiahuses a picture. A person is makinga good road, ready for the King toride on. John is like this person. Mark 1:6. John is dressed like theprophet Elijah (2 Kings 1:8).@ Something to work on1. Pray that God will help youshow people how importantand wonderful Jesus is. Mark’sgood news is Jesus, so we mustpreach Jesus!2. Make sure that they understand‘repent’ (‘turn away from yoursins’). Mark 1:4, 15. ‘Repent’means more than ‘say sorry’. Mark 1:7. John is talking aboutJesus. Crowds of people listen toJohn, but he does not feelimportant. Jesus is much moreimportant than he is. Mark 1:8. John can only makepeople wet. Jesus will wash peoplefrom their sin. Jesus will changepeople by his Holy Spirit. Thisverse talks about what happenswhen Jesus makes us a Christian.Read 1 Corinthians 12:13.16When you see this symbol, youneed to read what the Bible says.STUDY PAGE:Understand the BibleThe first page helps you to understandthe Bible section. BACKGROUND: It is veryimportant to think about what comesbefore and after the section. We willlook at a few verses each time. However, those verses fit into Mark’sbig story about Jesus. Always ask howa section is like other things in Mark.Ask how it helps us to understand whoJesus is and why Jesus came.most important point in a few words.Think about this point. Can you seethis is what the Bible section isteaching? Try to make sure that thispoint is very clear in your talk.@ SOMETHING TO WORK ON: Thispart chooses something from the Biblesection which you need to thinkabout. It is important to work hard tounderstand the Bible. Think carefullyabout how to teach the point in thissection. We may use a word picture tohelp you.? NOTES: This section tells you aboutdifficult Bible verses. It will help younot to make mistakes when you areteaching. The Background section will help youto do this. MAIN POINT: We have put the9

Preaching Mark combined text:Preaching Mark Combined textPREACH PAGE:Teach the BibleThe second page helps you to teachthe Bible section. You must also doyour own work. This page gives youideas. You must take the ideas and usethem in the best way. We give you thebones, but you must put the meat onthe bones!P PREACH: Mark 1:1-8THE GOOD NEWSMark 1:1-31. JESUS CHRIST ISTHE GOOD NEWSIn Mark 1:1 ‘gospel’ means ‘goodnews’. The good news is a person!Usually good news is whensomething happens. But the bestnews is when this person comes.God had promised this person forhundreds of years. Isaiah the prophetspoke about him (Mark 2:2, 3). Jesus is the Christ (Mark 1:1).‘Christ’ is not just another namethat Jesus has. It is his job. Jesus’job is to be the ‘Christ’ or king thatGod sent. Think how excited youwould be if the most powerful rulerin the world came to see you! Jesusis far more important, because he isthe king of heaven. Jesus is God’s Son (Mark 1:1).When we truly believe that Jesus isGod’s Son, we will bow andworship him. We will believeeverything he says. We will give ourlives to him. Jesus came to wash us cleaninside. (Mark 1:8). Jesus did notcome to punish us for our sin! Jesuscame to forgive us! This is why John‘baptised’ people (dipped people inwater). He baptised people to showthat Jesus was coming to wash themfrom their sin.2. TELL THE GOOD NEWS!When you have good news, you donot keep quiet. You tell peopleabout it! [Think of an example.] Godgave John a job to do. He must tellpeople the good news about Jesus.16:38Page 10 We show you what the Bible says.We want people to listen to the Bible.Keep reminding them of what theBible says. If they have a Bible, askthem to find the verse you are talkingabout. This symbolwill helpyou know when to do this. We explain what the Bible isteaching. You need to think how toexplain the Bible so that your peopleunderstand. You know your people. Wedo not know your people. Your wordsare better than our words. We sometimes use a word picture. Here is an exampIe from the noteson Mark 1:16-20.Mark 1:2-4, 7, 8.g We have the best news to tell!Think of people who have notheard the good news about Jesus. How will you tell them?X Imagine this. You see someone who isbusy at work. He has a good job. Hehas a house and a family to look after. You tell him to leave his work andfollow you. You will not pay himmoney. What will he tell you to do? Hewill tell you to go away! But whenJesus says ‘Follow me’, what happens?WHAT WE SHOULD DO!Mark 1:4Many people think that Jesus doesnot matter. They may believe Jesushas come, but it does not changethem. Why is it wrong to think like this?John told people to ‘repent’(change the way they think)because King Jesus was coming. They must hate their sins and askJesus to forgive them.g Heaven’s king has come! Will you do nothing? Will you leave Jesus out of yourlife? Or will you repent and believe inJesus?171. THINGS WE HAVE WRITTEN TOHELP YOU Two or three headings. THESE AREWRITTEN LIKE THIS. These headingswill help you to teach the Bible clearly. You can change the headings to makethem better for your people.1015/1/09The word picture may not be good foryour people. In your village, peoplemay not have jobs which bringmoney. A Bible teacher must find abetter word picture to help the peopleunderstand. You will need to findmany more word pictures to helpteach the Bible truth. Be very carefulthat the word picture teaches what theBible is saying. We show you how to connect theBible teaching to your people. It is important to hear God’s word

Preaching Mark combined text:Preaching Mark Combined textspeaking to us. We need to knowhow the Bible teaching changes us.Here is an example:g We have the best news to tell!Think of people who have not heardthe good news about Jesus. How willyou tell them? We give you one or two ideas. Youneed to think of more ways toconnect the Bible to your people. You know the people. You know howthe Bible needs to change their lives.15/1/0916:33Page 112. OTHER THINGS YOU WILL NEEDTO DO Think how to start your talk. Yourpeople need to see why it isimportant to listen today. Tell themwhat you will teach them from theBible. Tell them why it is importantfor them. Think how to end your talk.Remind them of the main points.Give them something to think about,or something to do. Pray! You are telling the peopleGod’s truth from God’s word. Praythat God will use your words tospeak to the people. Pray that God’struth will change people. Always use your own language.Never say things in English, if thepeople do not speak English well.If you need further help, we have shown how to prepare atalk from this book. Turn to the end, and you will see anexample of how to use this book to Preach Mark!11

Preaching Mark combined text:Preaching Mark Combined text15/1/0916:33Page 13C. About the Gospel of Mark1. WHO WROTE IT?Mark wrote it. Mark was not one ofthe 12 disciples. He is probably‘John Mark’, who we read about inActs 12:12, 25 and other places.Probably, Peter told Mark all thethings that happened. Then Markwrote them down in his Gospel.2. WHEN DID MARK WRITE IT?Most likely between A.D. 40 andA.D. 65. So, Mark is the earliestGospel. Matthew and Luke use partsof Mark’s Gospel. This is why somesections in Matthew and Luke arethe same as Mark.Remembering this will help us tounderstand the stories about Jesus.Mark does not tell these stories justso that we know what happened.Mark has a better reason. He tells usthe stories about Jesus to help usunderstand who Jesus is and whyhe came. He wants us to repent andbelieve (Mark 1:15).Remember this big message whenyou preach Mark’s Gospel. Thestories all fit together. They have amessage. Mark’s Gospel is the bigmessage about Jesus, not lots ofdifferent stories. So, when we preach on one story,we ask ourselves questions like this –3. WHY DID MARK WRITE IT? Why does Mark put this story in?How does it fit?Mark tells us why he wrote it, inMark 1:1. ‘The beginning of the gospelabout Jesus Christ, the Son of God.’ What does it tell us about who Jesusis, or why Jesus came? How does it help us to trust in Jesus? He tells us the good news (‘gospel’)of Jesus Christ. Mark’s Gospel is notjust the life story of Jesus. It is aboutthe good news of:4. WHAT IS MARK’S PLAN? who Jesus is why Jesus came why Jesus died. WHO JESUS IS; Mark 1-8Mark divides his Gospel into twohalves. WHY JESUS CAME; Mark 9-16This is Mark’s big message.13

Preaching Mark combined text:Preaching Mark Combined text15/1/09WHO JESUS ISWHY JESUS CAMEMark chapters 1-8Mark chapters 9-16Mark 1-8 is about who Jesus is.Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,Mark 1:1; 2:7; 4:41; 8:29.16:33Page 14Mark 9-16 is about why Jesuscame. Jesus came to suffer and diefor sins, Mark 10:45.Try to remember this plan. It willhelp you to understand Mark. You can see the two halves inMark 8:29, 31.In Mark 1-8, Jesus has shown the disciples many times who he is. But theyhave not understood. At last, in Mark 8:29 Peter sees who Jesus is! Jesusimmediately starts to teach his disciples why he came (Mark 8:31). But thedisciples do not understand that Jesus must die. So, as Jesus goes towardsJerusalem and the cross, he teaches the disciples that he came to die (Mark9-16).14

Mark wantsus to see who Jesus is(Mark 1:1, 11). He wants us to turnaway from our sins and believe thegood news (Mark 1:15).XWord picture example: imaginethat you are very ill. You hear thatthe hospital has a cure. This isvery good news! So do you stay athome and die? No, you go to thehospital! The good news aboutJesus is for today. Main point? NotesJesus is God’s Son. God says so. Jesushas come to tell the good news. Sowe should believe it and turn awayfrom our sins (‘repent’). Mark 1:9. ‘The Jordan’ is thename of the river in which Johnbaptised people. Background@ Something to work onHave you told the good newsabout Jesus many times? Perhaps itis not new to your people. Perhapsthey think that they can wait untilthey are older. Think how to showthem why Jesus’ message is soimportant. Think of a word pictureto help them. Show them why theymust turn away from their sins, andbelieve in Jesus today.18 Mark 1:10. What is the dove? Adove is a white bird. God wasshowing how pleased he was withJesus. He gave the people a pictureof His Spirit coming down onJesus. His Spirit looked like a dove. Mark 1:13. After Satan hadtempted Jesus, God sent angels tolook after him (Matthew 4:11). Mark 1:15. ‘The time has come’.God had promised Israel a Messiah(Saviour) in the Old Testament. They have waited for many years. But now this time has come. Jesuswill be the King of God’s kingdom.Jesus will rule over God’s people.

Preaching Mark combined text:Preaching Mark Combined text15/1/0916:33Page 19P PREACH: Mark 1:9-15GOD SPEAKS!Israel chose not to trust God. ButJesus did not fail the test.Mark 1:9-11It was time for Jesus to begin hiswork. His work was to bring thegood news. What is the first thing that Jesusdid (Mark 1:9)? Jesus was‘baptised’ (put under water) to bean example to us. Everyone whofollows Jesus should be baptised. What did God think of Jesus asJesus began his work (Mark 1:10,11)? Do you remember that Johntold people how special Jesus was?(Mark 1:4-8) Now God speaks fromheaven! John was right about Jesus. Now God says that Jesus is his Son.We must believe him.SATAN TEMPTS!g Satan tempts us to follow aneasier way. Remember Jesus. Hesaid no to Satan. He trusted God.We can ask Jesus to help us to sayno to Satan.JESUS PREACHES!Mark 1:14, 15Jesus has passed the test. Jesuscomes out of the desert to preachthe good news. John cannot preachthe good news any longer. (Whynot? Mark 1:14). So now, Jesus tellspeople the same message as Johndid. What is that message?Mark 1:15.Mark 1:12, 13God was pleased, but Satan (thedevil) was angry. God wanted Jesusto bring the good news. Satanwanted to stop Jesus. Satan temptedJesus to follow an easier way.(‘Tempt’ means to attract someoneto do wrong.) But Jesus did notlisten to him. This is like God’s people Israel inthe desert (in Exodus andNumbers). Israel failed the test. The good news is that people donot have to wait any longer. Theking has come. The person who canforgive their sins has come. It istime to do something.g We do not have to wait to haveour sins forgiven! Jesus has come!Praise God for Jesus. Turn awayfrom your sins (‘repent’) now, andfollow him. We call them his disciples. Main pointJesus, God’s Son, has power to tell uswhat to do.20We do not like anyone to tell uswhat to do. We want to choose howwe live.
