Fr. Pius Noel Pareja, MMHCTHE MYSTERY OF THE TRINITYSolemnity of the Most Holy TrinityMay 30, 2021When Jesus taught about the Eucharist, Hegave a long discourse on the Bread of Life andcelebrated it in the Passover setting. When Hespoke about the Holy Spirit, He gave another long discourseabout the Spirit and the role He will be playing in the life of theChurch. But when Jesus spoke about the Father, the Son andSpirit, He simply spoke about it focusing on their relationships.During the early life of the Church it was not even discussed butsimply accepted as the truth. But as the Church spread to otherculture, particularly the Greek culture, there was a need to explain the mystery without contradicting our monotheistic belief, our belief that there is only one God. How do we acknowledgethe reality of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as distinct personyet believe in one God? After so many centuries until now westill have a hard time explaining the mystery of the Trinity. It is difficult to explain the mystery of Trinity but it does notmean that we do not have a way of understanding that reality. Wecan only use simile and analogy. Once we use a word or a language, we must also be aware of their limitation. We are usingsomething that is limited by the context and use of that word in agiven language. Sometimes we need to use so many words toexplain one reality. Just like translating from one language to theother. We often find one word in our language that we usuallyuse but it has no exact translation in another language that we areusing. We end up explaining the idea in many words to make iteasier for that person to understand what we are saying. We needto use some words that are familiar to the one listening to us.Jesus revealed the reality of the Trinity in the context of relationship. He spoke of His love for His Father, of how much He knows theFather and vice-versa, of His obedience to the will of the Father,of the appreciation of the Father for the things that He was doingfor the Father, of His gratitude for the love and concern of theWhen I was a little child, one of our catechists explained the Father for Him, of His willingness to follow the will of the FatherTrinity by using the mango as an example. She said: “This is a even if it was difficult and it would require that He give up Hismango. It has three parts the skin, the flesh and the seed. The life, and of His oneness with the Father.mango has three distinct parts but it still remains one mango.” Itis a very simple analogy. And to a child, it was easy to grasp. But Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit as His abiding presence in theas one grows older, the question on the Trinity becomes compli- Church and in the world. He mentioned that the Holy Spirit willcated. There was a smallhole on the seashore dug by a little boy. And thelittle boy has on his hand a seashell. Along the sandybeach, St. Augustine was walking while he was pondering with difficulty the mystery of the Most HolyTrinity. “Father, Son, Holy Spirit; three in one!” hemuttered, shaking his head.As he approached the little boy who was runningback and forth between the sea and the small holewith a seashell filled with water, Augustine becamecurious and asked the little boy: “Son, what are youdoing?”“Can’t you see?” said the boy. “I’m emptying the seaand putting all its water into this pool!”“Son, you cannot do that!” Augustine countered.“I will sooner empty the sea into this pool than youwill manage to get the mystery of the Most HolyTrinity into your head!” replied the little boy.Upon saying that, the boy, who according to thelegend was an angel, quickly disappeared. He leftAugustine alone with the mystery of the Most HolyTrinity.Love becomes profound in the context of a growing relationshipthat is deepened by:A. By being able to know each other more. It is broughtabout by a communication that is constant, open andsincere, by acceptance of the total reality of the personbeing loved in the many diverse experiences that theywill have, by the deeper understanding of each other thatis brought about by their shared experience, and by theirappreciation and thankfulness for the gift of person thatis fully given and shared with one another.B. By generosity of giving to one another. This generosityof love is seen in the way Jesus was willing to give upHis life in obedience to the Father. It was a love that iswilling to sacrifice for another. It was also the same generosity of the Father that He was willing to give us Hisonly Son that we may be saved. Jesus sent the HolySpirit that He may continue to sustain us by grace in ourjourney of faith. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, may we give thanks to God whocontinued to love us in the Father who provides for our needs, inthe Son who continues to save us through the Paschal Mysterythat we celebrate in the Sacraments, and in the Holy Spirit thatcontinues to sanctify us, guides us and strengthen us in our journey.
