ForewordMuch is being written today on this subject of demons.Few have dealt extensively with the practical aspects ofdeliverance from demon spirits. It is from this practicalviewpoint that this book is presented. It is intendedprimarily as a guide to deliverance. The Church is fast awakening to the need for thisministry. It represents one facet of the restorationwork of the Holy Spirit within the church today .This book is also a trumpet call to total spiritualwarfare. The Church and the individual believer must getbeyond the concept of personal deliverances to theconcept of spiritual warfare against the spiritualpotentates who are called “the spiritual hosts ofwickedness in heavenly places”. (Ephesians 6:12)Here, then, are some answers on how to go aboutdeliverance and spiritual warfare.I acknowledge with deep gratitude the influence thatDr. Derek Prince has had upon my ministry. Many ofthe principles of deliverance reflected in my writing areproducts of his sound foundational teachings. I wish toexpress my thanks to Dr. Prince for permission to quotehis “Deliverance Prayer”.Appreciation is also expressed to Phillip K. Brown and

Mrs. Margaret E. Rhudy for proofreading themanuscript.Names and initials of all persons mentioned asdeliverance examples have been changed in order toprevent any possible embarrassment. All quotationsfrom Scripture are from the Authorized Version unlessotherwise noted.Frank D. Hammond

Chapter 1Pigs in the ParlorDemon spirits can invade and indwell human bodies. Itis their objective to do so. By indwelling a person theyobtain a greater advantage in controlling that personthan when they are working from the outside. Whendemons indwell a person, he or she is said to “have”evil spirits, to be “with” evil spirits, or to be “possessed”with demons. (See Mark 9:17; Luke 4:33; Mark 1:23; 5:2;Matt. 4:24). The word translated “possessed” by theKing James version is the Greek word “daimonizomai”.Many Greek authorities say this is not an accuratetranslation. It should be translated “demonized” or“have demons”. Much misunderstanding has resultedfrom the use of the word “possessed”. This wordsuggests total ownership. In this sense, a Christiancould never be “demon possessed”. He could not beowned by demons because he is owned by Christ.“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemedwith corruptible things, as silver and gold . but withthe precious blood of Christ.” I Pet. 1:18,19“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of theHoly Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, andye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price:therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit,WHICH ARE GOD’S.” I Cor. 6:19,20

The Christian should always consider indwellingdemons as unnecessary and undesirable TRESPASSERS.A trespasser is one who unlawfully and stealthilyencroaches upon the territory of another. Trespasserscan continue their unlawful practices until they areconfronted and challenged on the basis of one’s legalrights. Jesus has purchased the believer with His ownblood and has made him a steward over his own life. The devil has no legal right to him; however, it is up tohim to defend his rights. No demon can remain whenthe Christian seriously desires him to go! “Resist thedevil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7b).Demons consider the body of the person indwelt to betheir “house”:When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, hewalketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findethnone. Then he saith, I will return into MY HOUSE fromwhence I came out. Matt. 12:43,44aIt is not uncommon for demons to speak through aperson who is being delivered (See: Mark 1:23, 24). Ihave often heard evil spirits declare, “This is my house”They are referring to the person’s body, and are seekingto deceive the person and the deliverance minister intothinking that they have a right to that body. No demoncan back up such a claim. All demons are liars anddeceivers. Demons have no title to bodies redeemed bythe blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

When demons are being commanded out of a personthey will sometimes contend “I have been here a longtime” as though tenure of occupancy gives them title toa person’s body. The Christian must be assured that nodemon has a legal right to indwell his body.Twenty-five times in the New Testament demons arecalled “unclean spirits”. The word “unclean” is thesame word used to designate certain creatures whichthe Israelites were not to eat (See Acts 10:11-14). The pigwas one of these “unclean” creatures. According to OldTestament law they were not to be eaten or eventouched. The New Testament lifts this prohibition byshowing that these creatures were spiritual types.[God] disarmed the principalities and powers rangedagainst us and made a bold display and public exampleof them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [thecross]. Therefore let no one sit in judgment on you inmatters of FOOD AND DRINK, or with regard to a feastday or a new moon or a Sabbath. Such [things] are onlyTHE SHADOW of things that are to come, and they haveonly a SYMBOLIC value. But the reality-the substance, the solid fact of: what is foreshadowed, the body of itbelongs to Christ. Col. 2:15 17 (Amplified)As a spiritual type the pig is to the natural realm whatthe demon spirit is to the spiritual realm. Just as theIsraelite zealously protected himself from contact withpigs, the Christian is to guard himself from contact withevil spirits.

What would you do if a herd of filthy pigs came intoyour parlor and began to make themselves at home?Would you invite such a thing? Would you pay noattention to them in the hope they would soon leave oftheir own accord? Would you try to clean up their messas fast as they made it? You would do none of thesethings. You would drive them out as quickly andunceremoniously as possible! And this is to be ourattitude toward demon spirits. As soon as they arediscovered they are to be driven out.All four Gospels record the event of Jesus cleansing thetemple. This is an unusual picture of our Lord. He wasfilled with righteous indignation at what he found inthe temple. It was no time for mere words; it was a timefor action. He began personally and determinedly; topurge the temple of every defiling thing. This is anillustration of the cleansing of our bodies, which aretemples of the Holy Spirit, from all that is unclean.Demon spirits provide nothing good. They only defile. They have no more place in us than the cattle, birds andmoney changers had in the earthly temple. We can actin the same authority with which Jesus cleansed thetemple and rid ourselves of defiling evil spirits. Jesusdid not make pretty speeches or debate with those whodefiled the temple - he drove them out!As unreasonable as it may seem, some Christians arenot as ready to get rid of indwelling demons as onemight assume. Some are embarrassed to admit theneed for deliverance. The embarrassment should neverresult from having them but in failure to act promptly

in getting them out. Others have walked in agreementwith certain spirits for so long that they do not want tochange. Not all Christians really want to live in purity.Such are as those who have made friends with pigs. Buteven the prodigal son came to himself while among theswine and decided that he would separate himself andreturn to his father. Let us pray that all of God’schildren who cohabit with spiritual swine will see thatthere is a better life.A research scientist in bio chemistry told me of anexperiment in which he was engaged. It was hisobjective to isolate and identify the factors which areresponsible for hog pen odors. By determining thereason why hogs smell as they do it would to then bepossible to find an antidote. Thus, hogs could be mademore compatible with human society. It is not ourobjective to make demon spirits compatible. We arenot looking for ways to make demons easier to live withbut how to get rid of them. We want no pigs in ourparlor!

CHAPTER 2OUR SPIRITUAL ENEMIESDemons are spiritual enemies and it is theresponsibility of each Christian to deal with themdirectly in spiritual warfare. Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in thepower of his might. Put on the whole armour of God,that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of thedevil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, butagainst principalities, against powers, against the rulersof the darkness of this world, against spiritualwickedness in high places. Eph. 6:10-12For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after theflesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down ofstrongholds). II Cor. 10:3,4The scripture employs the analogy of wrestling inreference to our warfare with Satan and his hosts.Wrestling is an accurate and pointed description. Itspeaks of close-quarter fighting; of personally grapplingwith the powers of darkness. Most of us would prefer touse a giant cannon and blast away at these enemiesfrom miles away, but this is not possible. The battle isvery personal and close. The enemy is a spiritual one.The weapons are spiritual.

Wrestling also suggests pressure tactics. This tells usthat Satan’s tactic is to put pressure on us. He does thisin the areas of our thought life, emotions, decisionmaking and our physical bodies. Believers often feelpressured by the enemy in one way or another. Whenone is ignorant of Satan’s devices he may turn for reliefto tranquilizers, sleeping pills or even the psychiatrist’scouch. But God’s remedy for victory over demonicpressures is spiritual warfare. The Bible shows us howthe Christian can put pressure upon the demons anddefeat them! He must then learn the practical ways inwhich this is done. He must throw away his ineffectivefleshly weapons and take up mighty spiritual weapons. The believer must know both his own weaponry andhow to employ it, and the tactics of the enemy and howto defeat him.Ephesians chapter six, verse twelve tells us fourimportant things about our spiritual enemy. First, weare told that we are fighting against PRINCIPALITIES.The Greek word for principalities is “archai” This wordis used to describe things in a series, such as leaders, rulers and magistrates. Thus, a “series” of leaders orrulers would describe their rank and organization. Sothe word "principalities” tells us that the Satanickingdom is highly organized. Perhaps Satan’s forces aremuch the same in organization as the army of theUnited States which his the President as Commander-inChief followed by generals, colonels, majors, captains, lieutenants on down to the private. Satan is the head ofhis kingdom and has under him a rank of ruling spiritsultimate subject unto himself. The English word

"principality” is defined as “the territory or jurisdictionof a prince or the country that gives title to a prince”(Webster). Thus, we see that these ruling spirits areassigned over areas such as nations and cities. This isborne out by the account in Daniel, chapter ten. Danielwas seeking a word from God through prayer andfasting. After three weeks an angel appeared. The angelexplained that he had been delayed in getting to Danielwith God’s message by an encounter with "the prince ofthe kingdom of Persia”. He does not refer to an earthlyprince, for no mere man could withstand a heavenlymessenger. He is speaking of a demon prince. From thisit is clear that there are ruling demon spirits placed bySatan over nations and cities in order to carry out hisevil purposes. Problems that persist and plaguechurches and homes can well indicate that special evilagents have been assigned to cause trouble in theseareas as well. Thus, we discover that our spiritualwarfare embraces much more than our individuallives. We are fighting for the welfare of our homes, communities and nation. The enemy is thoroughlyorganized. His moves are made with evil designsSecond,’ we are told that our warfare is againstPOWERS. The Greek word translated “powers” is“exousias”. This word is accurately translated as“authorities”. This word tells us that the demons whoare placed over various areas or territories are givenauthority to carry out whatever orders have beenassigned. The Christian soldier need not be dismayed ordiscouraged to learn that those whom he faces havebeen given authority, for the believer has even greater

authority. He is vested with the authority of the nameof Jesus. And these signs shall follow them that believe: IN MYNAME shall they cast out devils. Mark 16:17This verse tells us that the believer has greaterauthority than the authority of demons. Demons areforced to yield to the authority of the name of Jesus. The scripture reveals that demons not only haveauthority but they have power. In Luke chapter ten, verse nineteen we read of the “power” of the enemy. The word for “power” in the Greek is “dunamis”. OurEnglish words dynamo and dynamite come from thisword. Yet this fact will not daunt the Christian warrior, for he has the promise of God’s Word that he can havegreater power than that of the enemy.“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost iscome upon you.” Acts 1:8The power of the believer comes to him with thebaptism in the Holy Spirit. Jesus knows that hisfollowers need both authority and power to deal withthe enemy. When he sent the twelve out in ministry hesent them fully equipped.“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gavethem POWER (dunamis) and authority (exousiai) overall devils, and to cure diseases.” Luke 9:1

A little later in His ministry Jesus sent the seventydisciples out two by two, and when they returned theyreported that they successfully dealt with the demonpowers in the mighty name of Jesus: And the seventyreturned again with joy, saying, Lord even the devilsare subject unto us through thy name. And he said untothem, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.Behold, I give unto you power (exousiai) to tread onserpents and scorpions, and over all the power(dunamis) of the enemy; and nothing shall by anymeans hurt you. Luke 10:17-19The commission that Jesus has given to His churchprovides the same authority and power. In Markchapter sixteen and verse seventeen we are told thatbelievers are to cast out devils in the name of Jesus. Thepromise was not limited to the apostles or first centurydisciples, but is for all believers of all times. The commission as stated in Matthew chapter twentyeight, verses eighteen through twenty, opens with thedeclaration, “all power (authority' is given unto me inheaven and in earth. Go ye therefore.”We today have the same authority and power forministry that was given to the church initially. It wouldbe sheer folly to go against demons spirits without thispower and authority. The authority comes throughsalvation; the power comes through the baptism in theHoly Spirit. The power given the believer through themighty baptism in the Holy Spirit is evidenced throughthe operation of the gifts of the Spirit (See I Cor. 12: -11).

The gifts of the Spirit, such as supernatural words ofknowledge and discerning of spirits, are indispensablein spiritual warfare. This power and the authority ofJesus’ name are given that the believer might overcomedemon powers. The policeman is an example of authority and power. He gets up in the morning and before he goes to duty heputs on his uniform and his badge. Everyonerecognizes his “authority” when they see his uniformand badge. But there are some lawless persons who willnot respect this authority. So, the policeman straps hisbilly-club on one hip and his revolver on the other. Nowhe has the “power” to back up his authority! In likemanner, the Christian is foolish to go out against demonforces without both his authority and power. We are not to wait for God to come to our rescue. It isnot a time to pray that God will provide power andauthority. He has already provided for our salvationand our baptism in the Holy Spirit. He is thereforewaiting for us to recognize that He has already madethe necessary provisions, and that we are to engage inspiritual warfare and become the militant churchprophesied:And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and uponthis rock I will build my church; and the gates of hellshall not prevail against it. Matt. 16:18Third, we learn that we wrestle against THE RULERS OFTHE DARKNESS OF THIS WORLD. The word in Greek

for “world rulers” is “kosmokratoras”. The word can betranslated 'lords of the world” or “princes of this age”.This designation of the enemy emphasizes his intentionto control. Satan is referred to in scripture as “the godof this world” (II Cor. 4:4).When Adam fell through sin, Satan gained dominionover the world. Jesus did not deny the devil’s claimmade during the wilderness temptations:“Again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding highmountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of theworld, and the glory of them; And said unto him, Allthese things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down andworship me.” Matt. 4:9It is imperative that we recognize Satan to be a defeatedfoe. He is stripped of his power and his kingdom. Wehave every right to treat him as a trespasser.Suppose you own a piece of wooded property. You putup signs around that property saying “No Trespassing”.This signifies that you own the property and have alegal right to keep others off it. A hunter comes by. Hedisregards your notices posted around the property andtrespasses. When you find him there you can make himleave. He has no right to stay. It is important that weunderstand that demon spirits have no legal rights tothe Christian. They may trespass, but when we areready to take the initiative and give them notice theymust leave.

Jesus explained His ability to cast out demons in thesewords:“But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubtthe kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strongman armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace. But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, andovercome him, he taketh from him ALL HIS ARMOURwherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.” Luke11:20-22Jesus declared that the strong man’s armour was takenaway from him. This means that Satan is madecompletely defenseless. The expression “all his armour”is the Greek word “panolia” This word panoplia is usedone other time in the New Testament. In Ephesians6:11 the Christian is exhorted to take unto himself theWHOLE AMOUR of God. Thus, the Christian is notvulnerable at any point while the devil is vulnerable atevery point!Satan is still seeking to rule the work I, and we mustagree that he has made considerable progress. Why?Because the church has not risen up in the power andauthority given it. However, a large segment of the bodyof Christ today is coming into a knowledge of theenemy, and of its own spiritual weaponry and strengthand is taking the offensive against Satan and his hosts. The more Christians who enter into the warfare, themore Satan will suffer loss.Fourth, scripture says that we wrestle against

SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS IN HIGH PLACES. The key tothis phrase is the word “wickedness”. The wordsuggests that which is highly injurious or destructive incharacter. These evil powers have only one objective-wickedness. They may appear as angels of light and bytheir deceptiveness draw7 many into their nets ofdestruction. Jesus exposed their wicked purposes inthese words:The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and todestroy. John 10:10aThese four expressions from Ephesians 6:12 have givenus a very vivid picture of Satan’s kingdom. It is highlyorganized to carry out its purposes. Demon powers areset in array and given authority by Satan to control theentire world and plague it with pernicious evil. There isno advantage to us in ignoring Satan’s forces andmethods. This only permits Satan to work undetectedand unchallenged. To fail to become actively involvedin spiritual warfare is to suggest that we do not carewhat becomes of ourselves, our loved ones, ourcommunity, our nation and our world. Most Christianshave not become engaged in spiritual battle becausethey have never been taught the importance of it northe way to go about it. Today Satan is flaunting hispower through spiritism, occultism, false religions andcults as never before in all human history. The church is being forced to re-examine its ownresources.

Billy Graham has been quoted by a national newspaperas saying, “All of us engaged in Christian work areconstantly aware of the fact that we have to do battlewith supernatural forces and powers. It is perfectlyobvious to all of us in spiritual work that people can bepossessed by demons, harassed by them and controlledby them. More and more ministers will have to learn touse the power of God to release people from theseterrible possessions by the devil.”God is raising up a mighty army today that is goingforth with spiritual weapons. The results areimpressive! Through the ministry of deliverancethousands of God’s people are being set free from thetorments of demon spirits.

Chapter 3Fight the Good FightIt is an awakening revelation to the church today todiscover how organized Satan is and howsystematically he is working against us. While most ofus have been taught that it is every believer’s task to bea witness of Jesus Christ, and even trained andencouraged to witness; at the same time we have notbeen schooled that it is also every believer’s task to be aChristian soldier, active in spiritual warfare. How manyChristians have been trained in “the PULLING DOWN ofstrongholds” (II Cor. 10:4), or in how to “RESIST thedevil” (James 4:7), or how to “WRESTLE againstprincipalities. powers. rulers of the darkness of thisworld. and spiritual wickedness in high places” (Eph.6:12)?As Christian soldiers we must acquire practicalknowledge. When I was in military training duringWorld War II, I was taught the weapons and the tacticsof the enemy. I was also taught the weapons and tacticswhich I would employ against the enemy. God’s army isin boot camp today. We are learning how to beChristian soldiers and “war a good warfare” (I Tim.1:18) .In Ephesians 6:10 we are exhorted to put on the wholearmour of God and stand against the “wiles of thedevil”. The word translated “wiles” is “methodeia”meaning “to follow up by method and settled plan,

using deceit, craft and trickery” (Thayer). Satan has amethod and a settled plan to conquer each one of us,along with our family, church, community and nation.God has provided armour for our protection andweapons for offensive warfare. Thus, we can withstandevery assault against us AND launch an attack that willoverthrow the enemy! The emphasis in this book is upon personaldeliverance. This is the starting point for total spiritualwarfare. When we engage the enemy on the level ofpersonal deliverance we are lighting Satan’s front linetroops. His “top brass” is beyond, and we must gel tothem before the battle is over. The first objective inwarfare is to free oneself.Does everyone need deliverance? Personally, I have notfound any exceptions. While we have walked inignorance and darkness the enemy has successfullymade inroads into each of us. We must learn how to gethim out and how to keep him out.Talk out loud to the demons! This may seem foolish andawkward until you have gotten accustomed to it, but itis an effective and necessary tactic of spiritual warfare. It is obvious that one must speak out when expellingdemons. We must also speak to demons assaulting fromwithout. For example, suppose a demon has just spokento your mind: “So-and-so thinks you are stupid.”Demons talk to our minds like that. It is the way theyplant seeds of resentment and suspicion. You can soonlearn to distinguish between what is of self, of God or of

Satan. You might say something like this to the demon:‘You are a liar, demon. I reject that thought about myfriend. My mind is under the protection of the blood ofJesus. I bind you from my thoughts. I command you toleave me alone, in the name of Jesus.”The preceding is an example of resisting the devil. Weknow the Bible tells us to “resist the devil”, but we maynot have discovered the practical way of implementingthe principle. In whatever words you use, vocalize yourposition in Jesus Christ and resist the demons by theuse of the name and blood of Jesus. They aretrespassers and must “flee” when resisted in this way.Do not stop at telling them once. Demons can bestubborn, so keep resisting until your mind is at peace.Study carefully the seven ways to determine the needfor deliverance (See Chapter 6). Be honest withyourself. Ask God to help you see where and howdemons have invaded. This does not mean to mull overpast sins and unpleasant things in the past. It is simplyrecognizing that demon have taken advantage of sinsand circumstances in life, in order that those intruderscan be driven out and the doors closed behind them.Seek out help of deliverance ministry in the area whereyou live. Such help is much more prevalent than it wasjust a few years ago, and God is raising up many othersto teach and minister in deliverance. If there is no helpavailable, pray that God will provide it. Meet with otherconcerned believers in the body of Christ. Perhaps theLord will direct you to learn to minister to one another.

Ultimately deliverance must be restored to the church. It is as much a ministry of the church as preaching, teaching and healing. Jesus performed all theseministries and commissioned the church to continuethem.Begin to practice self-deliverance. Pick out an area inyour life where you know demons are troubling you,and command them to come out in Jesus’ name. Whenthe demons see that you are absolutely renouncingthem and are speaking in faith, they will respond. Donot let them go unchallenged another day! “TheKingdom of God is. righteousness, peace and joy in theHoly Ghost” (Rom. 14:17). This is God’s inheritance foryou NOW! It is yours for the taking! The Battle for HomeIn many homes today, even though husband, wife andchildren may profess Christ, there is strife, division, confusion and chaos. It is time the devil took his shareof the blame. And it is time families learn how to drivethe devil out of their homes. The ideal starting point for victory is for each memberof the family to commit himself anew to Jesus Christ. This should be followed by deliverance for each one.A beautiful thing took place in a church where ourteam was invited to minister. The pastor had taughtwell the principle of the man’s place of headship in thehome. One by one the men came forward to make

appointments for deliverance for themselves and theirfamilies. The ministry was important enough to themthat they made arrangements to get off from their jobsand would take their children out of school in older tomeet their appointments. This is the way it should be.Families are encouraged to experience deliverancetogether. When the whole family is cooperating, andconsidering one another, the devil is defeated in ahurry. But some homes have greater obstacles. Not allmembers of the family are believers. Some may be toobackslidden to have any interest in spiritual things. Ifonly one in a family is burdened for the welfare of thehome, what can be done?Mrs. J’s problems were typical of many others whom Ihad counseled. She was trying her best to live forChrist, but her husband resisted her at every turn. Herailed at her if she went to church. He drank heavilyand gambled. She reported that he was abusive andviolent, and she was afraid for herself and the children. Her three young children were already showing theeffects of the turmoil in the home. They were fearful, insecure, withdrawn and nervous. Mrs. J had prayedmuch for her husband, but he became worse instead ofbetter. She was planning to divorce him.Mrs. J consented to deliverance for herself. We knew itwould be difficult for her to retain her full deliveranceas long as her environment was so unsettled, but thatshe would get definite relief from fears and pressures.

It was then decided that we would enter into spiritualwarfare against the demons that were controlling thelife of her husband, and blinding him to spiritual truth. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: Inwhom the god of this world hath blinded the minds ofthem which believe not, lest the light of the gloriousgospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shineunto them. II Cor. 4: 3,4WARFARE IS NOT PRAYER! It is in addition to prayer. There is no point in petitioning God for something Hehas already given you. God has given us power andauthority over the devil. We must not expect God to getthe devil off our backs. He has already defeated Satanand given us the ability and responsibility to take careof ourselves. This truth is a revelation to manybelievers-it is good news! No wonder so many prayershave seemed unanswered. We need to stop stormingheaven for what has already been provided, and startusing what God has given us.We began the spiritual warfare in behalf of Mrs. J’shusband. She would learn how to conduct a spiritualbattle from the experience, and be able to continue iton her own. “You demons that are troubling Mr. J, wetake authority over you in the mighty name of J
