Helen Keller – Early LifeHelen Keller was born on the 27th June, 1880,in a small town called Tuscumbia, Alabama. Shewas born to Kate Adams Keller and ColonelArthur Keller who lived on an estate called IvyGreen.Her father was an editor of the local paper, TheNorth Alabamian. Everything wasgoing well until Helen becameextremely ill when she wasaround 19 months old.This illness caused Helen tolose her sight and her hearing.As she was unable tocommunicate to anyone, shenever learnt basic rules orlessons, and became knownas a ‘wild child.’ A Moment In Our World

Helen Keller – ChildhoodDue to her deafness and blindness, it was hard forHelen to learn. In 1886, her mother, Kate, heardabout the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston.She wrote to this school to ask for a teacher forHelen. Anne Sullivan, arrived on the 3rd March,1887.Anne Sullivan was born on 14th April, 1866 inMassachusetts. Her family was poor andcould not take care of her, so at 10years old, Anne was sent to live ina home for the poor. At 14, shewas sent to the Perkins School forthe Blind to receive training tobecome a teacher to blind children.Helen’s teacher also had very poorvision and it was her job to figureout a way for Helen to understandwords and their meaning. Helen Keller – ChildhoodAnne began signing letters onto Helen’s palm.After, one month of doing this, it clicked. Helenlearnt 30 words in one day.Helen quickly learnt words and sentences and wassoon able to communicate by signing the manualalphabet. The manual alphabet is signing eachindividual letter to create a word.Helen went on to learn to write inBraille. Braille is a system of raiseddots that can be read with thefingers by people who have low orno vision. It is a code that may bewritten and read.Braille was invented by LouisBraille and is system of symbols thatare formed within units of spaceknown as the braille cell. Anne had to read everything and sign it intoHelen’s hand. Helen was also learning how tospeak.In 1896, Helen went to theCambridge School for Young Ladiesand was admitted to RadcliffeCollege in 1899.Helen loved to learn. She studiedFrench, German and Latin. Thisbook has been translate into 50languages.This autobiography detailed herearly life, especially her experienceswith Anne Sullivan. She dedicatedthis book to Alexander GrahamBell.In 1904, she was the firstdeaf-blind person to receive acollege degree, graduatingfrom Radcliffe Collegewith very high honors. A Moment In Our World

Helen Keller – AdulthoodHelen and her friends were also quite interested inpolitics. She joined the suffragist movement in1909. Suffragists wanted equal treatment forwomen, including the right to vote. This right wasgranted in 1920.Helen also became a socialist asshe believed that society shouldbe based on people’s needs, noton the amount of power or moneythey had.In 1914, Polly Thomson beganworking with Helen and Anne andthey became known as the‘Three Musketeers.’They travelled to Hollywood in1918 to make a silent movieabout Helen’s life, Deliverance. Anne becametoo tired from all of this and in 1922they stopped their tour.Helen was a pacifist, protestingagainst the First World War,being one of the early members ofthe American Civil LibertiesUnion. Helen Keller – AdulthoodIn 1924, Helen joined the American Foundation forthe Blind, becoming an ambassador for this companyfor the next 44 years. She travelled around theUnited States developing support programs thathelped blind people.In conjunction with M.C. Migel and Robert B.Irwin, they persuaded the US government to holdan international conference of workersfor the blind. Representatives from32 countries attended a specialmeeting in the White House,Washington, DC. They were greetedby President Herbert Hoover andHelen.In 1929, as part of the AFBCampaign, she convinced a majorradio manufacturer to donate250 radios to blind or visuallyimpaired people. Helen Keller – AdulthoodHelen was an excellent typist and a gifted writing.She wrote many books, as well as lots of essays,articles and speeches during her lifetime.In May 1933, Helen’s writings came to the attentionof the world when one of her books, Out of theDark, was burned by a young Nazis in Germany whohated socialism. In response to this burning, shewrote an impassioned letter.In 1936, Anne Sullivan, Helen’steacher died. Polly Thomsonbecame Helen’s primary companion.During the Second World War,Helen and Polly travelled all overthe US, supporting the blind andwounded veterans. Herdetermination and accomplishmentshelped change laws and createprograms for the visuallyimpaired. A Moment In Our World

In 1955, she receivedan Academy Award for a documentary, HelenKeller in Her story.Helen was a courageous womanwho loved life. She believed thateveryone deserved the same rights.Helen suffered a stroke in 1960.After Polly’s death in 1961, Helenlived quietly at Arcan Ridge untilshe died in her sleep in on 1 June,1968.
