from the editorMemories and MissionsAs Director of Communications at theInstitute for Creation Research, I reported directly to Dr. Henry M. Morris III for nine years. He was my boss, but he was also my friend. I have fond recollections of stopping by Dr. Henry’s office totalk through projects and of his responses aswe worked through the details. If there wereany problems, I usually had the confidencethat I could take them to him and be heard. He honored me and others in that way—helistened. He had a distinctive way of endingconversations, too. He’d smile and wavehis hand as if to brush you out of the roomand say, “Okay, now off with you” or “Go toit.” He didn’t mean it in a truly dismissiveway—he just meant, okay, we’ve ironed thatout, now we can go on to the next thing. Geton with it. (He often ended staff devotionsthat same way.) I miss him. And I’m not theonly one who feels his absence since he wentto be with his Lord on December 12. In ourtribute to him in this issue, we’ve includedcomments from friends of ICR (“Remembering the Life and Legacy of Dr. Henry M.Morris III,” pages 10-11). One of our readers said, “What a loss for us all.” So true—what a loss for us all.And yet, as Dr. Henry often said, wecontinue to “go to it,” to press on with ICR’smission. ICR President Dr. Randy Guliuzzareminds us of our ministry’s primary aimin his article “The Mission of the Institutefor Creation Research” (pages 5-7). He says,“The mission of ICR is to consistently exaltthe Lord Jesus through everything that wecommunicate. Our message through articles, books, or videos must highlight the4ICR.ORG ACTS&FA C T S50(2) workmanship of Christ—especially as expressed in living creatures— which is unfailingly glorious. All of us at ICR feel privilegedto use science to rightfully credit Christ asour Creator and Savior and thus demonstrate why Jesus is worthy to be the centerof our deepest love, affection, and devotion.”ICR zoologist Frank Sherwin honorsChrist as he points out the Creator’s ingenuity in the design of cuttlefish and concludeswith the observation that “the Master Engineer is to be praised for such sophisticationin His living world” (“Created Cuttlebone’sSweet Spot,” page 15). The park series we’refeaturing in Acts & Facts this year demonstrates our Creator’s majesty and creativity. We hope you enjoy reading “ArchesNational Park: Sculptures from the Flood”(pages 16-19). And the ICR Communications team has created activities especiallyfor your children so they can grow in theirFEBRUARY 2021understanding of Jesus as our Creator. Weencourage you to talk through the faithbuilding facts with them in “Creation Kids:Jupiter” (page 23).When we honor Christ as Creator inthe midst of a world that exalts evolution, wecontinue the legacy of Dr. Henry M. Morris III and those who came before him whoencouraged Christian believers to upholdthe accuracy and authority of Scripture. Wehave sweet memories of God’s faithfulnessthroughout the 50 years of ICR’s ministryexistence, and we have assurance of Hisgrace and help as we “go to it.” As we moveforward with ICR’s mission, we offer ourworship and love to our Creator, the LordJesus Christ, and we invite you to join us aswe press on.Jayme DurantExecutive Editor

The Mission of theInstitute for Creation ResearchR A N D YEvery morning when I drove onto themilitary base where I worked I was metwith a sober message. For many yearsit read “Remember the Mission!” andlater it said “Our mission is ” The purposeof these “mission” placards was to clarify forservice members a single priority so thateveryone would refine their performancewithin their unique duty section to best contribute to overall mission accomplishment. For instance, I was an Air Force medical officer. Most people intuitively knowwhat the mission of a hospital is. We certainly sought to render the best medical carepossible for our patients’ benefit. But ourhospital’s primary mission was to feed intothe Bomb Wing’s war-fighting mission byJ .G U L I U Z Z A ,P . E . ,article highlights We often need to be reminded ofour purpose and mission. ICR’s mission is fivefold—credit Jesus Christ as Creator, come alongside pastors, change how peopleunderstand biology, spread anddefend the gospel, and win scientists and science back to Christ.ensuring that Wing personnel were medically ready at any time to enter the fight, orthat they were treated and returned to thefight as soon as possible. It’s good to be reminded of our priorities and purpose. While a student at Moody Bible Institute, I was taught that the mission of theM . D .church could be organized into three basicfunctions: worship, edification (buildingup) of believers, and evangelism. If a churchundertook an activity that couldn’t reasonably be plugged into one of these functions, then that activity was a distraction fromtheir mission. The same goes for the Institute forCreation Research (ICR) as a ministry thatexists to support the church. It might be aworthwhile exercise for the ICR staff, ourreaders, and our supporters to remind ourselves what ICR is about and how we willapply our efforts. ICR’s following five jobssupport the church’s mission through worship, edification, and evangelism.FEBRUARY 2021 ACTS&FA C T S50(2) ICR.ORG5

feature1. Specifically Credit Jesus Christ asCreatorMany churches and ministries have apithy statement for their purpose along thelines of “to know Christ and to make Himknown.” ICR has the same purpose. Thispurpose, however, presupposes that Christis understood as the true Creator God. Thistruth that the Lord Jesus is the Creator isaffirmed in many passages such as “In thebeginning was the Word, and the Wordwas with God, and the Word was God .All things were made through Him, andwithout Him nothing was made that wasmade” (John 1:1, 3). Unfortunately, sciencehas long been abused by evolutionary selectionism to deny that the universe, life, andthe very image of God that humans possesswere supernaturally created. In accordancewith Romans 1:25, ICR must also exposeand oppose all false worship of the creationitself instead of Jesus Christ the Creator. Thus, as a science-based ministry ICRexists to demonstrate that worship shouldbe the normal response to science by usingscience as it’s supposed to be used. That is,to render honor and glory in the most basicway that Christians can—by regularly accentuating the rightful credit due to Jesus asour Creator. I devoted my December 2020Acts & Facts article to discussing at lengththis ICR mission in which I mentionedthat Christians are hungry—perhaps evenstarved—for the glory of Christ.1Thus, the mission of ICR is to consistently exalt the Lord Jesus through everything that we communicate. Our messagethrough articles, books, or videos musthighlight the workmanship of Christ—especially as expressed in living creatures—which is unfailingly glorious. All of us at ICRfeel privileged to use science to rightfullycredit Christ as our Creator and Savior andthus demonstrate why Jesus is worthy to bethe center of our deepest love, affection, anddevotion.2. Come Alongside PastorsICR’s central ministry is to andthrough local churches. Thus, a primary6ICR.ORG ACTS&FA C T S50(2) duty of ICR is to help pastors lead, feed, anddefend their flock. How? ICR scientists give them the bestand freshest biblical and scientific answersto their questions and responses to secularattacks. Our research efforts are targeted toward areas that affirm the Bible’s historicalnarratives, principally those of recent creation and a worldwide flood, but that alsoconfirm the Bible’s accuracy in general. Weprovide all Christians with answers to thechallenges coming from a huge crowd ofsecular scientists and skeptics who menacethe church here and now. Thus, a primary duty ofICR is to help pastorslead, feed, and defendtheir flock.3. Fundamentally Change How People Understand BiologyICR’s most pressing assignment is tofundamentally change the way people understand biology. Our task is to construct acompletely new theory of biological designthat incorporates recent discoveries andrespects the biblical narrative. The theorywould explain hundreds of fascinating examples of creatures’ abilities from an organism-centered, engineering-based perspective that gives glory to their Creator—andnot to “nature.” The theory would: be the framework guiding the interpretation of biological phenomena; assume that biological functions are bestexplained by engineering science principles; restore a holistic view to explain the operation of creatures’ functions; reject the simplistic, parts-oriented approach of the status quo; and be a clear, concise, and easily communicable design-based theory and not anesoteric mathematical construct.FEBRUARY 2021Dr. Tim Clarey works on his DiscoveryCenter Omniglobe animation storyboardsAn engineering-based, organismfocused framework shows why we shouldabandon Darwin’s worldview of selectionism that sees organisms as modeling clay being passively shaped over time by the vicissitudes of their venerated view of nature.2 Andthat same design-based approach to biologyshows us why we should begin to view creatures as active, purposeful, problem-solvingentities.We hope this theory will become thefundamental, design-based principle uniting biological explanations in Christiantextbooks and museums educating futuregenerations of young believers. We praythat an engineering-based approach to biology will spark a second creationist revival and once again stir up a sense of certainty inChristian truth.

Convincing someone to thinkcorrectly about creation isn’t theultimate goal, but helping peopleto believe in Jesus as their Lordand Savior is.Dr. Jeff Tomkins (above) and Drs. Brian Thomas and Tim Clarey (below) give presentationsin the ICR Discovery Center for Science & Earth History4. Spread and Defend the GospelWe at ICR recognize three importantfacts as the gospel relates to the Bible’s doctrine of creation. First, convincing someoneto think correctly about creation isn’t theultimate goal, but helping people to believein Jesus as their Lord and Savior is. Second, people may believe in Christ for salvationbut still be misled about biblical clarity andauthority by simultaneously believing inevolution, an ancient creation, or both. I wasone of those people for several years.Third, the widespread, government-sanctioned teaching of evolutionary selectionism is a major reason people don’t believe the Bible is God’s Word and thus don’ttake the claims of Christ as Savior seriously.ICR often includes the gospel message directly in the avenues of our communication. We also affirm biblical clarity3 and defendspecific biblical narratives that are commonly under secular attack. These actionsfulfill Peter’s admonition to “sanctify theLord God in your hearts, and always beready to give a defense to everyone who asksyou a reason for the hope that is in you, withmeekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).We show the ways in which scienceconfirms that natural processes cannot explain the Bible’s miraculous accounts ofrecent creation, the worldwide Flood, andChrist’s resurrection. Our research activities serve to defend the gospel. Paul was imprisoned for the defense of the gospel andwrote to the believers in Philippi: “Just as itis right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch asboth in my chains and in the defense andconfirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace .knowing that Iam appointed for the defense of the gospel”(Philippians 1:7, 17).5. Win Scientists and Science Backto ChristWithout a doubt, ICR continues toward the goal of ICR founder Dr. HenryMorris, which was that “we must try notonly to win individual scientists and educators to Christ, but also to win science itself, and education itself, to Christ.”4 We willbuild on the solid foundation laid by thosewho came before us—not only Dr. HenryMorris, but our recently departed CEO Dr.Henry Morris III, current President Emeritus Dr. John Morris, Dr. Duane Gish, and somany others.5References1. Biblical clarity teaches that God clearly communicates whatHe wants to say to people at any time and in any culturewhen an accurate translation of the Bible’s words gives theirnormal meaning in their normal context like any otherpiece of literature. Practically, this means that the averageperson who doesn’t have either an advanced degree inscience or in theology can understand the Bible’s teachingsat face value without necessarily being informed by theological, historical, or scientific experts and source material.4. researchJ A K EH E B E R T ,Ph. D .For the serious science readerDeveloping a MoreRigorous Ice Sheet ModelIn the creation model, a single Ice Agelasting hundreds of years was caused byand quickly followed the Genesis Flood.1In 1994, ICR atmospheric scientist Dr.Larry Vardiman published a mathematical model for the rapid formation of thickpost-Flood ice sheets.2 In a previous researchcolumn, I described my work extending hisresearch.3 Here I present an update.Because of the heat generated by rapidseafloor spreading during the Flood, theoceans would’ve been much warmer afterthe Flood than they are today. This wouldhave caused more evaporation from thesea surface, resulting in significantly heaviersnowfall at high latitudes and on mountaintops.1 Dr. Vardiman’s model has much morerapid ice deposition during the Ice Age, withthese deposition rates rapidly but graduallydecreasing to their present-day values.2For the simple case of an ice sheet thatundergoes no melting, the rate at which theheight of the ice sheet grows with time willbe the rate at which ice is being deposited(the precipitation rate in meters of ice peryear) minus the speed at which the top ofthe ice sheet moves downward (also in meters per year). This downward movement isdue to the weight-induced thinning of theunderlying ice layers. Both of these rates can change overtime. If the two rates are equal in size, theheight of the ice sheet will remain constant. But if the precipitation rate is greater thanthis downward speed, the ice sheet willgrow in thickness. Dr. Vardiman assumedthat the speed at which the upper ice surface moves downward was always equal toa small constant multiplied by the height ofthe ice sheet. His method was reasonablebut an oversimplification, as he himself acknowledged.1,3Obtaining a better estimate of the icesheet’s growth over time requires findingthis downward speed. That in turn requiresa sophisticated computer model that simulates the behavior of the entire ice sheet. Byusing Dr. Vardiman’s original precipitationmodel and the computer model to obtain abetter estimate of this downward speed, wecan then find the rate at which the ice sheetheight grows with time. The main goal of this research is toshow that it can be accomplished and tolay the groundwork for future creation research. Given the uncertainties about pasttemperatures and precipitation rates, itseems likely this effort will only yield semiquantitative (“order of magnitude”) results.Regardless, it’s hoped the results will showthat heavy but realistic Ice Age precipitationrates can form thick ice sheets in just a fewhundred years. The Flood Ice Age model predictsarticle highlights Evidence strongly suggests theGenesis Flood created the conditions needed for the Ice Age. Atmospheric scientist Dr. LarryVardiman developed a modelfor the growth of post-Flood icesheets. ICR physicist Dr. Jake Hebert isbuilding on this model to moreaccurately determine ice sheetgrowth rates during the Ice Age.thicker annual layers than uniformitarianmodels do. Hopefully, this research will giveus a feel for how much thicker these annuallayers actually were. Once we obtain theheight of the ice sheet as a function of time,a simple IDL computer code can determinethe thicknesses of the annual layers. I havealready used this code to estimate annuallayer thicknesses in Dr. Vardiman’s originalmodel. A paper describing this method hasbeen submitted to the Creation Research Society Quarterly and is in the process of beingreviewed.3We at ICR thank both God and youfor your faithful financial contributions—even during these stressful times—thatmake this research possible.References1. Remembering the Lifeand Legacy ofDr. Henry M. Morris IIIThe Institute for Creation Research’sCEO, Dr. Henry M. Morris III, wentto be with his Lord on December 12,2020. After years of faithful service, Dr.Morris, known warmly around the office asDr. Henry, was planning to retire from hisleadership position that same month. Inpreparation for his retirement, we includeda tribute article about him in the December 2020 issue of Acts & Facts and createda video of some of the ICR staff and Boardof Trustees members sharing stories and expressions of appreciation.1Since Dr. Henry’s homegoing, we havecontinued to reflect on his life and legacy, and three powerful attributes stand out: hislove for God, his dedication to upholdingthe accuracy and authority of the Scriptures, and his tireless efforts to encourageChristian believers to stand firm in a culture of compromise.Whether he was writing articles, devotionals, and books, teaching his Genesisclass at church, speaking at creation conferences, leading ICR staff, or planning exhibits for the ICR Discovery Center for Science& Earth History, his message remained thesame: Love God. Believe the Bible. StandFirm. We praise the Lord for his faithfulwitness and investment in the work of theKingdom!Although the full impact of his legacyI read many of his Days of Praise devotionals in the mornings and always read Acts& Facts cover to cover! What would thechurch be like if not for the Morrises andmen like them? They worked hard andfinished well. Well done!.My family and Iare eternally grateful for the work of HenryMorris III. — J. He, likehis father before him, loved the Word andhad a deep love for creationism. I was led tothe Lord via creationism. This just breaksmy heart, but I also know that he is no longer in pain and is walking and talking withour Lord Jesus, the Christ. Condolencesand comfort go out to his family and all hisloved ones. And also to those who lovedhim like I did. I am going to really misshim. — C. S.kI’m just one of thousands who have nevermet Dr. Morris but have been profoundlyministered to by his work. I thank God forhis life and know that he is rejoicing withhis Lord and Savior now. Praying for hisfamily. — K. H. W.

kkkThis makes me so sad. He was my [professor at Christian Heritage College] whenI was a student ’75-79. He taught us howto study God’s precious Word using theStrong’s Concordance.
